Adverse effects of dietary lupine in broiler chickens.

This study describes the adverse effects of dietary lupines in broiler chickens for which lupine seeds (Lupinus angustifolius) in raw, dehulled, or autoclaved forms were used as a replacement for soybean meal (SBM) in practical diets. Test diets contained 35% SBM (control) or raw (40%), autoclaved (40%), or dehulled (35%) lupine seed meal. All diets were isocaloric (3,230 kcal/kg AME) and isonitrogenous (23% crude protein). Each diet was offered ad libitum to a group of 16 (four replicates with four birds per replicate) day-old male broiler chicks for 21 d. Chemical analysis of lupine seeds sh

Protective effect of isoflavone derivative against photocarcinogenesis in a mouse model.

Plant-derived isoflavones are currently receiving much attention because of their phyto-estrogenic and antioxidant activities. In this study, we describe novel photoprotective effects of one isoflavone derivative from red clover (NV07), following its application topically in Skh:HR-1 hairless mice. We found that in mice irradiated in the short-term (3 days) with minimally erythemal solar simulated UV radiation, topical lotions containing NV07 dose-responsively reduced the erythema-associated oedema, the induction of ornithine decarboxylase, and the suppression of contact hypersensitivity. Tissue hypertrophy and epithelial proliferation rate in the gut of rats fed on bread and haricot beans (Phaseolus vulgaris).

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that increasing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in the large bowel increases gut epithelial proliferation rate (EPR). Two experiments were carried out in which rats were fed on bread (wholemeal or white)-based diets containing graded amounts of cooked haricot (Phaseolus vulgaris) beans; the latter are a rich source of fermentable carbohydrates. Consumption of beans was associated with several-fold increases in SCFA production with the greatest relative increase being for butyrate. Despite the very large increase in SCFA production,

Diagnostic Pitfalls of Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising from an Epidermal Cyst.

Mucuna pruriens (Mp) is an annual and perennial legume which belongs to the family Fabaceae having different types of therapeutic activity. Anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-epileptic, anti-microbial, etc. are the example of some most common activities of Mp. It is widely utilized as a potent aphrodisiac. The anti-Parkinsonian activity of Mp was explored since the nineteenth century. The neuroprotective activity of Mp was shown by several researchers. Levodopa (L-DOPA) is the important constituents responsible for the anti-Parkinsonian activity of Mp. Apart from L-DOPA, several other imp…

Ethnobotany for food security and ecological transition: wild food plant gathering and consumption among four cultural groups in Kurram District, NW Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: In traditional food systems, especially those of rural populations around the world, wild food plants remain crucial. These reso … d only 11 plants. The most dominant families were Rosaceae, followed by Polygonaceae, Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Moraceae, and Plantaginaceae. The comparative analysis we conducted with the pre-existing Pakistani ethnobotanical studies revealed that 23 wild edible plants have not been previously reported as food items in the area under study, which …

Synergistic mutual potentiation of antifungal activity of Zuccagnia punctata Cav. and Larrea nitida Cav. extracts in clinical isolates of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata.

BACKGROUND: Zuccagnia punctata Cav. (Fabaceae) and Larrea nitida Cav. (Zygophyllaceae) are indistinctly or jointly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of fungal-related infections. Although their dichloromethane (DCM) extract have demonstrated moderate antifungal activities when tested on their own, antifungal properties of combinations of both plants have not been assessed previously. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to establish with statistical rigor whether Z. punctata (ZpE) and L. nitida DCM extract (LnE) interact synergistically against the clinically important fungi Candid…

Phytochemical Analysis, In Vitro Anti-Inflammatory Activity, and In Silico Molecular Docking of the Essential Oil from Munronia lancifolia.

This investigation represents the first assessment of the phytochemical profile and biological properties of Munronia lancifolia essential oil. Extracted through hydro-distillation with a yield of 0.1%, the oil made up 57 identified constituents. The primary classes were oxygenated monoterpenes (0.67%), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (9.41%), oxygenated sesquiterpenes (85.34%), and non-terpenic compounds (3.76%). Key components included 23 (1,5-epoxysalvial-4(14)-ene), 24 (spathulenol), 25 (caryophyllene oxide), 35 (isospathulenol), and 40 (valerianol) with high concentrations. The oil exhibited s

Potential toxic elements partitioning in soil and grains and human health risks in a CKDu-endemic region of Sri Lanka.

Nephrotoxic elements contamination in daily consumed dietary staples is becoming a growing environmental and public health issue among chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu)-endemic areas in Sri Lanka. This study evaluated the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in rice (Oryza sativa) as well as selected legumes, including mung bean (Vigna radiata), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), and long bean (Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis). Development of chitosan/navy bean extract-based nanocarriers for oral delivery of insulin.

Strategies have been developed for insulin administration to treat diabetes. In this sense, insulin vehiculation in nanoparticles could effectively protect this bioactive against digestion conditions and allow its intestinal absorption. To exhibit such features, it is essential to choose the materials that will compose the nanoparticles adequately. This study employed genipin-mediated crosslinking of chitosan (CH) and navy bean extract (NBE) to develop nanocarriers, considering their mucoadhesive and cytoadhesive properties, respectively. The effect of different crosslinking reaction condition

Integrated Evaluation of the Multifunctional DPP-IV and ACE Inhibitory Effect of Soybean and Pea Protein Hydrolysates.

Nowadays, notwithstanding their nutritional and technological properties, food bioactive peptides from plant sources garner increasing attention for their ability to impart more than one beneficial effect on human health. Legumes, which stand out thanks to their high protein content, represent valuable sources of bioactive peptides. In this context, this study focused on the characterization of the potential pleotropic activity of two commercially available soybean (SH) and pea (PH) protein hydrolysates, respectively. Since the biological activity of a specific protein hydrolysate is strictly

Nanoemulsions with oleoresin of Copaifera reticulata (Leguminosae) improve anthelmintic efficacy in the control of monogenean parasites when compared to oleoresin without nanoformulation.

This study compared the in vitro anthelmintic activity of Copaifera reticulata oleoresin (200, 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 mg/L) and of nanoemulsions prepared with this oleoresin (50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/L) against monogeneans on the gills of Colossoma macropomum. The major compounds present in the oleoresin of C. reticulata were γ-macrocarpene (14.2%), α-bergamotene (13.6%), β-selinene (13.4%) and β-caryophyllene (11.7%). All concentrations of the nanoemulsion and the oleoresin without nanoformulation showed anthelmintic efficacy against monogeneans, and higher concentrations led to more rap
