Evaluation of a sexual education intervention among Swedish high school students.

AIMS: To evaluate an intervention aimed at improving knowledge of, attitudes to, and practices regarding condoms and emergency contraception (ECP) among Swedish high school students. METHODS: An intervention study with quasi-experimental design. A strategic sample of classes from two vocational high school programs was divided into an intervention group and a comparison group. All students completed questionnaires before and after the intervention, which included sexual education lessons by a nurse-midwife and medical students, free condoms on request and access to telephone counseling. RESU…

Gender differences in HIV-related sexual risk behavior among urban African American youth: a multivariate approach.

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use during sexual encounters, sexual partner's age, perceived HIV risk and perceived condom effectiveness were studied among 388 sexually active African American youth. Cluster analysis of condom use, number of partners, and frequency of sexual intercourse identified four groups: low risk, monogamy strategy, condom strategy, and high risk. Low-risk youth used condoms consistently and had few partners. High-risk youth used condoms inconsistently with many partners. Monogamy strategy youth used condoms inconsistently but had few partners. Condom strategy youth used c…

"If I don't use a condom … I would be stressed in my heart that I've done something wrong": Routine Prevention Messages Preclude Safer Conception Counseling for HIV-Infected Men and Women in South Africa.

Intended conception likely contributes to a significant proportion of new HIV infections in South Africa. Safer conception strategies require healthcare provider-client communication about fertility intentions, periconception risks, and options to modify those risks. We conducted in-depth interviews with 35 HIV-infected men and women accessing care in South Africa to explore barriers and promoters to patient-provider communication around fertility desires and intentions. Few participants had discussed personal fertility goals with providers. Discussions about pregnancy focused on maternal and

Alcohol, drugs, and adolescent sexual behavior.

In a 1990 Massachusetts-wide random digit-dial telephone survey of 16-19 year olds, 66% reported sexual intercourse of whom 64% had sex after drinking and 15% after other drug use. Thirty-seven percent always used condoms. Forty-nine percent were more likely to have sex if they and their partner had been drinking, and 17% used condoms less often after drinking. Fewer, 32%, said they would be more likely to have sex if they and their partner had used drugs, with 10% less likely to use condoms after drug use. Since so few adolescents consistently use condoms, the greatest risk for HIV, sexually …

HIV risk reduction for substance using seriously mentally ill adults: test of the information-motivation-behavior skills (IMB) model.

The information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model (Fisher & Fisher, 1992) was used as the theoretical framework for predicting unprot … m norms, less perceived susceptibility, and greater condom self-efficacy. Positive attitudes toward condoms had a significant indirect effect on rates of unprotected sex, exerting its influence through condom use self-efficacy. Results suggest that changing personal attitudes about condoms and reinforcing pro-condom attitudes among significant others will …

A community-level HIV prevention intervention for inner-city women: results of the women and infants demonstration projects.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of a multisite community-level HIV prevention intervention on women's condom-use behaviors. METHODS: The theory-based behavioral intervention was implemented with low-income, primarily African American women in 4 urban communities. It was evaluated with data from pre- and postintervention cross-sectional surveys in matched intervention and comparison communities. RESULTS: At baseline, 68% of the women had no intention of using condoms with their main partners and 70% were not using condoms consistently with other partners. After 2 years of interven…

Hormonal contraception and HIV: the methods have confused the message.

OBJECTIVE: To examine different scenarios through which confounding by condom use may lead to inaccurate conclusions about the effect of hormonal contraception on HIV acquisition in women. DESIGN AND METHODS: Scenario analyses were conducted to evaluate the impact of coarse adjustment for condom use and condom misreporting on adjusted relative risk estimates for HIV acquisition in injectable hormonal contraception (IHC) users vs. nonusers. RESULTS: Analyses crudely accounting for condom use through a binary variable result in biased hormonal contraception-related risk estimates if condoms ar…

Protecting against both pregnancy and disease: predictors of dual method use among a sample of women.

Although male condoms are the best form of protection against HIV/STDs, they are not the most effective method for preventing unintended pregnancy. Consequently, use of condoms and a highly effective contraceptive-referred to as dual use-is recommended as the optimal protection against both disease and pregnancy. However, little is known about the factors that promote dual use. This study examined associations of dual method use with women's background characteristics, intrapersonal factors, and relationship characteristics. Data are from a random sample of women selected from a large managed …

State-of-the-art of non-hormonal methods of contraception: I. Mechanical barrier contraception.

Mechanical barriers, specifically male condoms, command renewed interest and are used today by more people. The worldwide prevalence rate of male condoms was about 6% in 2007 corresponding to 65 million cohabiting couples. The prevalence of female barrier methods, including diaphragms, cervical caps and female condoms has declined to less than 1% of women in North America and in north-west Europe. Even smaller percentages use female barriers elsewhere. First-year life table pregnancy probabilities of mechanical barrier methods range from 4 to 19 per hundred in clinical trials. The male condom …

Acceptability of an existing, female-controlled contraceptive method that could potentially protect against HIV: a comparison of diaphragm users and other method users.

OBJECTIVE: The diaphragm, an internal barrier contraceptive device, is a candidate for a female-controlled method for preventing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study's objective was to examine how women who use the diaphragm differ from women using the pill and/or condoms with respect to factors hypothesized to influence the acceptability of contraceptive methods. Our goal was to increase understanding of who finds the diaphragm acceptable and why. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey with selected female members o…

"When you get old like this … you don't run those risks anymore": influence of age on sexual risk behaviors and condom use attitudes among methamphetamine-using heterosexual women with a history of partner violence.

BACKGROUND: Drug use and partner violence affect older women, yet few studies highlight age-specific HIV risks and prevention strategies. This study compares sexual risk behaviors, condom use attitudes, and HIV knowledge between midlife/older women (ages 45+) and younger women (ages 18-44) reporting methamphetamine use and partner violence in San Diego, California. METHODS: Our mixed methods study used themes from a qualitative substudy (n = 18) to inform logistic regression analysis of baseline data from an HIV behavioral intervention trial (n = 154). FINDINGS: Age-related qualitative theme

Consistent condom use with regular, paying, and casual male partners and associated factors among men who have sex with men in Tamil Nadu, India: findings from an assessment of a large-scale HIV prevention program.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a marginalized population at high risk for HIV infection. Promoting consistent condom use (CCU) during anal sex is a key risk reduction strategy for HIV prevention among MSM. To inform effective HIV prevention interventions, we examined the factors associated with CCU among MSM with their regular, paying, and casual partners, as well as with all three types of partners combined. METHODS: Data for this analysis were from a large-scale bio-behavioural survey conducted during 2009-2010 in Tamil Nadu, India. MSM aged 18 years or older were recruited

HIV-infected women and sexual risk reduction: the relevance of existing models of behavior change.

This article utilizes constructs of the AIDS Risk Reduction Model (ARRM) to examine condom use in a sample of 215 HIV-infected women in New Jersey. We find evidence that processes affecting condom use in HIV-infected individuals are similar to those found in HIV-negative individuals. Results suggest that partner-related factors are important to consistent condom use in HIV-infected women. Women are more likely to use condoms consistently if they have high perceived power to influence their partner's condom use, have partners who are HIV seronegative, and have partners who do not want more chil…
