Comparison of the adaptive functioning of children prenatally exposed to alcohol to a nonexposed clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Several studies show impairments in the social and adaptive behaviors of children prenatally exposed to alcohol. However, there remains limited consensus on whether the alcohol exposure directly affects social functioning or whether its effect is mediated by deficits in IQ. In addition, no studies have investigated whether deficits in social functioning are significantly more pronounced in children prenatally exposed to alcohol than in children referred to psychiatric treatment who were not prenatally exposed. We explored the effect of alcohol exposure on social and adaptive functi

Fostering Infant Responsivity and Reciprocity - Support to Thrive (FIRRST): a multisite randomized control trial of a pre-emptive telehealth intervention for infants with early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Early prodromal signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be detected within the first year of life, a period of heightened neuroplasticity. Pre-emptive, parent-mediated interventions delivered during this window may improve developmental outcomes and reduce ASD symptom severity, but evidence from adequately powered randomized trials in Europe remains limited. Early prodromal signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be detected within the first year of life, a period of heightened neuroplasticity. Pre-emptive, parent-mediated interventions delivered during this window may impr

Magnitude, distribution and determinants of non-utilization of antenatal care services among women in low- and middle-income countries: Insights for implementation of WHO recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a pivotal stage that fosters health and prepares women and their families for the transition to parenthood. Antenatal care (ANC) encompasses the services provided by skilled healthcare professionals to pregnant women and adolescent girls, ensuring optimal health outcomes for both mother and child throughout pregnancy. The majority of maternal and child deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to essential healthcare services, including ANC, remains a significant challenge. This study was aimed to assess the magnitude, spatial distributio

Child Development and Family Human Capital Investment Decisions in Nigeria: a Study of Selected States in the Six Geo-Political Zones.

The study examined child development and family human capital investment decisions in Nigeria. The study focused on household per capita income and family structure using the Nigeria living standard survey for 2018/2019 for the secondary data analysis and a field survey conducted by the researchers in six states in each of the geopolitical zones in Nigeria for the primary data analysis. The study was anchored on household utility maximization theory using the ordinary least squares (OLS) method to analyse the secondary data. Four different results were obtained. First, the result of findings f

Interventions that address institutional child maltreatment: An evidence and gap map.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment has serious short and long-term negative impacts for those experiencing it. Child maltreatment occurring in institutional settings has recently received substantial attention. However, evidence about the effectiveness of interventions that prevent, disclose, respond to, or treat maltreatment that has occurred in these environments is fragmented and can be difficult to access. This evidence and gap map (EGM) collates this research evidence. It was developed as a resource for stakeholders operating in the child health, welfare and protection sectors, including prac

Bridging the policy-practice gap: A call for urgent early intervention and early education South African policy reform for children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

In the global context, South Africa demonstrates higher disabling-hearing-loss prevalence rates than high-income countries because of its contextual challenges such as high burden of disease and audiology service access inequity. While high-income countries demonstrate integrated Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programmes with mandated support, South Africa faces distinctive challenges in translating its early intervention policy precepts into actionable support systems, with fragmentation across health, social development, and education sectors for children who are deaf or har

Pilot Study on the Assessment of Therapeutic Education in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Introduction: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder primarily managed through insulin therapy, which is crucial for achieving optimal glycemic control in children and adolescents. Therapeutic education is essential, equipping patients and their families with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective self-management. This familial support plays a critical role in the success of therapy and in fostering an environment conducive to the child's self-management of the condition. A core objective of therapeutic education is the prevention of complications associated

Psychosocial risks and mental health of preschool care providers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment in daycare is a public health issue. As childcare is stressful, high care provider negativity independently predicts more internalizing behaviour problems, affecting children's psycho-neurological development. This study aimed to determine psychosocial factors associated with the mental health of preschool care providers in Kuala Lumpur. METHODS: A random cluster sampling cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2019. The study involved registered care providers for preschoolers under four years old without acute psychiatric illness. The Center for Epidemiologic

Speech therapy and parenting for early socio-communicative skills in young children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (SPEAK): study protocol for an Italian multicentre randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDs) affect early communication, social engagement and parent-child interactions. Children with NDs often struggle with prelinguistic skills, such as maintaining eye contact and using gestures, which are essential for language development. Parenting behaviour plays a key role in fostering these abilities, and early interventions involving parents can enhance socio-communicative and linguistic outcomes. The present multicentred randomised controlled trial evaluates the effectiveness of a parent-involved speech therapy intervention in improving earl

Learning From Strengths: Improving Care by Comparing Perinatal Approaches Between Japan and Canada and Identifying Future Research Priorities.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Canada and Japan each have strengths that can inform clinical decision-making, research, and health care policy regarding the prevention of PTB and its sequelae. Our objectives were to: 1) compare PTB rates, risk factors, management, and outcomes between Japan and Canada; 2) establish research priorities while fostering future collaborative opportunities; and 3) undertake knowledge translation of these findings. METHODS: We conducted a literature review to identify publications that examined PTB r

Why cultural ecosystem services matter most: Exploring the pathways linking greenspaces and mental health in a low-income country.

Exposure to urban greenspaces promotes a variety of mental health benefits. However, much of the evidence for these benefits is biased towards high-income countries. In contrast, urban areas in low-income settings that have the highest rates of urbanisation remain understudied. Given the increasing burden of mental ill-health associated with urbanisation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), there is a clear need to better understand the role urban greenspaces play in mitigating mental ill-health. Here we use a novel combination of research methods (participatory video, focus groups and
