Hydroxyl radical bursts triggered by long-term nitrate accumulation accelerate deep soil organic carbon mineralization.

Soils below 1 m depth store approximately 50% of global terrestrial soil organic carbon (SOC), yet the mechanisms by which long-term nitrate (NO3-) accumulation influences deep SOC mineralization remain poorly understood. Here, we combined depth-resolved field measurements from a 26-year fertilization experiment with short-term microcosm incubations to examine whether long-term NO3- accumulation promotes hydroxyl radical (•OH) production and deep SOC mineralization. The study was conducted in a calcareous fluvo-aquic soil under a winter wheat-summer maize rotation in the North China Plain, Chi

Association of sTREM2 and YKL-40 With Alzheimer's Disease Progression: A Systematic Review.

Neuroinflammation is recognized as a core feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (sTREM2) and chitinase-3-like protein 1 (YKL-40) are fluid biomarkers of microglial and astrocytic reactivity associated with AD progression. However, their coupling to amyloid and tau pathology, stage-specific roles, and prognostic utility remain unclear. This systematic review synthesized evidence from 2021 to 2025 on associations of sTREM2 and YKL-40 with AD progression. This review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Stress-resilient endophytic bacteria from mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) with biocontrol and plant growth-promoting potential.

Plant growth-promoting endophytes with combined abiotic stress tolerance and biocontrol capacity are critical for sustainable agriculture. However, the functional diversity of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.)-associated bacterial communities and potential trade-offs between stress adaptation and antagonistic activity remain poorly understood. This study characterized endophytic bacteria from seeds and roots of mung bean cultivated in Ethiopia, to identify stress-resilient strains with biocontrol and plant growth-promoting potential. Twenty-eight endophytic bacteria were isolated from seeds (n = 16

Uranium exposure and kidney tubule biomarkers in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies indicate that uranium exposure is toxic to the kidney tubules. We evaluated the association of urinary uranium concentrations with biomarkers of tubule cell dysfunction (alpha-1-microglobulin [A1M], uromodulin [UMOD], epidermal growth factor [EGF]), and tubule cell injury (kidney injury molecule-1 [KIM-1], monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 [MCP-1], and chitinase-3-like protein 1 [YKL-40]), as well as with albuminuria and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) among participants in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). METHODS: We conducted a

Urine Epidermal Growth Factor and Kidney Function Decline in Middle-Aged Adults.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis and prognostication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) largely rely on glomerular measures that may not reflect tubular damage. We investigated the associations of urine kidney tubule biomarkers with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) change among middle-aged adults, when chronic diseases typically emerge. STUDY DESIGN: An observational cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1,145 participants of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study without CKD, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease at the year 20 visit. Swimming induces physiological cardioprotection associated with pro-growth versus anti-inflammatory influences in extracardiac organs.

Physical activity improves myocardial structure, function, and resilience via complex, incompletely defined mechanisms. We explored the effects of 1- to 2-wk swim training on cardiac and systemic phenotype in young male C57Bl/6 mice. Two-week forced swimming (90 min twice daily) resulted in cardiac hypertrophy (22% increase in heart:body weight, P < 0.01), with improved inotropy (22% higher left ventricular +dP/dt, P < 0.01) and functional tolerance to ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) (40%-50% reductions in stunning and diastolic dysfunction, P < 0.01; without changes in cell death assessed from enz

Unraveling the Impact of Secreted Proteases on Hypervirulence in Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus controls the progression of infection through the coordinated production of extracellular proteases, which selectively modulate virulence determinant stability. This is evidenced by our previous finding that a protease-null strain has a hypervirulent phenotype in a murine model of sepsis, resulting from the unchecked accumulation of virulence factors. Here, we dissect the individual roles of these proteases by constructing and assessing the pathogenic potential of a combinatorial protease mutant library. When strains were constructed bearing increasing numbers of secreted

Early microglial activation and peripheral inflammation in dementia with Lewy bodies.

Inflammation is increasingly recognized as part of the pathology of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, but its role in dementia with Lewy bodies remains unclear. Using multimodal imaging and peripheral cytokine analysis, we therefore investigated central and peripheral inflammation in this common form of dementia. Nineteen participants with probable dementia with Lewy bodies and 16 similarly aged controls underwent 3 T MRI and PET imaging with 11C-PK11195, a marker of microglial activation in vivo. Peripheral blood inflammatory cytokines were also

Comparative proteomic and metabolomic profiling of citrus fruit with enhancement of disease resistance by postharvest heat treatment.

BACKGROUND: From field harvest to the consumer's table, fresh citrus fruit spends a considerable amount of time in shipment and storage. During these processes, physiological disorders and pathological diseases are the main causes of fruit loss. Heat treatment (HT) has been widely used to maintain fruit quality during postharvest storage; however, limited molecular information related to this treatment is currently available at a systemic biological level. RESULTS: Mature 'Kamei' Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) fruits were selected for exploring the disease resistance mechanisms induce

Antigenic, chemical, and structural properties of cell walls of Histoplasma capsulatum yeast-form chemotypes 1 and 2 after serial enzymatic hydrolysis.

Cell walls of Histoplasma capsulatum yeast-form chemotypes 1 (chem 1) and 2 (chem 2) treated sequentially with several polysaccharolytic enzymes and Pronase yielded soluble, nondialyzable polysaccharides at each step, which were analyzed for monosaccharides, protein composition, and serological activity. Polysaccharide recovered after digestion of chem 1 walls with beta(1-->3)-glucanase contained glucose > mannose > glucosamine > galactose. This fraction (chem 1 betaG(1)) was analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and contained a component having an apparent molecular weight of 120,000

Association of Alzheimer's disease progression with YKL40 levels in peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Chitinase 3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1 or YKL40) is a potential neuroinflammatory biomarker linked to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous studies have produced inconsistent results regarding YKL40 levels in various clinical stages of AD. This study aims to establish the correlation between YKL40 levels and AD progression through a meta-analysis of YKL40 levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and peripheral blood. METHODS: Comprehensive searches were conducted in PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to identify observational studies reporting CSF

Systemic-airway eosinophil discordance and sputum mediator profiling in severe asthma treated with biologics: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Biologic therapies have expanded treatment options for severe asthma; however, systemic biomarkers do not always reflect airway inflammation. Induced sputum may provide complementary information for inflammatory phenotyping and for exploring predictors of treatment response. OBJECTIVES: To characterize sputum inflammatory profiles in severe asthma using a three-group stratification by peripheral blood eosinophils (PBE) and sputum eosinophils, and to explore whether sputum soluble mediators relate to clinical remission after anti–IL-4Rα therapy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed
