An inconvenient mandate: Margaret Thatcher, neoliberalism, and the politics of climate change, 1987-90.

Between 1987 and 1990, Margaret Thatcher became one of the most high-profile world leaders to warn publicly of anthropogenic climate change. This article argues that her apparent 'green turn' was not a moral conversion or a departure from Thatcherism, but a strategic adaptation of it. Drawing on declassified Prime Minister's Office files, Cabinet correspondence, and private papers, it shows that climate policy was shaped through a 'neoliberal filter' that favoured responses compatible with fiscal discipline, technological modernization, and market logics. As a result, ministers supported clima

Disease risk in a dynamic environment: the spread of tick-borne pathogens in Minnesota, USA.

As humans and climate change alter the landscape, novel disease risk scenarios emerge. Understanding the complexities of pathogen emergence and subsequent spread as shaped by landscape heterogeneity is crucial to understanding disease emergence, pinpointing high-risk areas, and mitigating emerging disease threats in a dynamic environment. Tick-borne diseases present an important public health concern and incidence of many of these diseases are increasing in the United States. The complex epidemiology of tick-borne diseases includes strong ties with environmental factors that influence host ava

Impact of Climate Warming on All-Causes Mortality in China: The Role of Non-Optimal Temperature Exposure and Multi-Scenario Projections to 2050.

Global warming intensifies non-optimal temperature exposure (consisting of high and low temperature), which poses severe threats to human health. As the world's most populous country located in temperate and subtropical zones, China is highly vulnerable to temperature-related mortality, with distinct yearly and population disparities in health risks. To investigate the impact of non-optimal temperature exposure on China's all-causes mortality during 1990-2023 and project future trends (2024-2050) under different climate change scenarios. Integrated CN05.1 gridded observational data, CMIP6 clim

Susceptibility to Photosynthesis Suppression From Extreme Storms Is Highly Site-Dependent.

Extreme storms are becoming more intense and frequent under climate change. Although these extreme wet events are smaller in extent and duration than drought events, recent evidence suggests the global impact of both extremes is similar. However, the impact of individual extreme storms on photosynthesis-and therefore on vegetation and the carbon cycle-remains difficult to predict, as photosynthesis may be suppressed via waterlogging or increased by the alleviation of moisture stress. Here, we use random forest models to calculate daily photosynthesis anomalies attributable to extreme soil mois

Epidemic malaria dynamics in Ethiopia: the role of self-limiting, poverty, HIV, climate change and human population growth.

BACKGROUND: During the last two decades, researchers have suggested that the changes of malaria cases in African highlands were driven by climate change. Recently, a study claimed that the malaria cases (Plasmodium falciparum) in Oromia (Ethiopia) were related to minimum temperature. Critics highlighted that other variables could be involved in the dynamics of the malaria. The literature mentions that beyond climate change, trends in malaria cases could be involved with HIV, human population size, poverty, investments in health control programmes, among others. METHODS: Population ecologists

[Climate and air pollution].

Climate and air pollution are closely related. On the one hand, the climate is more and more influenced, locally as well as globally, by the tremendous concentration of pollutants in our atmosphere. Certain elements of the climate are, on the other hand, directly responsible for the process of dilution and dispersion of pollution emission. Of particular importance is the phenomen of ventilation and inversion. The significance of knowing the regional climatic peculiarities is presented by ways of a smallspace-example of the ventilation existing at the valley of river Aare and of the frequency o

Machine-learning model led design to experimentally test species thermal limits: The case of kissing bugs (Triatominae).

Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) determines habitat suitability of a species across geographic areas using macro-climatic variables; however, micro-habitats can buffer or exacerbate the influence of macro-climatic variables, requiring links between physiology and species persistence. Experimental approaches linking species physiology to micro-climate are complex, time consuming and expensive. E.g., what combination of exposure time and temperature is important for a species thermal tolerance is difficult to judge a priori. We tackled this problem using an active learning approach that util

Impacts of transportation sector emissions on future U.S. air quality in a changing climate. Part II: Air quality projections and the interplay between emissions and climate change.

In Part II of this work we present the results of the downscaled offline Weather Research and Forecasting/Community Multiscale Air Quality (WRF/CMAQ) model, included in the "Technology Driver Model" (TDM) approach to future U.S. air quality projections (2046-2050) compared to a current-year period (2001-2005), and the interplay between future emission and climate changes. By 2046-2050, there are widespread decreases in future concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia (NH3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter w

Association of Ambient Temperature With the Prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence Among Partnered Women in Low- and Middle-Income South Asian Countries.

IMPORTANCE: Intimate partner violence (IPV), including physical, sexual, and emotional violence, constitutes a critical public health problem, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While climate change could escalate violent events, data quantifying its possible association with IPV are scant. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of ambient temperature with the prevalence of IPV among partnered women in low- and middle-income countries in South Asia, and to estimate the association of future climate warming with IPV. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study

Parameters of 150 temperate and boreal tree species and provenances for an individual-based forest landscape and disturbance model.

Understanding the impacts of changing climate and disturbance regimes on forest ecosystems is greatly aided by the use of process-based models. Such models simulate processes based on first principles of ecology, which requires parameterization. Parameterization is an important step in model development and application, defining the characteristics of trees and their responses to the environment, i.e., their traits. For species-specific models, parameterization is usually done at the level of individual species. Parameterization is indispensable for accurately modeling demographic processes, i

Divergent growth and wood anatomical responses of European larch and Swiss stone pine to climate variability at alpine treeline ecotones.

Climate change is reshaping high-elevation forests in the European Alps, with species- and site-specific differences in the climate sensitivity of conifers being increasingly reported in treeline ecotones. However, a detailed understanding of how two dominant and co-occurring species, Larix decidua and Pinus cembra, respond to climate variability at inter- and intra-annual temporal scales and across treeline ecotones with different environmental settings is lacking. To address this gap, we analyzed chronologies of wood anatomical traits (earlywood lumen area, EWLA, and latewood cell wall thick

A Framework for Weather-Driven Dengue Virus Transmission Dynamics in Different Brazilian Regions.

This study investigated a model to assess the role of climate fluctuations on dengue (DENV) dynamics from 2010 to 2019 in four Brazilian municipalities. The proposed transmission model was based on a preexisting SEI-SIR model, but also incorporates the vector vertical transmission and the vector's egg compartment, thus allowing rainfall to be introduced to modulate egg-hatching. Temperature and rainfall satellite data throughout the decade were used as climatic model inputs. A sensitivity analysis was performed to understand the role of each parameter. The model-simulated scenario was compared

Climate and human-driven changes in malaria vector distribution in China: implications for Anopheles species management.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes, remains a major global health threat. While China achieved malaria-free certification in 2021, the country remains vulnerable to imported cases, a risk exacerbated by climate change and human activities. Accurate predictions of malaria vector distributions are essential for effective prevention and management. RESULTS: We employed the Bayesian additive regression trees (BART) model to assess the current distribution of Anopheles sinensis and Anopheles lesteri in China, incorporating recent occurrence data alongside climatic, soil, huma

To burn or valorise bark from a pulp mill: Environmental sustainability analysis using prospective consequential life cycle assessment.

Bark represents 10 % dry weight of spruce trees and is a major side stream from pulp production. Currently, pulp mills burn bark to produce energy with a low economic value, directly emitting biogenic carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Biorefining bark using a continuous flow-through fractionation process generates high added-value compounds (tall oil, starch, phenol, and pulp) that allow for extended carbon storage durations. This study assesses the potential future environmental impacts of valorising bark instead of burning it. We conduct a LCA study combining a prospective consequential mode

Development and application of a multi-task oriented deep learning model for quantifying drivers of air pollutant variations: A case study in Taiyuan, China.

Quantitative assessment of the drivers behind the variation of six criteria pollutants, namely fine particulate matter (PM2.5), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM10), and carbon monoxide (CO), in the warming climate will be critical for subsequent decision-making. Here, a novel hybrid model of multi-task oriented CNN-BiLSTM-Attention was proposed and performed in Taiyuan during 2015-2020 to synchronously and quickly quantify the impact of anthropogenic and meteorological factors on the six criteria pollutants variations. Empirical results revealed

Modelling interactive effects of multiple disturbances on a coastal lake ecosystem: Implications for management.

Coastal lakes, also known as temporarily open/closed estuaries or intermittently closed and open lakes and lagoons, are common worldwide, are typically sites of high biodiversity and often contain abundant macrophyte populations. Anthropogenic stressors such as increased nutrient and sediment loading have adverse effects on submerged macrophytes, and when closed, the lack of tidal flushing makes coastal lakes highly susceptible to eutrophication. Lake openings to the sea may occur naturally, but many coastal lakes are also opened artificially, often to reduce inundation of surrounding land. He

Integrating free-living amoebae into climate-microbiome and One Health frameworks.

Climate change is altering microbial ecosystems at a global scale, yet the role of free-living amoebae within these shifting microbiomes remains incompletely understood. Free-living amoebae occupy soil, water, air, and built environments, where they contribute to microbial diversity, regulate nutrient cycling, and host diverse bacterial, fungal, and viral microorganisms. As temperature, moisture, and land-use patterns change, amoebal behaviour and their associated microbiomes may shift in ways that may affect soil fertility, water quality, microbial network stability, and the persistence of op

Increased risk of endemic mosquito-borne diseases in Canada due to climate change.

There are currently over 80 species of mosquito endemic in Canada-although only a few of these carry pathogens that can cause disease in humans. West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus and the California serogroup viruses (including the Jamestown Canyon and snowshoe hare viruses) are mosquito-borne viruses that have been found to cause human infections in North America, including in Canada. Over the last 20 years, the incidence of most of these endemic mosquito-borne diseases (MBD) has increased approximately 10% in Canada, due in large part to climate change. It is anticipated that
