INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Combined proximal humerus fracture and glenohumeral dislocation in the pediatric population is extremely rare, with only few reports of such cases been reported. We review all cases of combined proximal humerus fracture and glenohumeral dislocation in the pediatric population and present a case of left proximal humerus fracture dislocation in a healthy 5-year-old girl.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old girl fell from 2 m height and landed on her left shoulder where she started to complain from severe left shoulder pain, inability to move her left shoulder and bruisi

A floating hip injury occurs in the setting of poly-trauma and is a rare and difficult problem to manage. Floating hip injuries require vigilant attention not only to the osseous injuries but also the surrounding compartments and soft tissue envelope. We report the case of a 35-year-old male with a lower extremity posterior wall acetabular fracture, ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture and a postero-superior hip dislocation. Closed reduction failed, necessitating an open reduction internal fixation of his hip dislocation and acetabular fracture. The patient then developed a thigh compartment syn

BACKGROUND: Surgical fixation is currently recommended for unstable anteromedial coronoid fractures, but the role of nonoperative management is not well defined. Our purpose was to report the functional and radiographic outcomes of select patients managed nonoperatively.
METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, 10 patients with anteromedial coronoid fractures underwent nonoperative treatment. Outcomes assessed included elbow range of motion (ROM), stability, strength, radiographs, and 3 functional questionnaires, including the Patient-Rated Elbow Evaluation, Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand, and

Tarsal cuneiform dislocation in association with Lisfranc fracture-dislocation is a rare pedal injury. In this report, we describe the case of a patient who sustained a dorsal dislocation of the intermediate cuneiform in association with tarsometatarsal fracture-dislocation following traumatic axial loading and torsion of his foot. A satisfactory outcome was achieved by treating the injury by means of closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation. ACFAS Level of Clinical Evidence: 4.

The authors present the case of a patient who developed an Aspergillosis flavus (A flavus) superficial cutaneous infection which was identified at the time of cast removal, 2 weeks after immobilization of a closed distal third humerus fracture. Clinical and microbiological findings, as well as the treatment of this patient, are reported. An otherwise healthy 27-year-old male presented to the orthopaedic surgery clinic 2 weeks after a closed distal humerus fracture, which was initially immobilized with a functional removable brace. Upon cast removal, the patient was noted to have significant br

Central Fracture Dislocation of the Hip is a rare condition requiring more attention in its management, caused by high-energy trauma and is often associated with other injuries. This case report presents a 57-years old female who was injured in a traffic accident and diagnosed with polytrauma, abdominal blunt trauma with 7th zone liver laceration, central fracture dislocation of the left hip associated with closed fracture left acetabulum anterior column and closed fracture left neck femur. Until now, there is no mandatory management to treat this kind of injury. Several surgical techniques we

BACKGROUND: Pediatric forearm fractures are a common presentation in emergency departments in Papua New Guinea. Often these children undergo "blind" closed reduction with reduction adequacy assessed by standard radiographs. This study aims to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of ultrasound (US) in guiding closed reduction of pediatric forearm fractures in a resource-limited setting.
METHODS: We recruited consecutive children with closed forearm fractures requiring reduction. A US scanner was used to visualize and aid fracture reductions. The outcome measures were the rate of successful redu

BACKGROUND: Isolated tibial shaft (ITS) fracture with intact fibula is a common injury but records often fail to mention it. Our primary aim was to study the effect of the intact fibula in ITS fractures in closed and open injuries and that these fractures can unite without a primary fibulectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 56 patients who sustained an ITS fracture with an intact fibula who underwent closed or open reduction and reamed intramedullary interlocking nailing (IM IL nail) for closed and open fractures between August 2008 and April 2014 were included in this study. Four patients were los

One hundred and thirty-six consecutive fractures of the ankle were assessed over a 2-year follow-up period in order to determine the rate at which soft-tissue swelling subsides. The effect of anatomical and non-anatomical reduction by both open and closed methods was compared. The results showed that soft-tissue swelling following external rotation fractures of the lateral malleolus treated by closed methods subsides initially over a 3-month period. Anatomical reduction, whether achieved by open or closed methods, in bi- and trimalleolar fractures results in a rapid resolution of the swelling

BACKGROUND: Many pediatric emergency department (ED) visits do not occur at a standalone pediatric hospital. Although anticipated outcomes after pediatric fracture reductions are published by tertiary children's centers, limited data originate from the more common hybrid (pediatric and adult) ED setting, where general emergency medicine (EM) clinicians perform reductions. This study aims to clarify success rates after pediatric fracture reductions were performed within a regional health network's emergency medicine system, whereafter subsequent in-network pediatric orthopaedic surgeon follow-u

BACKGROUND: Forearm fractures are common skeletal injuries in childhood and can usually be treated nonoperatively with closed reduction and casting. Trends toward increasing operative treatment of these fractures have emerged. We aim to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of cast wedging for treatment of pediatric forearm fractures.
METHODS: We performed a prospective chart review of patients with forearm fractures, including distal radius (DR) fractures, treated with cast wedging at a single large pediatric hospital from June 2011 to September 2012. Inclusion criteria specified open distal r

Displaced lateral humeral condyle (LHC) fractures have routinely been treated with open reduction, which has known postoperative complications. Recent reports show that closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) is a valid treatment. Five pediatric patients with displaced LHC fractures were included in a retrospective case series. Closed reductions (CRs) were facilitated by Kirschner wire placement into the capitellum through a toothed drill guide. The Kirschner wire and drill guide were used like a joystick to manipulate the fragment and maintain reduction for placement of additional Ki

Periprosthetic fractures around total knee arthroplasty have become an increasingly common and challenging orthopaedic problem. Appropriate management of these fractures depends on careful scrutiny of radiographs and a thorough clinical history to exclude the diagnosis of a periprosthetic infection. In a periprosthetic tibial fracture with a stable, well-aligned tibial component and well-aligned mechanical tibial axis, the fracture can be successfully managed with closed reduction and cast immobilization; meticulous follow-up is essential to ensure that the alignment is maintained. Major fract

INTRODUCTION: This paper aims to compare the clinical and radiological results of children operated using elastic stable intramedullary nailing as described by Métaizeau to those with the closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP).
METHODS: Results of 21 pediatric patients with radial neck fracture who were treated by two pediatric surgeons between January 2011 and December 2013 were reviewed retrospectively. 10 were treated with the Métaizeau method versus 11 with the CRPP. Operation time, fluoroscopic exposure time, Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS) and radiological assessment at fi

INTRODUCTION: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) occurring after surgical treatment of femoral neck fractures in children is exceedingly rare. Awareness of this complication is essential because delayed diagnosis may result in progressive deformity and significant morbidity.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 9-year-old female child who sustained a right-sided femoral neck fracture (Delbet Type III) and a left subtrochanteric femoral fracture following a fall from height. She underwent closed reduction and internal fixation of the femoral neck fracture with cannulated cancellous screw

132 injuries of the Lisfranc joint were reviewed in order to show methods of diagnosis and treatment. Injuries of this joint are rare. Almost one third are open fractures and/or dislocations, mostly comminuted lesions, associated with severe soft tissue trauma and so decreasing blood supply of the foot. Most dislocations and fractures can be treated conservatively by closed reductions and following fixation by means of Kirschner wires. In cases of minimal or moderate displacement closed reduction and plaster cast proved to be sufficient. Some cases of severely dislocated fractures or fracture
