Association between Neuropsychiatric Improvement and Neurocognitive Change in Alzheimer's Disease: Analysis of the CATIE-AD Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between improvements in neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and neurocognitive change in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) during treatment using the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness-Alzheimer Disease (CATIE-AD) dataset. METHODS: AD outpatients with NPS who needed pharmacological treatment (n = 421) were followed up with antipsychotics, citalopram, or placebo for up to 36 weeks (mean±SD = 252±52 days). The study aim was to investigate associations between improvement in each NPS evaluating scale (by Clinical Global Impre

Measurement, Education and Tracking in Integrated Care (METRIC): use of a culturally adapted education tool versus standard education to increase engagement in depression treatment among Hispanic patients: study protocol for a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Significant mental health disparities exist for Hispanic populations, especially with regard to depression treatment. Stigma and poor communication between patients and their providers result in low use of antidepressant medications and early treatment withdrawal. Cultural factors which influence treatment decisions among Hispanics include fears about the addictive and harmful properties of antidepressants, worries about taking too many pills, and the stigma attached to taking medications. Primary care settings often are the gateway to identifying undiagnosed or untreated mental he

Comparisons between psychosis samples with different patterns of substance use recruited for clinical and epidemiological studies.

Despite high rates of comorbid substance use disorders and smoking among people with psychotic disorders, previous studies have not examined differences in socio-demographic, clinical or disability characteristics between psychosis sub-groups with different patterns of substance use. This study compared the characteristics of five groups of people with psychosis and varying patterns of substance use (n=1152), including groups entering treatment studies for substance use or smoking, epidemiological samples of substance users and smokers, and people without such problems. Data were drawn from se

Peripheral blood miR-15b-5p and ABCC6 are candidate biomarkers of early antipsychotic treatment response in first-episode schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are the mainstay of schizophrenia treatment, but early response varies markedly across patients. We aimed to identify peripheral miRNA-mRNA signatures associated with subsequent early SGA response and to explore the discriminative and incremental predictive value of selected baseline biomarkers. METHODS: First-episode, drug-naïve schizophrenia patients (n = 65) receiving SGA monotherapy were classified as responders or non-responders after 4 weeks using a ≥ 25% reduction in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale scores. Peripheral blood miRNA and mR…

BACKGROUND: With a decrease in heroin's purity and availability in the European drug market, Hungarian opioid dependent patients started to substitute heroin with novel psychoactive substances (NPS) and especially with synthetic cathinones. GOAL: This study aims to assess whether clients of opioid substitution treatment (OST) with and without a history of synthetic cathinone use during therapy differ in (1) the rate and type of experienced childhood trauma, (2) the way they cope with negative life events, (3) their motivation to change substance use behavior, (4) the rate of treatment retenti

Neurobiological substrates of electroconvulsive therapy for Tourette syndrome: a Serial SISCOM study.

We report the case of an adult male patient with Tourette syndrome, self-injurious behavior and depression, refractory to conventional treatment, and whose symptoms remitted after electroconvulsive therapy. Serial Technetium 99m-Ethyl-Cysteinate-Dimer single photon emission tomographies were applied, before, during, and after electroconvulsive therapy. The neural substrates of this treatment process were further analyzed by woxel-wise subtracted single photon emission tomography images.

Symptom-based pharmacotherapy for neuropathic pain related to spinal disorders: results from a patient-based assessment.

Existing guidelines advocate an updated therapeutic algorithm for chronic neuropathic pain (NeP), but pharmacotherapeutic management should be individualized to pain phenotypes to achieve higher efficacy. This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of medications, based on NeP phenotypes, and to propose symptom-based pharmacotherapy. This retrospective study was enrolled 265 outpatients with chronic NeP related to spinal disorders. The patients were classified into three groups: spinal cord-related pain, radicular pain, and cauda equina syndrome. Data were obtained from patient-based questio

Associations among subjective cognitive complaints, perceived social support, and medication adherence in patients with psychotic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Medication adherence is essential for the management of psychotic disorders, yet it remains difficult for many patients to sustain over time. In this study, the focus is on subjective cognitive complaints, defined as patients' self-perceived everyday cognitive difficulties, rather than cognitive biases or objectively measured cognitive deficits. These complaints may be associated with difficulties in remembering medication schedules, organizing treatment routines, and maintaining consistent follow-up. Perceived social support may also be relevant, as supportive family members, frie
