We analyzed the records of 182 newborns with birth weights under 1000 g, who survived longer than seven days, to determine risk factors for subacute mortality and morbidity. Statistical analysis using logarithm-linear modeling was used to identify complex interactions and to minimize confounding. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to examine the impact of exposure to maternal cigarette smoking on neonatal outcomes of very preterm infants.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study examined preterm infants (<33 weeks gestational age) admitted to the Canadian Neonatal Network centers between 2003 and 2011. Mortality and major morbidities (bronchopulmonary dysplasia, severe intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, and retinopathy) were compared between infants exposed and unexposed to maternal smoking during pregnancy after adjusting for confounders.

An open, non-comparative study was designed to evaluate the safety and tolerance of parenteral piperacillin/tazobactam in very low birth weight infants. Two patients with previously undiagnosed agranulocytosis had rapidly fatal Clostridium septicum sepsis and neutropenic enterocolitis. Meckel's diverticulum occurs in approximately 2% of the general population and is usually asymptomatic. Four percent of cases will present as an acute abdomen caused by intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal bleeding, and inflammation.
