Mapping cortical and subcortical asymmetries in substance dependence: Findings from the ENIGMA Addiction Working Group.

Brain asymmetry reflects left-right hemispheric differentiation, which is a quantitative brain phenotype that develops with age and can vary with psychiatric diagnoses. Previous studies have shown that substance dependence is associated with altered brain structure and function. However, it is unknown whether structural brain asymmetries are different in individuals with substance dependence compared with nondependent participants. Here, a mega-analysis was performed using a collection of 22 structural brain MRI datasets from the ENIGMA Addiction Working Group. Structural asymmetries of cortic

Disclosure of sexual orientation and subsequent substance use and abuse among lesbian, gay, and bisexual youths: critical role of disclosure reactions.

Research on whether disclosure of sexual orientation promotes lower substance use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals has been inconsistent. One reason for this may be that disclosure results in accepting and rejecting reactions. The current report longitudinally examines whether the types of reactions to disclosure are associated with substance use and abuse among 156 LGB youths (ages 14-21). Neither the number of disclosures nor the numbers of accepting or neutral disclosure reactions were associated with substance use or abuse. However, the number of rejecting reactions to di

Adenosine receptor link in an adrenal opioid-induced antinociception in the rat tail-flick test.

Intrathecal administration of substance P at the lower thoracic spinal level has an antinociceptive effect on reaction time in the tail-flick test; this response is blocked by naloxone i.v. but not by i.v. administration of opiate antagonists which do not cross the blood-brain barrier. As morphine-induced analgesia is blocked by adenosine antagonists, to determine whether this substance P-induced, opioid-mediated antinociception also includes a purine link, the adenosine receptor antagonist, caffeine, was given systemically 10 min prior to substance P administration. In control rats pretreated

Ventilatory effects of substance P, vasoactive intestinal peptide, and nitroprusside in humans.

Animal studies suggest that the neuropeptides, substance P and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), may influence carotid body chemoreceptor activity and that substance P may take part in the carotid body response to hypoxia. The effects of these peptides on resting ventilation and on ventilatory responses to hypoxia and to hypercapnia have been investigated in six normal humans. Infusions of substance P (1 pmol.kg-1.min-1) and of VIP (6 pmol.kg-1.min-1) were compared with placebo and with nitroprusside (5 micrograms.kg-1.min-1) as a control for the hypotensive action of the peptides. Both pep

Peer victimization and associated alcohol and substance use: Prospective pathways for negative outcomes.

A considerable number of studies have documented associations between peer victimization and concurrent and prospective increase in alcohol and substance use. Only a handful have investigated the psychological (e.g., internalizing behavior) and biological (e.g., neural systems) factors that contribute to this relation. Emerging studies provide clues as to mechanisms that may underlie increased risk for alcohol and substance use and associated problems in peer victimized youth, which may serve as potential targets for intervention. This review proposes a conceptual framework of increased alcoho

Engagement with LGBTQ community moderates the association between victimization and substance use among a cohort of sexual and gender minority individuals assigned female at birth.

BACKGROUND: Research has documented higher levels of substance use among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals - particularly sexual minority women (SMW) and transgender people - than among their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Because SGM substance use is linked to stigma-based victimization, it is crucial to identify social contexts that may buffer the association between victimization and substance use among SGM. METHODS: We explored how engagement with LGBTQ-specific community influences victimization experiences and substance use among 488 SGM individuals assigned female at birt

Modeling Body-Mind-Spirit Well-Being and the Possibility of Relapse Intention in Adults Who Have a History of Substance Use in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is a global mental health issue. There has been limited research exploring the relationships among body, mind, and … n December 2015 and June 2016. Data were collected from 467 participants who had a history of using controlled substances. RESULTS: Path analysis results revealed that body-mind-spirit well-being was negatively predictive of the possibility of relapse intention. Out of several predictors, stress influence and duration of substance use had direct effects on body-mind-sp …

How is substance use linked to psychosis? A study of the course and patterns of substance dependence in psychosis.

Substance use in mentally ill patients is now a major problem that influences the course and outcome of psychosis. With prevalence ranging up to 60%, several theories were postulated to explain the link. It would be interesting to know if substances have different effects in persons with psychosis than in those without. This study aimed to explore patterns of symptomatology of dependence and comorbid psychiatric illness by comparing and contrasting it with a group suffering from pure substance dependence. Consecutively admitted patients who were matched for age, sex, and tobacco use were divid

The Relationship Between Early Maladaptive Schemas, Depression, and Generalized Anxiety among Adults Seeking Residential Treatment for Substance Use Disorders.

Previous research has shown that early maladaptive schemas (EMS) play an important role in substance use, depression, and anxiety. However, few studies have examined the role of EMS within the context of all three concurrently. The goal of this study was to determine the role of EMS in predicting symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) among adults in residential treatment for substance dependence. We used pre-existing patient records of adults diagnosed with a substance use disorder from a residential substance use treatment facility (N=122). The EMS

Parents' perceptions of substance use prevention programs for adolescents in private schools in Chile: a qualitative study.

Engaging parents in substance and alcohol use prevention programs could play a key role in delaying the onset of use among adolescents. This research analyzes parents' perceptions of substance use prevention programs (tobacco, marijuana, vaping, and alcohol) implemented in private schools in the northern area of Santiago, Chile. Using a qualitative design, we conducted 15 semi-structured interviews with parents of adolescents attending four private schools. Our findings reveal limited parental knowledge and understanding of the risks of adolescent substance use and prevention or harm reduction

Management of Alcohol and Tobacco Use Disorders in a 39-Year-Old Hispanic Male With a Complex Medical Background: A Case Report.

Substance use disorders affect the mental activities of an individual's brain and behavior, leading to a loss of control over their substance use, such as drugs, alcohol, and medication. However, these disorders are treatable. This case report presents and discusses the management of a 39-year-old Hispanic male with a complex medical background and a history of substance use. The patient, who resided with his mother in the Bronx, was admitted to the Outpatient Program (OPD) at the Life Recovery Center (LRC) Addiction Treatment Center for concurrent alcohol and tobacco use disorders. The patien

Interactive effect of substance abuse and depression on adolescent social competence.

This study explored the interactive effect of substance abuse and depression on social competence among 106 adolescent inpatients (57% female, 86% Caucasian). Substance abuse and depression were conceptualized using dimensional ratings of illness severity based on adolescent interviews, whereas social competence was conceptualized using parent ratings of adolescent behavior. Cross-sectional analyses revealed that substance abuse and depression had a negative interactive effect on adolescent social competence: Higher severity levels of both dimensions were associated with lower levels of compet

Externalizing behaviors as predictors of substance initiation trajectories among rural adolescents.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence of externalizing behaviors on substance initiation trajectories among rural adolescents over a 42-month period. METHODS: Data were obtained from 198 rural adolescents (105 boys, 93 girls) who were participating in a longitudinal study. At the baseline assessment, subjects were on average 12.3 years of age. RESULTS: Controlling for gender, higher baseline levels of externalizing were associated with a greater number of substances initiated over time. The initiation trajectory was curvilinear. Girls, compared with boys,

A comparison of pathological gamblers with and without substance abuse treatment histories.

This study evaluated the prevalence and correlates of substance abuse histories in 341 consecutive admissions to gambling treatment programs. After controlling for gender, income, and site, gamblers with substance abuse treatment histories (SATH; 31%) had more severe problems than gamblers with no substance abuse treatment histories (NSATH) on the Gambling, Alcohol, Drug, Psychiatric, and Employment scales of the Addiction Severity Index. The SATH group had more years of gambling problems and gambled more days in the month prior to initiating gambling treatment. The SATH gamblers were also mor

Diagnostic subgroups within a sample of comorbid substance abusers: correlates and characteristics.

Patients seeking treatment at the Addiction Research Foundation for a substance problem but who also reported psychiatric symptomatology were referred to the Mental Health Unit. Following a clinical psychiatric interview, these patients were categorized into one of six diagnostic subgroups based on the presence of DSM-III-R psychiatric disorders: mood, anxiety, psychotic, organic, Axis-II, and adjustment. A control group of patients referred to the Mental Health Unit but not diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder was also included. These groups were compared on several demographic, substance us

Modeling internalizing symptoms and substance use comorbidity using causal network methodology.

The cooccurrence of internalizing and substance use disorders can be explained from several perspectives, yet most are modeled in isolation and limited to correlational evidence. Advancements on two common etiological perspectives - i) internalizing symptoms predisposing toward substance use disorder symptoms, ii) transdiagnostic factors predisposing toward both symptom domains - are therefore hampered by scarce multivariate and causal evidence. The present study addressed this gap by modeling direct (causal) links from internalizing symptoms to substance use behaviors and (causal) links to th

Substance use associated with unintended pregnancy outcomes in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth.

Abortion is known to be associated with higher rates of substance abuse, but no studies have compared substance use rates associated with abortion compared to delivery of an unintended pregnancy. This study examines data for women in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth whose first pregnancy was unintended. Women with no pregnancies were also used as a control group. Use of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and behaviors suggestive of alcohol abuse were examined an average of four years after the target pregnancy among women with prior histories of delivering an unintended pregnancy (n = 535),
