[Non-accidental injuries in childhood and the nature of their appearance].

Child abuse has been the leading cause of death in pediatric patients for a long time. The subject is complex in its etiology, appearance, consequences and prognosis. To be confronted with the patient is emotional. Inpatient treatment at a pediatric centre should be performed in any suspicious cases of non-accidental injury. The child protection group consists of one pediatric specialist as well as four ward physicians, one psychotherapist, two staff nurses and one graduated social worker. The team's aims are the early detection of violence towards children, the safeguarding of child protectio

Participants were mothers (N=45) of children (55.6% female; Mage=7.7±4.5) with cleft lip/palate (46.7%), craniosynostosis (46.7%), or other craniofacial diagnoses (6.6%). Most children had completed 5 to 10 surgeries (51.1%). Participants completed t

A national educational campaign to raise awareness of child physical abuse among health care professionals.

Education is necessary to improve child physical abuse detection and management. A few studies have described national child abuse training programs, but none has measured changes in knowledge among participants. A collaboration of child abuse experts from the USA, an academic pediatric department, and a non-governmental organization in child protection aimed at (a) training hospital physicians in a train-the-trainer course for the detection and management of child physical abuse and (b) conducting workshops and measuring attendance and gain of knowledge of participants. Nonoffending Guardian Assessment of Hospital-Based Sexual Abuse/Assault Services for Children.

In circumstances in which child sexual abuse/assault is suspected, pediatric guidelines recommend referral to services such as multidisciplinary hospital-based violence treatment centers, for specialized medical treatment, forensic documentation, and counseling. As little is known about how such services are perceived, the objective of this case report was to measure the satisfaction of nonoffending guardians of child sexual abuse/assault victims who presented for care at Ontario's hospital-based sexual assault treatment centers. Of the 1,136 individuals who reported sexual abuse/assault and w

[Epidemiological study of asthmatic crises in a maternal-child emergency service].

In our region, allergic respiratory diseases affects over 55% of the child up to 5 years. This could be attributed to some peculiarities of our region, such as consanguinity, climate and predominant sensitisation to dermatophagoides mite. We made an epidemiologic study on the bronchospasm urgent cases attended in the Urgency Unit of our Maternal-Child Hospital in Las Palmas. We took 935 patients with a mean age of 32.36 months with acute attacks of bronchospasm, and found no significant difference between patients from the Northern and Southern zones of the island. Bronchospasm cases were more

134 battered children: a medical and psychological study.

A controlled investigation of 134 battered children showed that nearly half had serious injuries and 21 died. Sixty-five had been battered more than once, 20 had permanent neurological sequelae, a quarter were low birth weight babies, and 10 had serious congenital defects. Twenty-three had been previously admitted to hospital with failure to thrive and the overlap with physical neglect was considerable. Mortality and morbidity among their siblings was also high. Difficulties with the child were attributable to interaction with neurotic mothers. The risk of battering diminishes after a child's s

Child firesetters: a study of three populations.

Child firesetting constitutes a serious and widespread problem, yet little definitive evidence exists distinguishing child firesetters from their nonfiresetting peers. The authors studied the characteristics of 186 firesetters and 165 age- and sex-matched controls at two state psychiatric hospitals for children, six community mental health centers, and a children's medical hospital. Their findings failed to corroborate results of other studies that have suggested correlations between firesetting and enuresis, sexual conflicts, low intelligence, large family size, economic deprivation, adoption

A review of stroke and pregnancy: incidence, management and prevention.

Stroke, defined as a focal or global disturbance of cerebral function lasting over 24h resulting from disruption of its blood supply, is a devastating event for a pregnant woman. This can result in long-term disability or death, and impact on her family and unborn child. In addition to pre-existing patient risk factors, the hypercoagulable state and pre-eclampsia need to be taken into account. The patterns and types of stroke affect pregnant women differ from the non-pregnant female population of child-bearing age. Like other thrombo-embolic diseases in pregnancy, stroke is essentially a disea

Acute biliary pancreatitis and cholecystolithiasis in a child: one time treatment with laparoendoscopic "rendez-vous" procedure.

Acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP) is rare in childhood and endoscopic sphincterotomy should be avoided in the child due to the risk of both early and late complications but, when necessary, the optimal timing between endoscopic procedure and cholecystectomy is still uncertain. A nine years old child with acute biliary pancreatitis underwent successful laparo-endoscopic "Rendez-Vous" procedure in which endoscopic drainage of the common bile duct and laparoscopic cholecystectomy were performed simultaneously. This is the first case reported of laparo-endoscopic Rendez-Vous in a child. The excelle

Care of the pediatric near-drowning victim. A nursing challenge.

In the pediatric near-drowning victim, hypoxia and related pathophysiologic factors affect the pulmonary, neurologic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and renal systems. Other complications arise from the potential for infection; the immobile state; and anxiety and fear related to the hospitalization. Altered coping mechanisms and knowledge deficits related to home care and drowning prevention offer problems that the family must overcome during the recovery of their child from the near-drowning insult. Using this knowledge and the accurate, comprehensive ongoing nursing assessments, the nurse

Changing pattern of poisoning in children in Newcastle, 1974-81.

All children aged under 15 years admitted to hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne between 1974 and 1981 with a diagnosis of poisoning were studied. After the introduction in 1976 of child resistant containers for salicylates and paracetamol, salicylate poisonings fell dramatically. The other most important medicines to cause poisoning in young children were tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazapines, Lomotil (diphenoxylate and atropine), and iron preparations; these should also be packaged in child resistant containers by regulation. Few children had symptoms after poisoning with household products
