Social cognition in psychosis: multidimensional structure, clinical correlates, and relationship with functional outcome.

Social cognitive impairments are common, detectable across a wide range of tasks, and appear to play a key role in explaining poor outcome in schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. However, little is known about the underlying factor structure of social cognition in people with psychotic disorders due to a lack of exploratory factor analyses using a relatively comprehensive social cognitive assessment battery. In a sample of 85 outpatients with psychosis, we examined the factor structure and clinical/functional correlates of eight indexes derived from five social cognition tasks that s

AI enhanced surgeons' faster responses to intraoperative bleeding in laparoscopic surgery: a preclinical randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) model for real-time detection and tracking of intraoperative bleeding sites during laparoscopic surgery, and to evaluate whether AI assistance improves surgeons' bleeding‑identification performance. METHODS: From January to September 2023, laparoscopic surgical videos were retrospectively collected from 20 medical centers in China. Senior surgeons identified bleeding events, extracted relevant video clips, and manually annotated bleeding frames to train the AI model. Model performance was evaluated using the F1-score, mean abs

Perceptions of Chemoprevention Among Women at High Risk for Breast Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Breast cancer (BC) chemoprevention (CP) is highly effective in reducing invasive BC risk, yet uptake among eligible women at high risk remains critically low. Prior research has not adequately examined CP decision-making alongside other primary prevention therapies, such as statins, in the practical context of multimorbidity and polypharmacy. OBJECTIVE: To identify cognitive, emotional, and perceptual factors associated with accepting statins while declining or deferring breast cancer chemoprevention. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this exploratory qualitative study, in-de

Gut bacteria and their metabolites may influence our decisions, intelligence, cognition, and consciousness.

The human gut hosts approximately 38 trillion bacteria, representing 400 to 500 species. Gut bacteria are in constant communication with the central nervous system (CNS) via the enteric nervous system (ENS), the peripheral nervous system (PNS), the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the immune system, the enteroendocrine system (EES), and the vagus nerve (VN). Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially butyrate, strengthen the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and modulate inflammatory signaling, thereby affecting brain function and cognitive performance. Acetate enhances the synthesis of lipid-rich mye

A Rebuttal To Psychoanalytic Biography Of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) was the founder of the modern-day Turkish Republic. Although much has been published about his life, only one biography adopted a psychological/psychoanalytic perspective. The authors Vamık Volkan and Norman Itzkowitz argued that the main driving mechanism behind Atatürk's behavior was his narcissistic personality organization. Their framework considered Mustafa's birth, which occurred shortly after his elder brothers had passed away, and how his mother, presumably in a state of severe depression, could not provide adequate emotional care, which gave way to co

Towards a dynamic, comprehensive conceptualization of dyslexia.

Here we build from the central strength of the existing definition of dyslexia-its emphasis on neurobiological origins-and proffer a set of seven core principles for a new, more comprehensive conceptualization of dyslexia. These principles derive from two major research directions: (1) the still evolving history of attempts to explain dyslexia, including in varied writing systems; and (2) the study of the reading brain circuit, its development, and its genetic and environmental influences. What emerges from connecting these two directions is a dynamic conceptualization of dyslexia that incorpo

Experiences and reflections of patients with motor neuron disease on breaking the news in a two-tiered appointment: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Breaking bad news should be fine-tuned to the individual patient, contain intelligible information, include emotional support and offer a tailor-made treatment plan. To achieve this goal in motor neuron disease (MND), neurologists of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) centre Amsterdam deliver the message on 2 separate visits within 14 days. AIM: To evaluate how patients with MND react to and view disclosure of the diagnosis, in this 2-tiered approach. METHODS: Non-participating observations and in-depth interviews with patients were conducted in 1 tertiary ALS referral centr

Maternal predictors of children's social cognition: an attachment perspective.

BACKGROUND: This paper assumes that the capacities to (1) openly acknowledge, and (2) elaborate a resourceful plan for coping with distress in the self and others are central features of social cognition. METHOD: These capacities were assessed in a sample (N = 51) of 11-year-old children whose mothers and fathers had previously provided Adult Attachment Interviews (AAIs) before their children were born. The children were shown six line-drawn sequences of child(ren), with peer(s) and/or family in diverse situations involving some moderate distress. The experimenter described the adversity show

Where Can Artificial Intelligence Assist Cancer Care?: Examining Patient-Centered Communication Dimension Effects.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how aspects of patient-centered communication (PCC) may directly or indirectly predict patients' preferences for artificial intelligences (AIs) versus human medical professionals, based on the stimulus-organism-response model. STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN: As AI gains popularity and researchers explore its application in the medical context, it is important to understand how current patient-provider dynamics involving high technology (e.g., telehealth communication) may shape patients' perceptions of future use of AI, especially in the context of cancer care where patient sa

Intervening on the Developmental Course of Children With Borderline Intellectual Functioning With a Multimodal Intervention: Results From a Randomized Controlled Trial.

UNLABELLED: An adverse social environment is a major risk factor for borderline intellectual functioning (BIF), a condition characterized by an intelligence quotient (IQ) within the low range of normality (70-85) with difficulties in the academic achievements and adaptive behavior. Children with BIF show impairments in planning, language, movement, emotion regulation, and social abilities. Moreover, the BIF condition exposes children to an increased risk of school failures and the development of mental health problems, and poverty in adulthood. Thus, an early and effective intervention capable

Social cognition in idiopathic generalized epilepsies and potential neuroanatomical correlates.

Social cognition allows us to elaborate mental representations of social relationships and use them appropriately in a social environment. One of its main attributes is the so-called Theory of Mind (ToM), which consists of the ability to attribute beliefs, intentions, emotions, and feelings to self and others. Investigating social cognition may help understand the poor social outcome often experienced by persons with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsies (IGE), who otherwise present with normal intelligence. In recent years, several studies have addressed social cognition in subjects with focal ep

Hybrid CNN-embedding fusion with MFCC-SVM for speech emotion recognition: Random vs actor-wise evaluation on CREMA-D.

Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) is an important component of human-centered intelligent systems, yet robust performance remains challenging when speaker identities differ between training and testing. This study presents a protocol-aware and reproducible comparison on the CREMA-D corpus using three pipelines: (i) a classical MFCC-based Support Vector Machine (SVM), (ii) a log-mel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and (iii) a lightweight hybrid model that concatenates handcrafted acoustic descriptors with CNN-derived embeddings and uses an SVM classifier. The methodological contribution is n

'If You Don't Speak Up, It Will Eat You Up': A Critical Discourse Analysis of Voice and Silence in a Multicultural Clinical Healthcare System.

Despite sustained efforts to promote speaking up in healthcare, improvements remain ephemeral. In diverse clinical learning and practice environments shaped by generational, cultural, professional and pedagogical plurality, speaking up operates as a situated social practice. Adopting an interpretive bricolage, we conducted a critical discourse analysis of interviews with 17 healthcare professionals within a multicultural academic health system. We identified four definitional discourses and eight interpretive repertoires through which participants legitimised voice using different moral and re
