Psychiatric aspects of therapeutic abortion.

A search of the literature on the psychiatric aspects of abortion revealed poor study design, a lack of clear criteria for decisions for or against abortion, poor definition of psychologic symptoms experienced by patients, absence of control groups in clinical studies, and indecisiveness and uncritical attitudes in writers from various disciplines. A review of the sequelae of therapeutic abortion revealed that although the data are vague, symptoms of depression were reported most frequently, whereas those of psychosis were rare. Positive emotional responses and a favourable attitude toward the

An AI assistant for critically assessing and synthesizing clusters of journal articles.

Current large language models (LLMs) face significant challenges in attempting to synthesize and critically assess conflicting causal claims in scientific literature about exposure-associated health effects. This paper examines the design and performance of AIA2, an experimental AI system (freely available at http://cloud.cox-associates.com/) designed to help explore and illustrate potential applications of current AI in assisting analysis of clusters of related scientific articles, focusing on causal claims in complex domains such as epidemiology, toxicology, and risk analysis. Building on an

Development and validation of a tool for ambulatory monitoring of peripherally inserted central catheter-associated complications.

INTRODUCTION: Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) are the preferred vascular access for Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) due to user-friendliness and high safety level. Nevertheless, the lack of a validated tool hampers the yet ill-charted epidemiology and monitoring of PICC related complications in ambulatory care. METHODS: A sequential exploratory mixed-method three phase research design was used to develop and validate a monitoring tool for PICC complications in OPAT. A literature review and co-design approach allowed its development, followed by Delphi panel c

Study of child language development and disorders in Iran: A systematic review of the literature.

Child language development and disorder in Iran has been the focus for research by different professions, the most prominent ones among them being psychologists and speech therapists. Epidemiological studies indicate that between 8% and 12% of children show noticeable signs of language impairment in the preschool years; however, research on child language in Iran is not extensive compared to studies in English speaking countries, which are currently the basis of clinical decision-making in Iran. Consequently, there is no information about the prevalence of child language disorders in Iranian p

Epidemiologic and genetic aspects of spina bifida and other neural tube defects.

The worldwide incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs) ranges from 1.0 to 10.0 per 1,000 births with almost equal frequencies between two major categories: anencephaly and spina bifida (SB). Epidemiological studies have provided valuable insight for (a) researchers to identify nongenetic and genetic factors contributing to etiology, (b) public health officials to design and implement policies to prevent NTD pregnancies, and (c) individuals to take precautions to reduce the chance of having an NTD-affected pregnancy. Despite extensive research, our knowledge of the genetic etiology of human NTDs

Routine Clinical Care Creatinine Data in Denmark - An Epidemiological Resource for Nationwide Population-Based Studies of Kidney Disease.

PURPOSE: Creatinine data are key in identifying acute and chronic kidney disease. In Denmark, routine clinical care creatinine data have been collected regionally in the Clinical Laboratory Information System Research Database (LABKA) since the 1990s and nationwide in the Register of Laboratory Results for Research (RLRR) since 2013. Here we describe the geographical coverage of the databases and characteristics of Danish individuals with creatinine tests. This information is pivotal for the design and interpretation of studies using these data to examine kidney disease epidemiology. PATIENTS

Serum antibodies to human papillomavirus (HPV) pseudovirions correlate with natural infection for 13 genital HPV types.

BACKGROUND: Serology for human papillomaviruses (HPV) types -16 and -18 is established as an important tool for studies of HPV vaccinology and epidemiology. However, as there are a large number of oncogenic genital types of HPV there is a need for development of high-throughput, validated HPV serological assays that can be used for more comprehensive seroepidemiological studies and for research on multivalent HPV vaccines. OBJECTIVES: To develop a multiplexed pseudovirion-based serological assay (PsV-Luminex) encompassing 21 HPV types and validate the method by correlating the serology with t

Context-specific variation in life history traits and behavior of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti, the vector for dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, poses a growing global epidemiological risk. Despite extensive research on Ae. aegypti's life history traits and behavior, critical knowledge gaps persist, particularly in integrating these findings across varied experimental contexts. The plasticity of Ae. aegypti's traits throughout its life cycle allows dynamic responses to environmental changes, yet understanding these variations within heterogeneous study designs remains challenging. A critical aspect often overlooked is the impact of using lab-adapted lines of Ae.
