Although anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the preferred treatment for CDD disease, internal fixation with a titanium plate may cause various complications. Spinal osteophytic changes are known to be affected by differences in age, sex, population, and mechanical stress. We examined Joseon skeletons (n=87) to obtain vertebral osteophytosis data on a pre-modern Korean population. The mean osteophytic value (MOV) of vertebrae increased in the cervical-thoracic-lumbar order. More severe osteophytosis was found in the vertebrae (C5, T9, T10, and L4) farthest from the line of gravity, while the general pattern of vertebral osteophytosis appeared similar to those of previous reports on other skeletal series. Solitary osteochondromas, which are the most common benign bone tumors of long bones, are rarely found in the vertebral column. A 16-year-old female patient presented with a hard palpable mass at lower lumbar region like a congenital deformity. A 33-year-old para-3 was admitted in the 33rd week of gestation because of a suspected foetal anomaly. Ultrasound examination showed polyhydramnios, exaggerated cervico-thoracic lordosis and significant shortening of the spine because of a reduced number of vertebrae. The facial profile was flat, the foetal movements were rare and slow, and the extremities normal. A biopsy of the placenta revealed a normal female karyotype. Several dissections were performed to determine the level of spinal cord termination and the vertebral level at which the dorsal and ventral roots of spinal nerves C1-S4 emerged from the spinal cord in the rat. Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign hemorrhagic tumor, commonly revealed by local pain. The best treatment for this lesion is still controversial. We report the case of a patient with chronic neck pain revealing an ABC of the third cervical vertebra. After percutaneous injection of a small amount of polymethyl-methacrylate bone cement, the patient experienced significant clinical and radiological improvement.

We report a 17-year-old asymptomatic patient with a partially collapsed seventh cervical vertebra due to a haemangioma revealed by conventional radiographs performed for army enrollment. Given radiological evidence of aggressiveness, percutaneous vertebroplasty by injection of methyl methacrylate cement was performed to prevent complications. CT a year later showed no progression of the lesion. The patient remains asymptomatic.

The authors describe a patient with abnormal development of the cervical vertebrae and the formation of a block typical of the Klippel-Weil syndrome, as well as craniovertebral synostosis with the complete absence of the atlantooccipital joint, a bizarre and complicated course of the canals of vertebral arteries and sublingual nerves. A new method of dorsal arthrodesis in patients with atlanto-axial instability of different etiology is described. In three patients solid laminar osteosynthesis C1/C2 was achieved by insertion of an autogenous cortico-cancellous bone graft into the interlaminar space and by a bilateral application of the lately developed metal clamp. Cricoid pressure has been long used by clinicians to reduce the risk of aspiration during tracheal intubation. Historically, it is defined by Sellick as temporary occlusion of the upper end of the oesophagus by backward pressure of the cricoid cartilage against the bodies of the cervical vertebrae. The clinical relevance of cricoid pressure has been questioned despite its regular use in clinical practice. In this review, we address some of the controversies related to the use of cricoid pressure.

A 51-year-old woman with traumatic fracture-subluxation of C6-C7 vertebrae was treated by pedicle screw fixation. Among several methods for surgical treatment of the cervical spine, this technique provides a more rigid anchor to prevent collapsing or instability of the spinal column, particularly at the cervicothoracic junction. However, the risk of injuring the adjacent neurovascular structures cannot be completely eliminated. The characteristics of the cervicothoracic junction, surgical approaches and pedicle screw fixation techniques are emphasised.
