Parainfluenza virus 5-vectored vaccines against human and animal infectious diseases.

Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5), known as canine parainfluenza virus in the veterinary field, is a negative-sense, nonsegmented, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family. Parainfluenza virus 5 is an excellent viral vector and has been used as a live vaccine for kennel cough for many years in dogs without any safety concern. It can grow to high titers in many cell types, and its genome is stable even in the presence of foreign gene insertions. So far, PIV5 has been used to develop vaccines against influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, rabies virus, and Mycobacteriu

[Centenary of the Health Council of the Netherlands. IV. Infectious diseases].

Many advisory reports of the Health Council of the Netherlands in the past century have dealt, directly or indirectly, with infectious diseases. One example is vaccination against smallpox. At the start of the last century, advice on this subject was important: initially, vaccination was compulsory by law, but people became increasingly aware of the associated side effects. A second example is immunisation against acute anterior poliomyelitis, which became a reality during the fifties. The advice also contained a discussion of which vaccine should be chosen: the inactivated 'dead' (Salk) form

Health aspects of resettlement in Ethiopia.

The literature on health implications and effects of government-sponsored resettlement in Ethiopia is reviewed with the objective of providing an initial evaluation of the health status of settlers and the health hazards of resettlement in western Ethiopia. Emphasis is on the 1984/85 resettlement program, which resulted in the movement of about 600,000 drought victims from northern and central Ethiopia to the western part of the country. Malaria, trypanosomiasis, onchocerciasis, yellow fever, nonfilarial elephantiasis, sand-flea infestation, and psychological stress are identified as immediate

Optimal control strategies for preventing hepatitis B infection and reducing chronic liver cirrhosis incidence.

Advanced liver cirrhosis has become life-threatening among non-communicable diseases nowadays. Cirrhosis, the terminal stage of liver diseases in which the liver develops scarring as a result of various long-term continuous damages. Among liver diseases, viral hepatitis is the major risk factor for chronic cirrhosis development. The present paper demonstrates a compartmental model of chronic disease liver cirrhosis describing the transmission dynamics of this disease. Applying the Pontryagin's maximum principle, the optimal control policies such as vaccination for hepatitis B virus and treatme

Pathophysiology, development, and mortality of major non-communicable diseases in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: A comprehensive review.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease, has emerged as a critical contributor to the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Beyond its hepatic manifestations, MASLD is pathophysiologically connected to broader metabolic dysfunction, including insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular complications. This review critically examines the bidirectional associations between MASLD and major NCDs, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovasc

Emerging chronic non-communicable diseases in rural communities of Northern Ethiopia: evidence using population-based verbal autopsy method in Kilite Awlaelo surveillance site.

INTRODUCTION: In countries where most deaths are outside health institutions and medical certification of death is absent, verbal autopsy (VA) method is used to estimate population level causes of death. METHODS: VA data were collected by trained lay interviewers for 409 deaths in the surveillance site. Two physicians independently assigned cause of death using the International Classification of Diseases manual. RESULTS: In general, infectious and parasitic diseases accounted for 35.9% of death, external causes 15.9%, diseases of the circulatory system 13.4% and perinatal causes 12.5% of to

Cutaneous leishmaniasis situation analysis in the Islamic Republic of Iran in preparation for an elimination plan.

Iran has invariably been under the growing public health threat of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a significant barrier to local development that hinders the prevention and control efforts toward eliminating the disease. So far, no comprehensive and in-depth epidemiological analysis of the CL situation has been carried out nationwide. This study aimed to employ advanced statistical models to analyze the data collected through the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention of Communicable Diseases during 1989-2020. However, we emphasized the current trends, 2013-2020, to study temporal and spati

[Noroviruses, these unknown worldwide epidemic enteropathogens].

Discovered in the 1970s, human noroviruses (NoV) are the leading cause of foodborne disease and gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. NoV affect people of all ages. In children less than 5 years old, despite rotavirus remains the main enteropathogen responsible for viral gastroenteritis, NoV become the first etiological virus in countries where the rotavirus vaccine was introduced. Treatment of viral gastroenteritis is symptomatic. The key element in front of NoV infection is limiting their transmission. A rapid NoV detection during outbreak is important in the aim to rapidly implement hygiene

Sports: The Infectious Hazards.

Although the medical complications of sports are usually traumatic in nature, infectious hazards also arise. While blood-borne pathogens such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, cause significant illness, the risk of acquiring these agents during sporting activities is minimal. Skin infections are more commonplace, arising from a variety of microbial agents including bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens. Sports involving water contact can lead to enteric infections, eye infections, or disseminated infections such as leptospirosis. Mumps, measles, and influenza are vaccine-preventable disea

Towards the endgame and beyond: complexities and challenges for the elimination of infectious diseases.

Successful control measures have interrupted the local transmission of human infectious diseases such as measles, malaria and polio, and saved and improved billions of lives. Similarly, control efforts have massively reduced the incidence of many infectious diseases of animals, such as rabies and rinderpest, with positive benefits for human health and livelihoods across the globe. However, disease elimination has proven an elusive goal, with only one human and one animal pathogen globally eradicated. As elimination targets expand to regional and even global levels, hurdles may emerge within th

Outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease in schools and nurseries in England and Wales 1992 to 1994.

We present data on outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease in schools and nurseries obtained from the surveillance scheme of all general outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease in England and Wales reported to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre between 1992 and 1994. A minimum set of data was received for 1280 outbreaks, 95 of which (7%) arose in schools and nurseries. The commonest pathogens were salmonellas, Shigella sonnei, and small round structured viruses. The mode of transmission was described as mainly from person to person in 55 outbreaks and mainly foodborne in 3

Reaching the limits of tuberculosis prevention among foreign-born individuals: a tuberculosis-control program perspective.

Analysis of whether assiduous implementation of American Thoracic Society/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Infectious Diseases Society of America guidelines for targeted testing and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection could have prevented any of 223 cases of active tuberculosis in foreign-born persons in San Francisco during the period 2002-2003. We report that 62% of these cases were not preventable and conclude that a further reduction in the incidence of tuberculosis among foreign-born persons will be modest without modification of current guidelines.

Burden of Six Healthcare-Associated Infections on European Population Health: Estimating Incidence-Based Disability-Adjusted Life Years through a Population Prevalence-Based Modelling Study.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the burden of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) compared to other communicable diseases is an ongoing challenge given the need for good quality data on the incidence of these infections and the involved comorbidities. Based on the methodology of the Burden of Communicable Diseases in Europe (BCoDE) project and 2011-2012 data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) point prevalence survey (PPS) of HAIs and antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals, we estimated the burden of six common HAIs. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The included HAI

Epidemiological investigation of a case of chickenpox in a medical college in Kancheepuram, India.

Chickenpox is an acute, highly infectious disease caused by human herpesvirus 3. The disease is highly communicable with a secondary attack rate of almost 90%. Secondary cases can occur due to their exposure to the primary case. The main aim of the current epidemiological investigation was to trace the probable source of infection and prevent the emergence of secondary cases. The epidemiological investigation showed that the index case was the primary case as well and that there were no secondary cases because of the immediate isolation of the primary case. This epidemiological investigation r

Effect of a community-based intervention for cardiovascular risk factor control on stroke mortality in rural Gadchiroli, India: study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke has emerged as a leading cause of death in rural India. However, well-tested healthcare interventions to reduce stroke mortality in rural under-resourced settings are lacking. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a community-based preventive intervention on stroke mortality in rural Gadchiroli, India. METHODS: The study is a two-arm, parallel group, cluster randomised controlled trial in which 32 villages will be randomised to the intervention and the enhanced usual care (EUC) arm. In the intervention arm, individuals ≥50 years of age will be screened for hype
