OBJECTIVE: Home-based non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has been suggested as an adjunct treatment strategy for neuro-psychiatric disorders. There are currently no available solutions to direct and monitor correct placement of the stimulation electrodes. To address this issue, we propose an easy-to-use digital tool to support patients for self-application.
METHODS: We recruited 36 healthy participants and compared their cap placement performance with the one of a NIBS-expert investigator. We tested participants' placement accuracy with instructions before (Pre) and after the investigator'

6-nitrodopamine (6-ND) is released from human umbilical cord vessels and modulates vascular reactivity by acting as a dopamine antagonist. Here we investigate whether 6-ND is released by the rat isolated vas deferens and its effect on this tissue. Dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline and 6-ND levels were quantified in rat isolated vas deferens by LC-MS-MS. Electric-field stimulation (EFS) and concentration-response curves to 6-ND, noradrenaline, dopamine and adrenaline were performed in the absence and in the presence (30 min) of L-NAME, SCH-23390, haloperidol, PG-01037, sonepiprazole, desipram

Rumination is a cognitive-affective thinking style that plays a key role in the onset and maintenance of depression. Recently, it was shown that clinically depressed patients who received a neurocognitive training - involving two weeks of repetitive cognitive control exercises that necessitate prefrontal engagement - are more able to control over ruminative negative thoughts than patients who only received treatment as usual. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a biological technique that can directly modulate prefrontal excitability via the manipulation of neural membrane potent

Upper extremity motor impairment is a major contributing factor to functional disability of stroke patients. Functional electric stimulation (FES) is one of the therapeutic regimens for the management of upper extremity dysfunction after stroke. This review shows that therapeutic FES intervention on supraspinatus and posterior deltoid muscles for 6 weeks is effective to speed up upper limb motor recovery in hemiplegia of short-duration after stroke or less severely affected symptoms. The positive effect of FES could be attributable to neural mechanisms including: an enhanced information flow f…

BACKGROUND: The term "neuralgia of the occipital nerve" in clinical work includes different kinds of pain in the occipital region. Correctly, this diagnosis should be reserved for such pain syndromes which, corresponding to the definition of neuralgia, are due to damage of the cervical roots C1-C3 or of the major occipital nerve arising from those roots. We introduce an operative method to treat chronic therapy-resistant headaches in the area of the major and minor occipital nerve. The courses of three of the first patients operated in our hospital are described.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) studies in substance use disorders (SUDs) have shown promise in reducing drug craving and consumption. Effect sizes reported in previous studies provide a quantitative measure of the efficacy of this intervention. However, the specific brain regions where electric field strength is most strongly associated with therapeutic effect sizes remain unclear. To address this gap, we quantified the efficacy of tES in reducing craving and consumption using Hedges' g and employed a combined meta-analysis and electric field modeling (meta-modeling) framework to id

Electrical stimulation and block of peripheral nerves hold great promise for treatment of a range of disease and disorders, but promising results from preclinical studies often fail to translate to successful clinical therapies. Differences in neural anatomy across species require different electrodes and stimulation parameters to achieve equivalent nerve responses, and accounting for the consequences of these factors is difficult. We describe the implementation, validation, and application of a standardized, modular, and scalable computational modeling pipeline for biophysical simulations of

Noninvasive electrical stimulation of the central nervous system is attracting increasing interest from the clinical and academic communities as well as from high-tech companies. This interest was sparked by two landmark studies conducted in 2000 and 2001 at the University of G?ttingen, Germany. Michael Nitsche and Walter Paulus showed that by passing a weak, almost imperceptible electric current between two electrodes on the scalp, they could alter the way the human brain responds to stimuli and that the effect persisted for some time after the current was stopped. These findings opened the p

Background/Objective: Partial-thickness rotator cuff tears represent a distinct, highly prevalent clinical entity governed by a multifactorial continuum of intrinsic senescence and extrinsic biomechanical overload, rather than an oversimplified acute traumatic versus degenerative dichotomy. While conservative management centered on kinesiotherapy is primary, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation (MENS) are widely utilized as adjunctive electrophysical modalities. However, empirical trials directly comparing their long-term ther

INTRODUCTION: Acute ischaemic stroke and primary intracerebral haemorrhage are complicated by oropharyngeal dysphagia in more than 50% of patients. Currently, there are no definitive treatments for post-stroke dysphagia (PSD). Pharyngeal electrical stimulation (PES) can drive long-term beneficial changes in the cortical control of swallowing with functionally relevant reorganisation of the swallowing cortex correlating with reduced dysphagia.
METHODS: The pharyngeal electrical stimulation for acute stroke dysphagia trial (PhEAST) is an international prospective randomised open-label blinded-e

To compare brain activation in the dopaminergic reward system between 26 LPE patients and 16 normal controls (NCs) via glans penis electric stimulation task-fMRI and resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI). The beta value, degree centrality (DC), and functional connectivity (FC) were calculated. The Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlation between the fMRI measurements and disease severity. After task-fMRI, PE patients had significantly higher beta values in the dopaminergic reward system, including the bilateral thalamus and inferior frontal gyrus than NCs. In the rs-fMRI, higher DC value…

OBJECTIVES: Electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS) combines electric stimulation via a cochlear implant (CI) with residual low-frequency acoustic hearing, with benefits for music appreciation and speech perception in noise. However, many EAS CI users lose residual acoustic hearing, reducing this benefit. The main objectives of this study were to determine whether chronic EAS leads to more hearing loss compared with CI surgery alone in an aged guinea pig model, and to assess the relationship of any hearing loss to histology measures. Conversely, it is also important to understand factors impacting …

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is capable of stimulating neurons in the brain non-invasively and provides numerous possibilities for the treatment of various neurological disorders such as major depressive disorder, Parkinson's disease, obsessive compulsive disorder. TMS coils can affect the distribution of induced electric fields significantly, thus the design of TMS coils is always a popular topic in TMS studies. Yet the importance of the role of anatomical structures in the induced electric field has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, this work has compared the strength o
