BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection and the genotype distribution of the strains among the clients seeking voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Taiwan.
METHODS: The VCT clients completed an anonymous self-administered questionnaire interview to inquire into the risks for sexually transmitted diseases, followed by providing a 10-mL first-catch urine specimen to detect C. trachomatis with the use of polymerase-chain-reaction assays. The genotyping of C. trachomatis strains was

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been localized in several extra-hepatic sites. Recent evidence suggests that the stomach can harbour HCV. We therefore evaluated the prevalence of gastric localization of HCV and its possible relationship with the chronic inflammatory response to Helicobacter pylori infection.
METHODS: Sixty patients with HCV infection (group A) and 60 subjects without HCV infection (control group), who underwent upper endoscopy for dyspeptic symptoms, were consecutively enrolled. Biopsy specimens of gastric mucosa obtained from each patient were assessed for H. pylori

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Acute exacerbations pose a diagnostic challenge due to the difficulty in distinguishing active Crohn's disease from other causes, particularly infections. While Clostridium difficile infection is well-documented and typically screened for in symptomatic Crohn's patients, other enteric infections are often under-recognized and lack sufficient evidence. We report the case of a 17-year-old male with known colonic Crohn's disease who presented with a five-day history of fever and diarrhea. Initial

The contribution of virus components to liberation of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) progeny virions from the surface of infected cells is poorly understood. We report that the HSV-2 mutant deficient in the expression of a mucin-like membrane-associated glycoprotein G (mgG) exhibited defect in the release of progeny virions from infected cells manifested by ~2 orders of magnitude decreased amount of infectious virus in a culture medium as compared to native HSV-2. Electron microscopy revealed that the mgG deficient virions were produced in infected cells and present at the cell surface. T

The Yezo sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) on the island of Hokkaido, Japan are currently recognized as overabundant. Hunting is used to control the deer population, and this has increased the supply of game meat, which is associated with a high risk of various food-borne infections. Additionally, the sub-prefecture Tokachi has a dense population of livestock, which are potentially at risk of cross-species infections from the deer. In this study, we undertook the first analysis of the incidence of Cryptosporidium infection in the Yezo sika deer in the Tokachi area using polymerase chain reac

Macroautophagy/autophagy is a critical modulator of pathogen invasion response in vertebrates and invertebrates. However, how it affects mosquito-borne viral pathogens that significantly burden public health remains relatively underexplored. To address this gap, we use a genetic approach to activate autophagy in the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) infected with a recombinant Sindbis virus (SINV) expressing an autophagy activator. We first demonstrate a 17-amino acid peptide ("AaBec-1") derived from the Ae. aegypti Atg6/BECN1 (Autophagy-related 6) gene is sufficient to induce autophagy in

INTRODUCTION: A class of disorders known as inborn errors of immunity (IEI) is defined by a compromised or missing immune response, which increases the vulnerability to infections, immunological dysregulation, and cancer. Severe combined immunodeficiencies (SCIDs), affecting both T and B-cell function are rare but often severe diseases. In this report, we describe a 10-month-old SCID patient from Sudan with disseminated BCG infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-month-old boy whose parents were first degree relatives, presented with a six-month history of repeated chest infections and fever. Phys

The interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha (IL-4Rα), ubiquitously expressed on both innate and adaptive immune cells, controls the signaling of archetypal type 2 immune regulators; IL-4 and IL-13, which elicit their signaling action by the type 1 IL-4Rα/gamma common and/or the type 2 IL-4Rα/IL-13Rα complexes. Global gene-deficient mouse models targeting IL-4, IL-13, or the IL-4Rα chain, followed by the development of conditional mice and generation of important cell-type-specific IL-4Rα-deficient mouse models, were indeed critical to gaining in-depth understanding of detrimental T helper (Th) 2 mec

Infection of susceptible C57BL/6 mice with defective LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus causes disease termed murine acquired immune deficiency syndrome (MAIDS). The disease is characterized by lymphoadenopathy, hyperimmunoglobulinemia, and immune deficiency in both T and B cell functions. The development of disease requires the presence of mature T cells, especially CD4 T cells, and B cells. It has previously been shown that a B cell tumor line derived from MAIDS mouse stimulated a large fraction of unprimed T cells based on TCR V beta chain expression. This stimulatory activity was assumed to be m

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that infects both humans and domestic animals. Although HEV has been detected in sheep, the risks of transmission along the food chain via the mutton industry chain remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to assess the occupational risk of HEV infection among sheep industry workers. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among sheep workers in various settings, including smallholder farms, slaughterhouses, and retail markets. Serum samples from these workers, as well as from individuals in the general population, were collected and

A human immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) antibody oligomer was isolated from a transfected myeloma cell line that produced a monoclonal antibody to group B streptococci. Compared to the IgG1 monomer, the oligomer was significantly more effective at protecting neonatal rats from infection in vivo. The oligomer was also shown to cross the placenta and to be stable in neonatal rats. Immunochemical analysis and complementary DNA sequencing showed that the transfected cell line produced two distinct kappa light chains: a normal light chain (Ln) with a molecular mass of 25 kilodaltons and a 37-kilodalton sp

We investigated the occurrence of Leishmania infantum chagasi in Didelphis albiventris opossums at a wild animal rehabilitation center in the city of Campo Grande, Brazil. A total of 54 opossums were tested for L. i. chagasi infection in peripheral blood and bone marrow samples. The samples were analyzed by direct examination, culturing in a specific medium, and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Leishmania i. chagasi DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in 11 (20.37%) animals. A total of 81.81% of positive opos

Superhydrophobicity, a natural phenomenon commonly observed in plants and insects, imparts diverse functionalities, including self-cleaning capabilities and antibiofouling properties. Nature's design of a superhydrophobic surface relies on a combination of surface chemistry and hierarchical roughness at micro- and nanoscales, inspiring the design of artificial superhydrophobic coatings. These multifunctional coatings offer a promising approach for combating fungal infections that are becoming increasingly prevalent due to global warming and increased resistance to conventional fungicides. What is already known about this topic? Though coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has largely been controlled in China, several outbreaks of COVID-19 have occurred from importation of cases or of suspected virus-contaminated products. Though several outbreaks have been traced to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) isolated on the outer packaging of cold chain products, live virus has not been obtained. What is added by this report? In September 2020, two dock workers were detected as having asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection using throat swabs during routine screening

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most frequently co-isolated pathogens in polymicrobial infections, where interspecies interactions contribute to enhanced virulence, persistence, and antimicrobial tolerance. Nutrient availability plays a central role in these interactions as microorganisms compete for resources to sustain essential cellular processes. For instance, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are critical for protein synthesis, and valine synthesis pathway precursors are essential for energy production. In S. aureus, BCAAs are also the precursors for branched-chain fatty

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis viverrini infection is a significant health problem in several countries, especially Southeast Asia. The infection causes acute gastro-hepatic symptoms and also long-term infection leading to carcinogenesis of an aggressive bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma; CCA). Hence, the early diagnosis of O. viverrini infection could be the way out of this situation. Still, stool examination by microscopic-based methods, the current diagnostic procedure is restricted by low parasite egg numbers in the specimen and unprofessional laboratorians. The immunological procedure provid

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important public health problem and is responsible for both acute and chronic viral hepatitis. Public health implications of HEV are derived from its transmission route, either water-borne or food-borne, and its zoonotic potential. Not only in developing countries, but HEV cases are also found in a high number in developed countries. The spread of HEV to the environment might pollute surface waters, which could act as the source of infection for both humans and animals. Identification of the virus in animal products suggests the circulation of HEV within water and

A goal of HIV vaccine development is to elicit antibodies with neutralizing breadth. Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) to HIV often have unusual sequences with long heavy-chain complementarity-determining region loops, high somatic mutation rates and polyreactivity. A subset of HIV-infected individuals develops such antibodies, but it is unclear whether this reflects systematic differences in their antibody repertoires or is a consequence of rare stochastic events involving individual clones. We sequenced antibody heavy-chain repertoires in a large cohort of HIV-infected individuals with

Immunosuppression is a characteristic feature of chronic leishmaniasis. The dynamicity and the functional cross talks of host immune responses during Leishmania infection are still not clearly understood. Here we explored the functional aspects of accumulation of immune suppressive cellular and cytokine milieu during the progression of murine visceral leishmaniasis. In addition to IL-10 and TGF-β, investigation on the responses of different subunit chains of IL-12 family revealed a progressive elevation of EBI-3 and p35 chains of EBI-3 with Leishmania donovani infection in BALB/c mice. The exp
