Of 191 children who had had infantile seborrheic dermatitis, 88 were reexamined after 10 years. One child had psoriasis, four had atopic dermatitis, and seven had seborrheic dermatitis, which suggests a link with adult seborrheic dermatitis. A familial tendency toward infantile seborrheic dermatitis was noted, as was an increased incidence of allergy within the family.

Eye complications were studied in 240 cases of atopic dermatitis (age distribution 9 months to 40 years) hospitalized in the dermatology ward of our hospital. One hundred and thirty-four patients (55.8%) had at least one eye complication. Allergic conjunctivitis, cataracts, vernal conjunctivitis, retinal detachment, keratoconus, and retinal tears were detected in 28.3%, 17.9%, 2.1%, 1.3%, 1.3%, and 0.8%, respectively. Serum IgE levels and eye complications did not correlate. Routine ophthalmological examinations are recommended for patients with atopic dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis is the most frequent cause of occupational skin disease. Here, the author describes a host of common irritants and lists, by occupation, the irritants to which workers are most likely to be exposed. Diagnosis, prevention, therapy, and prognosis also are reviewed.

We report 2 cases of dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) with lymphoma: a non-Hodgkin's malignant histiocytic lymphoma and a rare phenotype of Hodgkin's disease. With these 2 cases, 32 cases of DH complicated by lymphoma have now been documented. Reviewing the literature we show that the majority of lymphomas (78.1%) arises from the gastro-intestinal tract and that almost all cases of DH with lymphoma are associated with coeliac disease. The possible preventive role of a gluten-free diet is discussed.

6 female patients with allergic contact dermatitis from textile dyes are described. Lesions were confined to areas in direct contact with the offending garment, mainly where friction and/or pressure occurred. Patch tests were positive to 2 or more disperse dyes. Thin-layer chromatography was carried out on the dyes extracted from fabrics of 3 patients, for the identification of textile dyes.

Atopic dermatitis remains a common skin problem in the pediatric age group. General approaches to management focus on reducing inflammation and pruritus as well as preventing xerosis. Ichthyosis vulgaris is the most common form of the ichthyoses and often is associated with atopic dermatitis. Recognition of these conditions is necessary to institute therapy that will alleviate the discomfort experienced by affected individuals.

Dermatitis artefacta is a chronic skin lesion produced by self-trauma. Avoidance of further trauma, topical steroids and psychological therapy all play a part in the treatment of such lesions. Unresolved lesions may become large and disfiguring and subject to infection. We report a case of one such lesion in an elderly woman who persistently excoriated a cholecystectomy scar over 40 years. A nonatopic female secretary developed hand dermatitis after 1 year of full-time work with telefax paper. Her dermatitis improved on sick leave and vacation and relapsed at work. Patch testing showed allergic reactions to several fragrances, balsam of Peru, colophony and neomycin.
