OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences and perceptions of health and healthcare of clients of a co-designed, community-based service for people with frequent hospital admissions.
DESIGN: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews guided by a schedule that covered each participant's experience and perception of their health and healthcare and experience of receiving care from the service; what is important to them when receiving care; and what, if any, effect being a client of the service had on their health and well-being. Interviews took place in participants' homes, were audio-re

Population ageing is an emerging public health priority that extends beyond medical care to include social inclusion, caregiving and community participation, particularly in rural settings. India is undergoing a rapid demographic transition, with a growing elderly population facing challenges related to social isolation, declining family support and limited access to age-friendly services. In response, the Enhancing Living Experiences of the Elderly initiative was implemented across 100 villages in the rural Wardha district to promote healthy, active and dignified ageing through self-care and

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccine was launched in India on January 16, 2021. There is a paucity of robust evidence from qualitative studies on the acceptability and expectations of potential recipients from the COVID-19 vaccine around the time of its rollout in India. We conducted this study to explore the acceptance and expectations of the COVID-19 vaccine among the healthcare workers and community in Bhavnagar, India.
METHODS: During January 2021, in-depth interviews were conducted with potential vaccine recipients in Bhavnagar city-health care workers, people over the age of 50, and people of a

Understanding the dynamic nature of sex work is important for explaining the course of HIV epidemics. While health and development interventions targeting sex workers may alter the dynamics of the sex trade in particular localities, little has been done to explore how large-scale social and structural changes, such as economic recessions-outside of the bounds of organizational intervention-may reconfigure social norms and attitudes with regards to sex work. Zimbabwe's economic collapse in 2009, following a period (2000-2009) of economic decline, within a declining HIV epidemic, provides a uniq

Educational efforts targeting parents of preadolescents may help them make informed decisions about having their children vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV). We conducted a pilot study examining knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of community-based health educators and counselors who routinely disseminate sexual health and prevention information through counseling and supporting these parents. We evaluated the impact of a single, brief workshop by administering questionnaires before and after the session. The workshop consisted of an educational intervention that was presented or

BACKGROUND: Mass drug administration is one of the key interventions recommended by WHO to control certain NTDs. With most support from donors, health workers distribute antihelminthic drugs annually in Malawi. Mean community coverage of MDA from 2018 to 2020 was high at 87% for praziquantel and 82% for albendazole. However, once donor support diminishes sustaining these levels will be challenging. This study intended to compare the use of the community-directed intervention approach with the standard practice of using health workers in delivery of MDA campaigns.
METHODS: This was a controlle

Hepatitis B immunization for health care workers is common policy in many countries where they constitute a particular at risk group. A seroepidemiological study of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Fiji health care workers was conducted to determine whether this occupational group (or subgroups thereof) were at higher risk of infection than the general Fiji population. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether health staff should be immunized, or whether it would be more productive to focus resources on neonatal immunization. Blood samples were obtained from 2,639 health workers and the ser

COVID-19 saw a rapid shift in how community-based peer support programs were delivered. HIV peer support workers were required to work from home and community-based HIV and LGBTQ + organisations moved their support programs to digital platforms. Between May and September 2020, semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals who worked (n = 17) or volunteered (n = 4) for community-based HIV and/or LGBTQ + health organisations. Interviews explored the impact of moving to digital service delivery on how peer support programs were delivered and the impact on peer support workers. We ide

INTRODUCTION: Childhood immunization is among the most cost-effective public health strategies available, yet dropout rates, the proportion of infants who begin but fail to complete the recommended vaccination schedule, remain a persistent obstacle to achieving high and equitable coverage. Global third-dose pentavalent coverage stood at 86% in 2019, declined to 84% in 2020, and fell further to 82% in 2021, consistently falling short of the 85% minimum target. This shortfall is especially pronounced in fragile health systems such as that of South Sudan, where facility-level and community-level

BACKGROUND: Globally, substance use is a leading contributor to the burden of disease among young people, with far reaching social, economic and health effects. Following a finding of harmful alcohol use among 5-8-year-old children in Mbale District, Uganda, this study aims to investigate community members' views on early childhood substance use among children below the age of 10 years.
METHODS: In 2016, we conducted eight focus group discussions with 48 parents and 26 key informant interviews with teachers, health workers, alcohol distributors, traditional healers, religious leaders, communi

BACKGROUND: The rapid increase of the aging population is pushing many national governments to reshape retirement legislation in order to extend older adults' working life. Once retired, older adults can be invaluable resources for the community as family carers, as volunteers, or by returning to work. Healthy aging is one of the main conditions for being able to work longer and being active after retirement. The latter, indeed, represents a very sensitive life transition, which can entail psychological and social difficulties. Interventions for promoting older workers' health and well-being a

BACKGROUND: Latino immigrants are less likely to be involved in addressing health-related issues affecting their own community. Community health workers have played a significant role in addressing the health of underserved communities in several countries.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to describe the development, implementation and evaluation of a community-based training program that empowers promotores to identify the health needs of recent Latino immigrants. Promotores were able to develop interventions based on the needs of recent Latino immigrants.

Latin American immigrants in new immigrant destinations (NIDs) experience numerous barriers that negatively impact their access to healthcare. Yet the wide range of health-seeking behaviors deployed in response to these barriers-particularly among those who are undocumented and indigenous-are not well understood. Further, studies of immigrant health in NIDs tend to take place in those locations, rather than using a multi-sited design. Building on NID scholarship, the transnational social protection literature, and work on structural vulnerability, this study uses a multi-sited research design

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), known as a nosocomial pathogen, has been isolated from community-acquired infections since the 1980s. It has been reported that there are carriers of MRSA in the community although the rate of carriers is low and the most important risk factor of community-acquired carriage is hospitalization or referral to healthcare facilities. We attempted to investigate methicillin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus colonization, respectively, in nasal and axillary swabs obtained from 500 patients without a history of hospitalization who were

Postpartum common mental disorders are prevalent among women in Ethiopia. Data on associated factors are limited. This population-based study assessed mental health among 1294 nonpregnant, postpartum women in Amhara region. Poor health of the last delivered child and inequitable gender attitudes were associated with poor mental health among other factors. Social support from female friends was strongly protective. Community mental health services could strengthen social support between female friends with education and support group facilitation by health extension workers.

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization recommends that children aged 2-59 months, with chest indrawing pneumonia, are treated with a five-day course of oral amoxicillin initiated at a health facility. We synthesised the evidence on the effectiveness and safety of community-level health care workers (CLHW)-led management compared to standard care at a hospital or health facility among children aged 2-59 months with chest indrawing pneumonia in terms of clinical outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search in PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central for studies published from January 2000
