APOE Genotype-specific Cognitive Response to Aerobic Exercise in Postmenopausal Women with Breast Cancer.

Cognitive symptoms are common in postmenopausal women treated for breast cancer (BC). In general and in BC, the Apolipoprotein E 4 allele (APOE4) is linked to lower cognition and accelerated cognitive decline, but exercise generally benefits cognition. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the effect of aerobic exercise on cognitive function differs by APOE4 carriage in postmenopausal women with breast cancer. Longitudinal analysis of a 6-month randomized clinical trial of aerobic exercise in postmenopausal women with BC (2016-2022) was done. Subsample with APOE genotype and cogniti

Diabetic foot ulcers as markers of systemic disease burden: Associations with cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes-A case-control cross-sectional study.

BackgroundType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) confers increased risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD), driven by chronic metabo … ive function. Independent neuropsychological tests corroborated slowed processing speed and reduced cognitive flexibility. DFU status was associated with more than a threefold increase in odds of impairment in fluency and visuospatial domains. The DFU participants also demonstrated markedly poorer HRQoL, higher depressive symptoms, and greater comorbidity burden.Conclu …

Neural correlates of cognitive dysfunction in fibromyalgia patients: Reduced brain electrical activity during the execution of a cognitive control task.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a generalized chronic pain syndrome of unknown aetiology. Although FM patients frequently complain of cognitive dysfunction, this is one of the least studied symptoms. Research on brain activity associated with the perceived cognitive impairment is particularly scarce. To address this gap, we recorded the brain electrical activity in participants during a cognitive control task. METHODS: Electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded in 19 FM patients and 22 healthy controls (all women) while they performed the Multi-Source Interference Task (MSIT). We analyzed th

Modifications to cognitive behavioural therapies for depression and anxiety in adults with neurological disorders: A qualitative analysis of intervention protocols.

Cognitive and Behavioural-based Therapies (CBT) can effectively manage symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, adults with neurological disorders (NDs) often face cognitive, physical, and social challenges that make it difficult to engage with traditional forms of these treatments. To address this, CBT protocols have been modified to better suit the needs of this population. This study analysed 41 randomized controlled trials with modified CBT-based protocols for treating symptoms of depression and/or anxiety in adults with a ND. It spanned 10 different NDs : stroke, epilepsy, migraine, P

Regression-Based Normative Data for the Inhibitory Control Test (ICT) and the Switching Test (ST) of the HEllas BAttery of Cognitive Control (HEBACC) in the Greek Adult Population Aged 20-79 Years years old.

The Stroop Color-Word Test and Trail Making Test are widely used neuropsychological measures of executive functioning, assessing cognitive control, attention, processing speed, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility. Although Greek normative data exist, most studies have focused on older adults and have relied on traditional age-stratified methods. Regression-based norms allow more precise demographic adjustment and interpretation across adulthood. This study aimed to develop regression-based normative data for two executive-function measures of the Hellas battery of Cognitive Control: the Inhi…

Psychiatric disorders, personality and neuropsychological alterations in Erdheim-Chester disease.

Although neurological manifestations and changes in brain volumes have been described in Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), it remains unknown whether ECD may be associated with psychiatric symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions. We assessed the presence of psychiatric disorders, changes in temperaments and characters, and neuropsychological performances in 32 ECD patients (mean age = 59) younger than 70, not treated with interferon alpha during the last 6 months, and without other serious illnesses. ECD patients exhibited high level of past depressive disorder (80%) and anxiety disorder, especially

Anxiety Evokes Hypofrontality and Disrupts Rule-Relevant Encoding by Dorsomedial Prefrontal Cortex Neurons.

UNLABELLED: Anxiety is a debilitating symptom of most psychiatric disorders, including major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, and addiction. A detrimental aspect of anxiety is disruption of prefrontal cortex (PFC)-mediated executive functions, such as flexible decision making. Here we sought to understand how anxiety modulates PFC neuronal encoding of flexible shifting between behavioral strategies. We used a clinically substantiated anxiogenic treatment to induce sustained anxiety in rats and recorded from dorsomedial PFC (dmPFC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) neuron

Association of Nonconcussive Repetitive Head Impacts and Intense Physical Activity With Levels of Phosphorylated Tau181 and Total Tau in Plasma of Young Elite Soccer Players.

IMPORTANCE: Head impacts resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI) lead to the elevation of phosphorylated tau protein (p-tau181) in plasma. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate dynamics of p-tau181 levels and the ratio of p-tau181 to total tau in individuals after nonconcussive head impacts. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of repetitive low-intensity head impacts on p-tau181 and total tau protein levels in the plasma of young adult elite soccer players and assess the possible association of head impacts with focused attention and cognitive flexibility. DESIGN, SE…

Set-shifting-related basal ganglia deformation as a novel familial marker of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are suggestive of cognitive rigidity, and previous work identified impaired flexible responding on set-shifting tasks in such patients. The basal ganglia are central to habit learning and are thought to be abnormal in OCD, contributing to inflexible, rigid habitual patterns of behaviour. Here, we demonstrate that increased cognitive inflexibility, indexed by poor performance on the set-shifting task, correlated with putamen morphology, and that patients and their asymptomatic relatives had common curvature abnormalities within this same struc

APOE ε4, the door to insulin-resistant dyslipidemia and brain fog? A case study.

For decades, scientists have known that carriers of the apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE ε4) allele (homozygous/heterozygous) are at respectively higher risk for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although previous research reveals that the APOE ε4 variant impacts the clearance capacity and degradation of β-amyloid from the brain, as compared with APOE ε3 (wild type with normal risk) and APOE ε2 (variant with accelerated clearance and reduced risk), little has been documented about APOE ε4's dual role in cholesterol transport, both peripheral and cerebral, and the effects of sluggish APOE ε4 choles

The dynamic characteristics of the anterior cingulate cortex in resting-state fMRI of patients with depression.

BACKGROUND: The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is part of the limbic system of the brain. It is a bridge between attentional and emotional processing, which is responsible for the integration of visceral, attentional, and affective information. Lesioning of the ACC, which produces striking changes, is used to treat major depression disorder (MDD). Moreover, the brain dynamically integrates and coordinates functions of its different subparts to realize its cognitive capability. Hence, the spatio-temporal community distribution of the ACC is necessary to completely understand MDD. METHODS: Fir

Cognitive ethology of nest building in a shell-dwelling cichlid.

Across animal taxa, nest-building behavior is performed using a generalizable and flexible action sequence. In order to accomplish its goal (a stable nest), the brain appears to compare intermediate steps in the process to stored neural representations that are reminiscent of cognitive templates. Deviations from these templates drive progress, preferences, and corrections in the execution of this behavior. Here, we investigated the stereotypy vs. plasticity of nest building by the cichlid Lamprologus ocellatus, a fish species that manipulates abandoned snail shells to build shelters for breedi
