Thiel's embalming method with additional intra-cerebral ventricular formalin injection (TEIF) for cadaver training of head and brain surgery.

Thiel's embalming method provides natural coloration, flexibility, and tissue plasticity, and is used widely to prepare specimens for cadaver surgical training. However, this method causes brain softening, thereby restricting the cadaver surgical training of intra-cranial procedures. In this study, three cadavers were embalmed using formalin fixation, Thiel's embalming method, and Thiel's embalming method with additional intra-cerebral ventricular formalin injection, respectively. We also established rat models of the three embalming methods to develop and determine the best method for retaini…

Transfer of Sciatic Nerve Motor Branches in High Femoral Nerve Injury: A Cadaver Feasibility Study and Clinical Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Femoral nerve injury causes knee dysfunction, and high femoral nerve injury is difficult to repair. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the anatomic feasibility of transferring the sciatic nerve motor branches in high femoral nerve injury. METHODS: The femoral nerve was exposed in both lower extremities of 3 adult fresh-frozen cadavers; each branch was noninvasively dissected to its proximal nerve fiber intersection point and distal muscle entry point. The branches of the sciatic nerve were also exposed. The length, diameter, and number of myelinated fibers were measured in each femoral and s…

Implementation and Evaluation of Training for Ultrasound-Guided Vascular Access to Small Vessels Using a Low-Cost Cadaver Model.

OBJECTIVES: Critically ill neonatal and pediatric patients often require central vascular access. Real-time ultrasound guidance for central venous catheterization is beneficial. Because the diameter of central veins is much smaller in neonates than in adults, extensive training is needed to master the visualization and catheterization of central veins in neonates. This study assessed the learning effect of a standardized simulation-based teaching program on ultrasound-guided cannulation in a low-cost cadaver tissue model. DESIGN: This simulation-based prospective study assessed physician comp…

Weight-Bearing Cone-Beam CT Scan Assessment of Stability of Supination External Rotation Ankle Fractures in a Cadaver Model.

BACKGROUND: The utility of computed tomography (CT) for measuring medial clear space (MCS) for determination of the stability of supination external rotation (SER) ankle fractures and in comparison to standard radiographs is unknown. We compared MCS on gravity stress (GS) radiographs to GS and weight bearing (WB) cone-beam CT (CBCT). METHODS: An AO SER 44B3.1 ankle fracture was simulated in 10 human cadavers, also serving as controls. MCS was measured on GS radiographs, GS CBCT, and a simulated WB CBCT scan. Specimens were stable if MCS was <5 mm and unstable if MCS was ≥5 mm. Paired t tests …

Unilateral Complete Agenesis of Mesonephric Duct Derivatives in an 82-year-Old Male Cadaver: Embryology, Anatomy and Clinical Considerations.

Development of urogenital anatomy in the human fetus is the result of a complex interplay between multiple different tissues. The time course of development is well documented and the morphologic outcomes of insults at various time points during development are predictable. We present a cadaveric case of unilateral agenesis of the left kidney, ureter, bladder hemitrigone, ureteric opening, seminal vesicle, vas deferens, and epididymis. Failure of development of the mesonephric duct early during embryogenesis, likely between the third and fifth week, caused ipsilateral urogenital organ agenesis…

Rupture length of the sinus membrane after 1.2 mm puncture and surgical sinus elevation: an experimental animal cadaver study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the rupture length of the sinus membrane after applying a defined 1.2 mm defect comparing 3 different techniques: Summers lift, balloon-assisted technique (BASL), and hydrodynamic ultrasonic cavitational sinus lift (HUCSL). STUDY DESIGN: Thirty fresh sheep heads (60 maxillary sinuses) were investigated. The sinus membrane was ruptured using a 1.2 mm pilot drill. Then Summers lift, BASL, and HUCSL were each performed on 20 sinuses, creating a 5 mm vertical lift of the sinus membrane. The length of the ruptured sinus membrane was measured before and after the experiment.

ACL reconstruction using the Rigidfix femoral fixation device via the anteromedial portal: a cadaver study to evaluate chondral injuries.

The aim of this anatomic descriptive cadaver study is to evaluate the entrance points of cross-pins and the possible chondral damages, using a two cross-pin femoral fixation device via anteromedial portal, during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Twenty fresh-frozen cadaver knees (12 cadavers) were tested. We employed the Rigidfix Cross Pin device (Mitek, Norwood, MA), designed to use two biodegradable pins (PLA, length 42 mm, diameter 2.7 mm). Instead of PLA pins, we used color coded metallic pins. Femoral tunnel drilling and cross-pin guide insertions were performed through th…

Pushing the envelope in renal preservation; improved results with novel perfusate modifications for pulsatile machine perfusion of cadaver kidneys.

INTRODUCTION: Novel preservation techniques may diminish ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Our preservation laboratory has modified Belzer MPS for machine perfusion (MP) with prostaglandin E1 (PGE 1), nitroglycerin (NTG), and polyethylene glycol-superoxide dismutase (PEG-SOD) to attenuate I/R injury. We reviewed our recent experience using this novel formulation (NF) compared with standard perfusates. RESULTS: Between January 1998 and March 2000, 1060 consecutive kidneys were preserved in our laboratory. One hundred forty-eight kidneys (14%) were discarded. Fifty-eight percent of kidneys dur

Surgical management of the facial nerve in craniofacial trauma and long-standing facial paralysis: cadaver study and clinical presentations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Examination of the extratemporal branches of the facial nerve reveals several branching patterns of the facial nerve, indicating the variability in the course of the nerve. Due to such variance, injury to this nerve often accompanies facial trauma and surgical dissection for the repair of facial bone injuries, and it may result in high morbidity. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A study of 12 fresh cadavers was performed to 1) review the variability in location of the extratemporal branches of the facial nerve, 2) identify the soft tissue injuries in which the facial nerve is…

A case study comparing the detection ability of cadaver detection dogs and electronic nose technology to a clandestine grave.

Cadaver detection dogs (CDDs) are one of the best tools to locate clandestinely buried human remains. However, large data gaps exist in what VOC classes and concentrations are targeted by CDDs for detection. This study compared the alert responses produced by CDDs used by the New South Wales Police Force to responses generated by an electronic nose (named the NOS.E) with metal oxide sensors to a clandestine burial. For confirmatory analysis, VOC samples of the clandestine burial were taken, and compounds were identified using GC × GC-TOFMS. While statistical work was limited due to sample size…

Development of an Improved Cadaveric Training Model for Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery Using Fresh-Frozen Cadavers.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS) is technically demanding and has a prolonged learning curve. Reports describing ECIRS training using fresh-frozen cadavers are limited, partly because intrarenal and pyelovenous backflow may prevent adequate hydronephrosis. This study aimed to establish an optimized ECIRS training model using fresh-frozen cadavers. METHODS: ECIRS cadaver surgical training (ECIRS-CST) was conducted between April 2021 and October 2022 and evaluated across two periods. In the first period, standard ECIRS-CST was performed. In the second period, laparosco…

Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry as part of an integrated multidisciplinary approach in a complex cadaver case.

The forensic investigation of severely decomposed or skeletonized human remains poses considerable diagnostic challenges, often limiting the effectiveness of traditional autopsy approaches. This study describes a homicide case involving partially skeletonized remains recovered in an abandoned rural building, demonstrating the crucial role of Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (SEM-EDS) in determining cause and manner of death. The investigation was carried out using a multidisciplinary approach including post-mortem computed tomography (MSCT), entomological analys
