Contribution of lakes to global greenhouse gas emissions: Mechanisms, quantification and mitigation strategies.

Lakes cover only 1.8 % of Earth's land yet emit 0.35-0.55 Pg C yr-1 as CO2, 60-120 Tg CH4, and 60-150 Gg N2O, about 5 % of global fossil-fuel emissions. This review synthesizes recent advances in lake GHG mechanisms, measurement, and mitigation, and outlines key research directions. Net respiration generally exceeds primary production, maintaining CO2 supersaturation, while anaerobic methanogenesis dominates CH4 release; oxic pathways linked to methyl-phosphonate cleavage and cyanobacterial leakage add up to 28 % of CH4 in warm, P-limited, dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-rich waters. Roughly 60

Fe(III) Mineral Encrustation Uncouples Respiration from Reproduction of the Nitrate-Reducing Fe(II)-Oxidizing Bacterium Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1.

Fe(II) can be oxidized by mixotrophic nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing (NRFeOx) bacteria to Fe(III), leading to mineral precipitation. However, the effects of this process on the metabolism and reproductive ability of Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterial cells have not yet been quantified. In this study, we investigated the effects of Fe(II) on the mixotrophic NRFeOx bacteria Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1 by performing cell plate counts, chemical analyses, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, live/dead fluorescence staining, and proteomic analysis. The results showed that nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizi

Crop rotation-driven changes in secondary metabolites of potato rhizosphere soil exert stronger regulation on soil microbial community.

INTRODUCTION: Crop rotation promotes ecological effects and production by regulating belowground processes, particularly the shaping of the rhizosphere soil microbiome. Rhizosphere metabolites are a key driver of belowground processes and play a crucial role in shaping soil microbial community composition. However, the rhizosphere metabolites of different potato rotations have rarely been reported, and the regulation of key metabolites on the rhizosphere soil microbiome remains unclear. METHODS: This study measured agronomic traits of potatoes, collected potato rhizosphere soils from three cr

Monsoon-driven nutrient pollution assessment and source tracking in tropical mountain headwaters using positive matrix factorisation.

Tropical mountain ecosystems, driven by monsoonal hydrology and escalating land use, are highly vulnerable to nutrient enrichment, which threatens downstream water quality. This study investigates the spatiotemporal variability and quantitative source apportionment of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphorus (DIP), and silica (DSi) across surface water and groundwater in the Munnar Critical Zone Observatory (CZO), Western Ghats, India. Seasonal monitoring over three monsoon cycles revealed extremely elevated DIN/DIP ratios (up to 299:1), indicating severe phosphorus (P) limitation, refle

Driving factors of atmospheric nitrogen oxides emissions and pollution in ChinaA.

Human-induced nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions have long dominated atmospheric nitrate (NO3-) pollution in China, yet linkages among anthropogenic drivers, emission trends, and deposition responses remain poorly quantified. Using δ15N of particulate and precipitation NO3- across eight Chinese regions for 2001-2022, we provide comprehensive isotopic constraints on NOx sources and their atmospheric fate. Spatially, modelled source-fraction estimates suggest relatively higher coal-combustion contributions in Northeast and North China and larger microbial N cycles contributions in the Southwest and

Nitrous oxide emissions from rivers in agricultural area under different rainfall scenarios: the effect of typhoons in intensifying the release.

In agricultural regions, the chronic enrichment of nitrogen coupled with episodic hydrological disturbances can synergistically amplify riverine Nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes through synchronized biogeochemical perturbations. This dual forcing mechanism underscores the critical role of agricultural watersheds as major contributors to terrestrial N2O budgets. Notably, rainfall events have important impacts on river nitrogen cycle and hydrological processes, indirectly perturb river N2O emission. However, the impacts of rainfall-particularly under extreme weather conditions-on riverine N2O dynamics

Host- and microbial-mediated mucin degradation differentially shape Pseudomonas aeruginosa physiology and gene expression.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a hallmark pathogen of cystic fibrosis (CF) airway infections, capable of reaching high cell densities despite its limited ability to directly utilize mucin glycoproteins as a nutrient source. In the CF lung, however, P. aeruginosa may access preferred carbon sources (e.g., amino acids and short-chain fatty acids) through metabolic cross-feeding with co-colonizing mucin-degrading microbes. Although host-derived enzymes such as neutrophil elastase can also degrade mucins, the extent to which host-mediated mucin breakdown supports P. aeruginosa growth remains unclear. T

Different responses of greenhouse gas emissions to biochar-based silicate fertilizer across rice seasons in a rice-producing region of China.

Rice paddies are a significant agricultural land type and a notable source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making mitigation efforts critical for ecological sustainability. Both steel slag and biochar mitigate GHG emissions, and their co-application may enhance mitigation through complementary mechanisms; however, evaluations of their combined effects remain limited. This study explored the innovative use of a biochar-based silicate fertilizer (BSF), created by combining steel slag and biochar, in a field experiment across two rice-growing seasons. By measuring GHG fluxes, soil properties,

Operational parameters regulate in-situ emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) during kitchen waste composting: Linking functional microbial dynamics to emission mitigation.

Emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) from kitchen waste composting plants causes significant environmental issues. This paper characterized the emission profiles of VOCs and GHGs from KW composting with different operating parameters. Quantitative results showed that emission intensities spanned 7.4-folds (VOCs: 196-1456 μg·m-3) to 8.2-folds (GHGs: 79-647 mg·m-3) between C1 (R1M1A1) and C9 (R3M2A3). Seven categories of VOCs were identified, with the 'Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene' (BTEX) group as the most abundant chemical family. Most VOCs (exc

Zoned bioremediation of trichloroethene and toluene co-contaminants using immobilized anaerobic consortia in saturated porous media.

Trichloroethene (TCE) and toluene are ubiquitous co-contaminants in groundwater and soil, yet effective strategies for their concurrent remediation remain challenging due to inhibitory interactions and substrate competitions. In this study, we obtained two anaerobic enrichment cultures capable of detoxifying TCE and toluene with degradation rates of 141.7 ± 57.5 and 317.6 ± 1.3 µmol/(L·d), respectively. The 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR revealed that Dehalococcoides spp. dechlorinated TCE to ethene, while Azoarcus-Aromatoleum spp. mediated toluene degradation under the

Extreme trophic tales: deciphering bacterial diversity and potential functions in oligotrophic and hypereutrophic lakes.

BACKGROUND: Oligotrophy and hypereutrophy represent the two extremes of lake trophic states, and understanding the distribution of bacterial communities across these contrasting conditions is crucial for advancing aquatic microbial research. Despite the significance of these extreme trophic states, bacterial community characteristics and co-occurrence patterns in such environments have been scarcely interpreted. To bridge this knowledge gap, we collected 60 water samples from Lake Fuxian (oligotrophic) and Lake Xingyun (hypereutrophic) during different hydrological periods. RESULTS: Employing

The Effects of Model Insoluble Copper Compounds in a Sedimentary Environment on Denitrifying Anaerobic Methane Oxidation (DAMO) Enrichment.

The contribution of denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) as a methane sink across different habitats, especially those affected by anthropogenic activities, remains unclear. Mining and industrial and domestic use of metals/metal-containing compounds can all cause metal contamination in freshwater ecosystems. Precipitation of metal ions often limits their toxicity to local microorganisms, yet microbial activity may also cause the redissolution of various precipitates. In contrast to most other studies that apply soluble metal compounds, this study investigated the responses of enrich

To what extent do water reuse treatments reduce antibiotic resistance indicators? A comparison of two full-scale systems.

Water reuse is an essential strategy for reducing water demand from conventional sources, alleviating water stress, and promoting sustainability, but understanding the effectiveness of associated treatment processes as barriers to the spread of antibiotic resistance is an important consideration to protecting human health. We comprehensively evaluated the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in two field-operational water reuse systems with distinct treatment trains, one producing water for indirect potable reuse (ozone/biologically-active car

Novel insight into ammonium, phosphate, and iron(II) dynamics in the sediment porewater of a constructed wetland under artificial aeration through the diffusive equilibrium in thin films technique.

The analysis of porewater concentrations in constructed wetland sediments could help to understand biogeochemical processes, the sources and sinks of nutrients, and their effect on overlying water quality. In this study, we measured high-resolution porewater concentration profiles of ammonium (NH4+-N), nitrate (NO3N), phosphate (PO43--P), and ferrous iron (Fe(II)) in-situ in the Laratinga constructed wetland in Mount Barker (South Australia) using diffusive equilibration in thin films (DET) techniques. Measurements were taken under light and dark conditions, and non-aerated and aerated conditi

Feasibility of methane bioconversion to methanol by acid-tolerant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria.

Bioconversion of biogas to value-added liquids has received increasing attention over the years. However, many biological processes are restricted under acidic conditions owing to the excessive carbon dioxide (CO2, 30-40% v/v) in biogas. Here, using an enriched culture dominated by acid-tolerant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) 'Candidatus Nitrosoglobus', this study examined the feasibility of producing methanol from methane in the CO2-acidified environment (i.e. pH of 5.0). Within the tested dissolved methane range (0.1-0.9 mM), methane oxidation by the acid-tolerant AOB culture followed firs

[Seasonal Response Features of Microbial Community Structure for Nitrogen Transformation in Inland Lakes on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau].

Studying the nitrogen transformation characteristics of microbial communities in the inland lakes of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QXP) is of great significance for a deeper understanding of the nitrogen budget balance and biogeochemical cycling in the regional lake ecosystems. Based on metagenomic sequencing technology, this study constructed a non-redundant gene library of nitrogen-transforming microorganisms and conducted multivariate statistical analysis to explore the characteristics and assembly mechanisms of nitrogen-transforming microbial communities in inland lakes on the QXP. The resul

Coupled Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry and Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopic Studies Unravel the Mechanism of Nitric Oxide Electroreduction on Platinum.

The nitric oxide electroreduction reaction (NORR) has received considerable attention due to its importance in electrochemical denitrification of nitrogen oxides in groundwater and industrial waste gases and electrochemical ammonia synthesis. However, the detailed mechanism and the factors that affect product selectivity are far less understood. Employing coupled differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and attenuated total reflection-surface-enhanced infrared absorption (ATR-SEIRA) spectroscopy, adsorbed species and volatile solution products, during the adsorption of NO and NORR

Unveiling microplastic's role in nitrogen cycling: Metagenomic insights from estuarine sediment microcosms.

Marine microplastics (MPs) pollution, with rivers as a major source, leads to MPs accumulation in estuarine sediments, which are also nitrogen cycling hotspots. However, the impact of MPs on nitrogen cycling in estuarine sediments has rarely been documented. In this study, we conducted microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of commonly encountered polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) MPs, with two MPs concentrations (0.3% and 3% wet sediment weight) based on environmental concentration considerations and dose-response effects, on sediment dissolved oxygen (DO) diffusion capacity and

Nearly 30a shrub introduction in desert steppes has led to an increase in saprotrophic fungi, accelerating the degradation of carbon compounds and nitrate reduction.

Clarifying how soil microbial communities respond to shrub introduction after overgrazing in desert steppe and their potential functions is crucial for understanding the biogeochemical processes involved in vegetation transformation and sustainability of desert grasslands. However, the dynamics of microbial communities remain poorly understood. We selected enclosed grasslands (20a), overgrazed grasslands, and shrublands (6a, 15a, and 25a) to explore how shrubs introduced influence soil microbial structure and functional groups over the long term after desert grassland degradation. The results

Nitrogen and nitrous oxides emission characteristics of anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment process under different oxygen regulation strategies.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) (i.e., nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)), which could be produced in wastewater treatment process and result in greenhouse effect and atmospheric pollution, respectively, have been studied limitedly in their emission characteristics and transformation mechanisms. In this study, intelligent oxygen regulation was applied in anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment process (I-A/O), and its effects on regulating NOx and N2O transformations were extensively explored by comparing it with conventional A/O process (C-A/O). Results showed that the avera
