Data of the European Practice Database (EPD) were used to investigate the use of phosphate binders in the European HD population. A cross-sectional observation among five participating countries of the cycle 2 study revealed that most patients used phosphate binders and many of them used more than one agent. Calcium-based products were most frequently used (55% of HD patients) followed by sevelamer (37%). There was a wide variation between different countries in the kind of phosphates that were used. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) may have low plasma vitamin A levels from malabsorption, zinc deficiency, liver disease, or poor compliance with prescribed supplements. In view of the increasing number of adults with CF, many of whom drive cars, it is important to assess vitamin A status. In our centre an attempt has been made to achieve normal levels of fat soluble vitamins by annual estimation of plasma levels and appropriate oral supplementation. This study aimed to determine if this approach prevents vitamin A deficiency and the consequent problems with dark adaptation.

Weight loss and eating-related disorders are commonly seen in patients with advanced cancer. Using a qualitative approach this study set out to explore how nurses currently manage weight loss and eating difficulties in everyday practice as well as exploring what guides their decision-making with regard to choice of nutritional interventions and support strategies employed.
