Evaluation of the impact of 2 years of a dosing intervention on canine echinococcosis in the Alay Valley, Kyrgyzstan.

Echinococcosis is a re-emerging zoonotic disease in Kyrgyzstan. In 2012, an echinococcosis control scheme was started that included dosing owned dogs in the Alay Valley, Kyrgyzstan with praziquantel. Control programmes require large investments of money and resources; as such it is important to evaluate how well these are meeting their targets. However, problems associated with echinococcosis control schemes include remoteness and semi-nomadic customs of affected communities, and lack of resources. These same problems apply to control scheme evaluations, and quick and easy assessment tools are

Management of adenolymphangitis and lymphoedema due to lymphatic filariasis in resource-limited North-eastern Nigeria.

Procedures for health facility-based management of lymphoedema and adenolymphangitis (ADL) have proved very effective in some countries. Unfortunately, in resource-poor communities of Africa where health facilities are few, overburdened and inaccessible, an alternative approach is required. Community-based care (CC), patient care (PC) and health facility care (HC) approaches were compared. In the CC arm, communities were required to select one of their members for care-giving to its affected members, while in the PC, participants were allocated to groups under a leader with responsibility for

Gender-Based Violence and Armed Conflict: A Community-Informed Socioecological Conceptual Model From Northeastern Uganda.

The high prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) in armed conflict has been documented in various national contexts, but less is known about the complex pathways that constitute the relation between the two. Employing a community-based collaborative approach, we constructed a community-informed socioecological conceptual model from a feminist perspective, detailing how armed conflict relates to GBV in a conflict-affected rural community in Northeastern Uganda. The research questions were as follows: (1) How does the community conceptualize GBV? and (2) How does armed conflict relate to GBV?

Adapting and implementing an evidence-based sun-safety education program in rural Idaho, 2012.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma incidence and mortality rates in Idaho are higher than national averages. The importance of increased awareness of skin cancer has been cited by state and local organizations. St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute (MSTI) prioritized educational outreach efforts to focus on the implementation of a skin cancer prevention program in rural Idaho. COMMUNITY CONTEXT: As a community cancer center, MSTI expanded cancer education services to include dedicated support to rural communities. Through this expansion, an MSTI educator sought to partner with a community organization

A mixed-methods study of community dog management and rabies awareness in Thailand.

Rabies elimination requires coordinated interventions across the human-animal-environment interface, yet sustained progress is often hindered by systemic gaps between dog population management, community engagement, and governance. This study investigated community perceptions and challenges related to rabies prevention and control across high-endemic areas in Thailand. Using a mixed-methods design, secondary provincial quantitative data were integrated with qualitative thematic analysis from 57 stakeholders in high endemic areas, including public health officials, policymakers, NGOs, animal-w

Partnering with Communities to Improve Diabetic Foot Ulcer Care in High-Risk Populations.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain one of the most devastating complications of diabetes, accounting for over 80% of nontraumatic amputations and contributing to a 5-year mortality rate exceeding 30%. Despite significant clinical advances, profound disparities persist. Racial and ethnic minoritized populations, rural communities, and people with low socioeconomic resources experience disproportionate rates of severe ulceration, infection, delayed healing, and amputation. PROBLEM: Traditional research approaches, often developed in academic settings without community input, have in

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community governance of health research: Turning principles into practice.

PROBLEM: Gaps exist in researchers' understanding of the 'practice' of community governance in relation to research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. DESIGN: We examine Aboriginal community governance of two rural NSW research projects by applying principles-based criteria from two independent sources. SETTING: One research project possessed a strong Aboriginal community governance structure and evaluated a 2-year healthy lifestyle program for children; the other was a 5-year cohort study examining factors influencing the mental health and well-being of participants. KEY M

Bridging the gaps: An early integrated support collaborative for at risk mothers in rural Maine.

BACKGROUND: The antecedents that contribute to health disparities in maternal child health populations begin before birth and extend into the early prenatal and gestational growth periods. Mothers and infants living in rural poverty in particular are at considerable risk for problems associated with reproductive health, including pregnancy complications and premature births. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this manuscript is thus two-fold, to describe the epidemiologic makeup of the community and the intervention model of the Community Caring Collaborative. METHODS: Innovative models of early-integrat

Perspectives of primary care and community clinicians on chronic breathlessness management.

BACKGROUND: Chronic breathlessness is a prevalent and debilitating symptom affecting people with chronic respiratory disease. However, community management of chronic breathlessness is limited. Further research is needed to determine how breathlessness care can best be delivered in primary care, identify knowledge and training gaps, and determine what resources might support such a model. This study explored the perspectives of Australian primary and community care clinicians regarding the management of chronic breathlessness, including barriers and facilitators to symptom-directed care. Building the blueprint: Formulating a community-generated national plan for future research in inherited bleeding disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Decades of inherited bleeding disorders (BD) research transformed severe haemophilia from a childhood killer to a disorder managed across a full lifespan for many in economically developed countries. Health equity, a life unimpaired by disease complications, however, remains unimaginable for most people with an inherited BD (PWIBD). AIM: The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN) undertook the development of a community-driven United States (US) National Blueprint for Inherited Bleeding Disorders Research to transform the exper

"In our community, a friend is a psychologist": An ethnographic study of informal care in two Bhutanese refugee communities.

The recent rise in suicide among Bhutanese refugees has been linked to the erosion of social networks and community supports in the ongoing resettlement process. This paper presents ethnographic findings on the role of informal care practiced by relatives, friends, and neighbors in the prevention and alleviation of mental distress in two Bhutanese refugee communities: the refugee camps of eastern Nepal and the resettled community of Burlington, Vermont, US. Data gathered through interviews ( n = 40, camp community; n = 22, resettled community), focus groups (four, camp community), and particip

Community engagement and population coverage in mass anti-malarial administrations: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mass anti-malarial administration has been proposed as a key component of the malaria elimination strategy in South East Asia. The success of this approach depends on the local malaria epidemiology, nature of the anti-malarial regimen and population coverage. Community engagement is used to promote population coverage but little research has systematically analysed its impact. This systematic review examines population coverage and community engagement in programmes of mass anti-malarial drug administration. METHODS: This review builds on a previous review that identified 3049 art

Predicting measles elimination through surveillance-response and health system determinants: a village-level structural equation modeling study in Cirebon Regency, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: Measles elimination remains a major public health challenge despite the widespread availability of effective vaccines. Rising outbreaks in some countries suggest that high immunization coverage alone may not be enough to stop transmission. However, evidence remains limited regarding how surveillance-response, health system capacity, nutritional status, and community vulnerability interact to influence measles elimination within a single epidemiological framework. This study aimed to develop and validate an integrated epidemiological prediction model for measles elimination using st

Primary care clinical provider knowledge and experiences in the diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne illness: a qualitative assessment from a Lyme disease endemic community.

BACKGROUND: Primary care and frontline healthcare providers are often the first point of contact for patients experiencing tick-borne disease (TBD) but face challenges when recognizing and diagnosing these diseases. The specific aim of this study was to gain a qualitative understanding of frontline and primary care providers' knowledge and practices for identifying TBDs in patients. METHODS: From fall 2018 to spring 2019, three focus groups were conducted with primary care providers practicing in a small-town community endemic to Lyme disease (LD) and with emerging incidence of additional TBD

Represent: A community engagement roadmap to improve participant representation in cancer early detection research: An Oregon case study.

INTRODUCTION: While authentic and sustained community involvement in the research process is critically important to making new technologies and interventions effective and socially acceptable, there is uneven participation across sociodemographic, racial, and ethnic communities in many research areas, including cancer early detection research. Currently, 18% of cancer in the United States impacts Hispanics and Latinos, this population accounts for < 10% of research participants. Understanding barriers and facilitators to cancer early detection research is imperative to the ultimate success of

Occupational Justice PLUS: From theoretical salience to practical application-An analysis of community narratives from a bushfire event.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging scholarship highlights the dominance of Western epistemologies in disaster research, limiting diversity and participation in knowledge production. The occupational therapy profession faces similar critiques of epistemic and hegemonic blind spots, prompting calls for critical reflection on professional assumptions. Drawing on narratives and guided by Whiteford's Occupational Justice PLUS model, we explore how learnings from community members' responses to a bushfire event could broaden our understanding of occupational, epistemic, and hermeneutic justice in the context of

Co-designing inclusive community involvement in research: reflections on the I Am More Than… project with people experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: There is a pressing need for more inclusive research practices, as recognised by researchers, funding bodies and community organisations. It is increasingly acknowledged that research should actively involve a more diverse range of voices, such as individuals experiencing homelessness or vulnerable housing. Despite their valuable insights, they are often excluded due to systemic barriers, such as lack of opportunity or confidence to participate, limited access to resources and inflexible research structures. As a result, their perspectives are frequently missing from studies that s
