Pericarditis with effusion can occur as a complication of disseminated coccidioidomycosis. Information on management of this condition is very scanty in the medical literature. One case is described in detail. Early diagnosis and appropriate therapy with amphotericin B have been emphasized as keys to success in treating this condition.

A method of immunization against anaplasmosis and babesiosis using minimum infective doses was developed under laboratory conditions. Stabilates of Anaplasma marginale stored at -60 degrees C were found infective when diluted 10-fold to 10(-3). Stabilates of Babesia argentina and Babesia bigemina stored under the same conditions were infective when diluted 10-fold to 10(-1). Intact calves inoculated with the above dilutions of stabilates developed moderate parasitemias and recovered from infection without treatment. There was an immune response to vaccination with the formation of specific ant

A 23-year-old patient developed acute upper abdominal symptoms during in-patient treatment for vulvo-vaginitis. Clinical picture, scintigraphy and angiography suggested a space-occupying process of the liver. Laparotomy showed ascites and a congested liver covered with cell necroses. The patient died the day after the operation from circulatory failure. Virological investigations of liver and spleen cell suspensions as well as the ascites fluid led to the demonstration of herpes virus type 2. The complement binding reaction gave a titre of 1:20 to herpes simplex virus. Disseminated herpes simp

The sequence of events leading to the diagnosis of recent outbreaks of hamster-borne lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) in New York State is briefly reviewed. Some relevant experiments on persistent LCM infection of hamsters are described, including measurements of complement levels in the affected animals. Evidence is discussed which suggests that complement has an important role in eliminating free virus in the circulation by participating in virus neutralization.
