Differences in BTBR T+ tf/J and C57BL/6J mice on probabilistic reversal learning and stereotyped behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represent a class of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impairments in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behavior. This latter class of symptoms often includes features such as compulsive behaviors and resistance to change. The BTBR T+ tf/J mouse strain has been used as an animal model to investigate the social communication and restricted interest features in ASD. Less is known about whether this mouse strain models cognitive flexibility deficits also observed in ASD. The present e

Selective lesions of the dorsomedial striatum impair serial spatial reversal learning in rats.

Impairments in reversal learning have been attributed to orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) dysfunction in many species. However, the role of subcortical areas interconnected with the OFC such as the striatum remains poorly understood. This study directly evaluated the contribution of core and shell sub-regions of the nucleus accumbens (NAc), dorsomedial (DMS) and dorsolateral (DLS) striatum to reversal learning of an instrumental two-lever spatial discrimination task in rats. Selective NAc core, DMS and DLS lesions were achieved with microinjections of quinolinic acid and NAc shell lesions with ibote

Developmental phonagnosia: a selective deficit of vocal identity recognition.

Phonagnosia, the inability to recognize familiar voices, has been studied in brain-damaged patients but no cases due to developmental problems have been reported. Here we describe the case of KH, a 60-year-old active professional woman who reports that she has always experienced severe voice recognition difficulties. Her hearing abilities are normal, and an MRI scan showed no evidence of brain damage in regions associated with voice or auditory perception. To better understand her condition and to assess models of voice and high-level auditory processing, we tested KH on behavioural tasks meas

Impaired filtering of behaviourally irrelevant visual information in dyslexia.

A recent proposal suggests that dyslexic individuals suffer from attentional deficiencies, which impair the ability to selectively process incoming visual information. To investigate this possibility, we employed a spatial cueing procedure in conjunction with a single fixation visual search task measuring thresholds for discriminating the orientation of a target stimulus. Replicating preliminary findings in an earlier report, we found evidence of a striking dissociation between dyslexic participants' performance in cued and uncued conditions. Whereas uncued search results were equivalent for d

Cross-generalization between a cocaine cue and two antihistamines.

Rats were trained to discriminate between 10 mg/kg cocaine and saline injections under a fixed ratio 10 schedule of food-motivated lever press responding. Once stimulus control was achieved, reinforced test sessions were conducted to assess the degree of generalization of a wide range of cocaine doses and the cross-generalization between the cocaine training stimulus and two over-the-counter antihistaminic drugs, diphenhydramine and doxylamine, when administered with saline or in drug combinations. Cocaine produced a dose-dependent generalization to the 10 mg/kg training stimulus. Cocaine also

Spatial suppression of motion and motion segmentation in peripheral vision.

This study examined motion segmentation and spatial suppression of motion in central versus peripheral vision, their relationship, and whether scaling peripheral stimuli to match larger middle temporal receptive fields reduces eccentricity effects. Ten adults (mean 27.5 years) completed motion segmentation and motion discrimination tasks across five contrast levels (12%-92%), three eccentricities (0°, 10°, 20°), and two stimulus conditions (scaled, unscaled). In the segmentation task, participants identified the tilt of a motion-defined ellipse within an oppositely moving background; segmentat

Comparison of naloxone, naltrexone, nalmefene, and methocinnamox for preventing and reversing the discriminative stimulus effects of buprenorphine and carfentanil in rats discriminating fentanyl from saline.

Naloxone and nalmefene are μ opioid receptor (MOR) antagonist medications for reversing opioid overdose and naltrexone is a MOR antagonist medication for treating opioid use disorder (preventing relapse). MOR agonist medications for treating opioid use disorder include methadone and buprenorphine. The magnitude of effect of buprenorphine can be less than the effect of higher efficacy MOR agonists with some effects of buprenorphine (eg, ventilatory depression) resistant to reversal by naloxone, compared with reversal of the effects of other MOR agonists. Drug discrimination was used to compare

Exploring the Sensorimotor System's Role in Emotional Authenticity Discrimination: A ccPAS Study.

Emotional authenticity discrimination (EAD) is key for social interactions. The social cognition hypothesis suggests that emotion recognition relies on a dynamic visuo-motor interaction. However, the direction and role of this interaction in EAD are still unclear. Here, we investigate the impact of cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (ccPAS) on the functional connectivity within the visuomotor networks involved in EAD of facial expressions. Sixty-four participants were randomly assigned to different ccPAS conditions targeting the backward and forward connectivity between the right

Tactile stimulus discrimination in adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a behavioral and neurophysiological study.

Body image disturbance (BID) is a key symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN) and involves body size overestimation. Although this overestimation might be related to perceptual deficits, little is known about tactile perception in AN. To clarify the role of putative tactile deficits in BID, the present study investigated 36 adolescent female AN patients and 41 matched healthy controls (HC) using a tactile oddball paradigm during parallel EEG and MEG (EMEG) measurement. Tactile perception was behaviorally tested via the Touch Test (tactile perception threshold), a deviant count task, and a tactile sti

Cortical visual processing differences in myopia and blur.

Myopia is projected to impact over 50 % of the global population by 2050. Despite links to long-lasting anatomical changes in visual cortices, little is known of potential consequences of myopia on visual brain functions, such as visual completion. We hypothesized that adults suffering from moderate myopia process attentionally demanding visual stimuli under optical blur differently than emmetropic adults. Non myopes (N = 12) and low-to-mild myopes (N = 13) were tested under -3 diopters of lens-induced blur. Participants performed an illusory contour discrimination task while 128-channel EEG w

Speech Perception and Discrimination in Noise for Long-term Bilateral Hearing Aids Users: An ERP Study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the characteristics of auditory event-related potentials (AERP) evoked by vowel and consonant contrasts in prelingual deafness adults, who fitted with bilateral hearing aids (HA) in quiet and noisy environments. METHODS: Standard stimuli /ba/ (75%) and deviant stimuli (/ga/ and /bu/, 12.5% each) were presented using a passive oddball paradigm in quiet and noisy (+10 decibel [dB] signal-to-noise ratio [SNR]) conditions. Eighteen young adults aged 18-23 years with long-term bilateral HA, and 20 age-matched normal hearing (NH) individuals participated in the s

The effects of acute exercise on emotional pattern separation in adolescents and young adults.

Acute exercise has been associated with cognitive improvements, particularly in memory processes linked to the hippocampus, such as the ability to discriminate between similar stimuli, called hippocampal pattern separation. This can be assessed behaviorally with a mnemonic discrimination task and neurally with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Additionally, previous research has shown an emotional modulatory effect on pattern separation, involving the amygdala. In this randomized between-subject study, we investigated whether a 10-minute bout of moderate-intensity exercise, compare

Fear really comes from the unknowns: exploring the impact of HIV stigma and discrimination on quality of life for people living with HIV in Singapore through the minority stress model.

Background Structural stigma and institutionalised discrimination towards people living with HIV remain pervasive in many settings. However, qualitative explorations of experiences of stigma, health and social service engagement, and quality of life among people living with HIV in Singapore remain under-researched. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 73 participants in Singapore. These included 56 people living with HIV (30 men who have sex with men, 23 heterosexual men, and 3 women) and 17 stakeholders including healthcare professionals and other allied workers. Interviews

Functional rate-code models of the auditory brainstem for predicting lateralization and discrimination data of human binaural perception.

This paper presents a rate-code model of binaural interaction inspired by recent neurophysiological findings. The model consists of a peripheral part and a binaural part. The binaural part is composed of models of the medial superior olive (MSO) and the lateral superior olive (LSO), which are parts of the auditory brainstem. The MSO and LSO model outputs are preprocessed in the interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD) central stages, respectively, which give absolute values of the predicted lateralization at their outputs, allowing a direct comparison with psychop

Impairments in reinforcement learning do not explain enhanced habit formation in cocaine use disorder.

RATIONALE: Drug addiction has been suggested to develop through drug-induced changes in learning and memory processes. Whilst the initiation of drug use is typically goal-directed and hedonically motivated, over time, drug-taking may develop into a stimulus-driven habit, characterised by persistent use of the drug irrespective of the consequences. Converging lines of evidence suggest that stimulant drugs facilitate the transition of goal-directed into habitual drug-taking, but their contribution to goal-directed learning is less clear. Computational modelling may provide an elegant means for e

Temporal discrimination threshold and blink reflex recovery cycle in cervical dystonia - two sides of the same coin?

INTRODUCTION: Elevated temporal discrimination thresholds (TDT) have been found in cervical dystonia (CD) and unaffected first-degree relatives, indicating autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance, serving as an endophenotype and being indicative of abnormal inhibitory processing within the brainstem-basal ganglia circuits. The blink reflex R2 recovery cycle (BRRC) is also a measure of excitability of brainstem-basal ganglia circuits, and inconsistent findings are reported in CD. The aim was to investigate TDT and BRRC in CD and evaluate its reliability as an endophenotype. METH

Sensory representation of an auditory cued tactile stimulus in the posterior parietal cortex of the mouse.

Sensory association cortices receive diverse inputs with their role in representing and integrating multi-sensory content remaining unclear. Here we examined the neuronal correlates of an auditory-tactile stimulus sequence in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) using 2-photon calcium imaging in awake mice. We find that neuronal subpopulations in layer 2/3 of PPC reliably represent texture-touch events, in addition to auditory cues that presage the incoming tactile stimulus. Notably, altering the flow of sensory events through omission of the cued texture touch elicited large responses in a sub
