BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is one of the most controversial diagnoses in clinical medicine. Despite many reports of operative and non-operative interventions, rigorous scientific investigation of this syndrome leading to evidence-based management is lacking. This is the first update of a review first published in 2010.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the beneficial and adverse effects of the available operative and non-operative interventions for the treatment of TOS a minimum of six months after the intervention.

Sports-related mechanisms of cervical and lumbar spine injury and their clinical presentations have been discussed. The keys to treatment of these injuries in the athlete include rehabilitation of the injured area, recognition of the mechanism of injury, and correction of any technical faults that may have contributed thereto. Criteria for return to sport are a critical part of the rehabilitation of the injured athlete. Most importantly, the practitioner can anticipate potential areas of injury and can recommend prehabilitation exercises to avert many of these injuries.

New onset focal weakness is relatively common in patients with Down syndrome (DS), and has broad differential diagnosis. Ten cases of new onset focal weakness in patients with DS were encountered or are currently being followed in two DS clinics, with a combined population of patients of approximately 850, for a clinic population prevalence of 1.2%.
