BACKGROUND: Endoscopic surveillance is the clinical standard for Barrett's oesophagus, but its effectiveness is inconsistent. We have developed a test comprising a pan-oesophageal cell collection device coupled with biomarkers to stratify patients into three risk groups. We aimed to prospectively evaluate the prespecified risk stratification tool to establish whether it can identify those at highest risk of dysplasia or cancer to prioritise the timing of endoscopy; and safely be used to follow up the low-risk group, thus sparing patients from unnecessary endoscopies.

Barrett's esophagus (BE) predisposes patients to esophageal adenocarcinoma. 3 to 6% of individuals with gastro-esophageal reflux disease are estimated to have BE but only 20 to 25% of BE patients are currently diagnosed. This case report describes intestinal angiodysplasias as a cause of persisting anaemia in a 16-year-old girl with a failing Fontan circulation. Although this is a very rare cause of anaemia, we highlight the importance of video capsule endoscopy in such patients to initiate a life-saving treatment.

As from 1983, endoscopy with biopsy in general anesthesia was used instead of the capsule suction method in children with suspected coeliac disease in a county hospital. A study was carried out to evaluate mean endoscopy time, duration of general anesthesia, complications and quality of biopsies.
