Intraoperative Loss of Tibialis Anterior Transcranial Electrical Motor Evoked Potentials Predicted Postoperative Footdrop.

BACKGROUND: Footdrop secondary to L5 root injury is a rare complication associated with lumbar surgery. It is unclear whether intraoperative neuromonitoring can detect such an injury. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old man who had had bilateral chronic L5 radiculopathy underwent L4-S1 lumbosacral decompression and fusion. During surgery, the patient lost transcranial electrical motor evoked potentials (tceMEPs) from the left tibialis anterior (TA) at the time of L5-S1 intervertebral cage placement. Neither intraoperative free-run electromyography nor somatosensory evoked potentials detected any …

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Effects on Single and Paired Flash Visual Evoked Potentials.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied over the occipital cortex has a controversial effect on the visual cortex excitability. Paired flash visual evoked potentials (paired F-VEPs) offer a unique method to express neural inhibition within the visual system. However, no studies have explored the effects of tDCS on F-VEPs in humans. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of single- and paired-F-VEPs during and after tDCS in healthy humans. Twenty-six healthy volunteers participated. F-VEPs were recorded from occipital electrodes with closed eyes. Stimuli were single fl…

Underwater anesthesia of diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) for measurement of auditory evoked potentials.

Investigations into the biology of aquatic and semiaquatic species, including those involving sensory specialization, often require creative solutions to novel questions. We developed a technique for safely anesthetizing a semiaquatic chelonian species, the diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), for measurement of auditory evoked potentials while animals were completely submerged in water. Custom-modified endotracheal tubes were used to obtain a watertight seal on both sides of the glottis and prevent aspiration of water during testing. No adverse effects were seen after the procedures, a…

Reduced functional connectivity in visual evoked potentials in children with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: An analysis of EEG synchrony between homologous early visual areas tested the hypothesis that interhemispheric functional connectivity during visual stimulation is reduced in children with autism compared to controls. METHODS: EEG power and coherence within and between two homologous regions of the occipital cortex were measured during long latency flash visual evoked potentials. Measures were compared between two groups of children (5.5-8.5years), one with autism spectrum disorders and the other with typical development. RESULTS: In and below the theta band, interhemispheric sync…

Evaluation of optic neuropathy in multiple sclerosis using low-contrast visual evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: Contrast acuity (identification of low-contrast letters on a white background) is frequently reduced in patients with demyelinating optic neuropathy associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), even when high-contrast (Snellen) visual acuity is normal. Since visual evoked potentials (VEPs) induced with high-contrast pattern-reversal stimuli are typically increased in latency in demyelinating optic neuropathy, we asked if VEPs induced with low-contrast stimuli would be more prolonged and thus helpful in identifying demyelinating optic neuropathy in MS. METHODS: We studied 15 patients w…

Lack of cold pressor test-induced effect on visual-evoked potentials in migraine.

In patients with migraine, the various sensory stimulation modalities, including visual stimuli, invariably fail to elicit the normal response habituation. Whether this lack of habituation depends on abnormal activity in the sub-cortical structures responsible for processing incoming information as well as nociception and antinociception or on abnormal cortical excitability per se remains debateable. To find out whether inducing tonic pain in the hand by cold pressure test (CPT) alters the lack of visual-evoked potential (VEP) habituation in migraineurs without aura studied between attacks we

Interrelationship of optical coherence tomography and multifocal visual-evoked potentials after optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: Acute optic neuritis (ON) is often followed by recovery of visual function. Although this recovery is mainly attributable to resolution of the acute inflammation, the redistribution of ion channels along the demyelinated membrane, and subsequent remyelination, part of it may be the result of neural plasticity. In the present study, the interrelationship was examined between structural (retinal nerve fiber layer [RNFL] thickness) and functional (amplitude of multifocal visual evoked potentials [mfVEPs]) measures of the integrity of the visual pathway in the postacute stage of ON, to de…

[The role of brain stem evoked potentials in acoustic neuroma screening and diagnosis].

For acoustic tumours > 2 cm the sensitivity of brainstem evoked auditory potentials (BAEP) to detect the retrocochlear lesions is 100 % as for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). According to the literature the sensitivity for detection of retrocochlear pathology in tumours < 1 cm is estimated to be between 75 % and 95 %. In the MRI the sensitivity and specificity in such smaller tumours is reported to be 100 %. A normal result of the BAEP examination and for additional neurootologic tests helps to increase the rate of safe exclusion of retrocochlear pathology. By at this time not yet routinely

The effect of acute sleep deprivation on visual evoked potentials in professional drivers.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that as little as 18 hours of sleep deprivation can cause deleterious effects on performance. It has also been suggested that sleep deprivation can cause a "tunnel-vision" effect, in which attention is restricted to the center of the visual field. The current study aimed to replicate these behavioral effects and to examine the electrophysiological underpinnings of these changes. DESIGN: Repeated-measures experimental study. SETTING: University laboratory. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen professional drivers (1 woman; mean age = 45.3 +/

Diagnostic value of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in cerebellar and lower-brainstem strokes.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) provide assessment of vestibular function. They consist in picking up compound muscle action potentials in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles in response to auditory stimulation of the vestibulum. VEMP testing has found application mainly in peripheral vestibular disorders, whereas reports about VEMPs in central vestibular lesions are rather scarce. AIMS OF THE STUDY: Based on the physiological connections between the cerebellum and the vestibular nuclei, we investigated the influence on VEMPs of cerebellar and lower-brainstem strok

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials in infants: gender differences during early visual maturation.

This paper investigates gender differences in the peak latency and amplitude of the P1 component of the pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (pattern-reversal VEP) recorded in healthy term infants. Pattern-reversal VEPs in response to a series of high contrast black and white checks (check widths 120', 60', 30', 24', 12', 6') were recorded in 50 infants (20 males, 30 females) at 50 weeks post-conceptional age (PCA) and in 49 infants (22 males, 27 females) at 66 weeks PCA. Peak latency of the major component, P1, was considerably shorter in female compared with male infants. Differences in
