INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are handheld, battery-powered vaporizing devices. It is estimated that more than 25% of youth have used these devices recreationally. While vaping-associated lung injury is an increasingly recognized risk, little is known about the risk of traumatic injuries associated with e-cigarette malfunction.
METHODS: A multi-institutional retrospective study was performed by querying the electronic health records at nine children's hospitals. Patients who sustained traumatic injuries while vaping from January 2016 through December 2019 were identified.

The anatomy of the buccal region of the face is complex and injuries in this region can lead to significant complications. Trauma in this region can easily injure the parotid duct and facial nerve. The management of parotid duct injuries is usually by microsurgical anastomosis, diversion of salivary flow by creating an oral fistula, or suppression of salivary gland function. The authors present a case of parotid duct injury treated by using an epidural catheter.

We report the case of a 16-year-old boy admitted to hospital because of multiple stab wounds. Exploration under general anaesthesia revealed bilateral simultaneous injuries of the internal jugular vein. The management of these injuries is discussed. Optimal treatment requires preservation of at least one internal jugular vein. Both veins may be ligated but this can result in facial oedema and permanent cosmetic defects, and even in death due to cerebral oedema.

Although traumatic injury of the facial nerve is a relatively common condition in neurosurgical practice, bilateral lesions related to fracture of temporal bones are seldom seen. We report the case of a 38-year-old patient admitted to Intensive Care Unit after severe head trauma requiring ventilatory support (Glasgow Coma Scale of 7 on admission). A computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed a longitudinal fracture of the right temporal bone and a transversal fracture of the left. After successful weaning from respirator, bilateral facial paralysis was observed. The possible aetiologies for facia

INTRODUCTION: Within the United States, the number of players participating in baseball increased by nearly 21% to 15.9 million between 2014 and 2019. Additionally, batting helmets with face-masks are encouraged yet optional in youth baseball as well as college baseball and softball. in light of inconsistencies in safety equipment enforcement and usage, this study aims to perform a comparative analysis of the number and frequency of baseball and softball-related craniofacial injuries (CFis).
METHODS: Data regarding baseball and softball-related injuries were gathered from the National Electro…

Recent advances have radically changed the management of facial fractures. CT scanning, extensive exposure, and rigid plate fixation in the setting of the trauma center have permitted early operation with improved results. A subset of patients with facial fractures will also have intracranial injuries (ICI). We sought to identify parameters associated with an increased risk for ICI. We also sought to examine the safety and limits of early craniofacial repair in patients with intracranial injuries. Of 114 mid-face fractures treated over a 1-year period, 43 (38%) had a concomitant ICI. The major

Both reinnervated and dormant neurons can be observed in facial nucleus following facial-facial anastomosis. Although they may play different roles in the remodeling mechanism of facial nucleus during facial nerve injury and regeneration, comprehensive gene profiling analysis of these two neuron types has never been performed due to the difficulty in isolating specific neuron populations and extracting sufficient amount of RNAs from the heterogeneous facial nucleus. In this study, we developed a method to isolate the Fluoro-Ruby (FR) retrogradely labeled reinnervated facial motor neurons and t

OBJECTIVE: Hypoglossal-facial neurorrhaphy has been widely used for reanimation of paralyzed facial muscles after irreversible proximal injury of the facial nerve. However, complete section of the hypoglossal nerve occasionally results in hemiglossal dysfunction and interferes with swallowing and speech. To reduce this morbidity, a modified technique with partial section of the hypoglossal nerve after mastoid dissection of the facial nerve (HFM) has been used. We report our experience with the HFM technique, retrospectively comparing the outcome with results of the classic hypoglossal-facial n

Facial nerve injuries lead to significant functional impairments and psychological distress for affected patients. Effective repair of these injuries remains a challenge. For longer nerve gaps, the regeneration outcomes after nerve grafting remain suboptimal due to limited sources and postoperative immune responses. Tissue engineering techniques are conventional methods for repairing peripheral nerve defects. This study explores the potential of dental pulp cells (DPCs) combined with stem cell factor (SCF) to enhance neurogenic differentiation and improve facial nerve regeneration. DPCs were i

Restoring normal function and appearance after massive facial injuries with bone loss is an important unsolved problem in surgery. An important limitation of the current methods is heuristic ad hoc design of bone replacements by the operating surgeon at the time of surgery. This problem might be addressed by incorporating a computational method known as topological optimization into routine surgical planning. We tested the feasibility of using a multiresolution three-dimensional topological optimization to design replacements for massive midface injuries with bone loss. The final solution to m…

Animals may be responsible for an array of potentially lethal injuries. Blunt force injuries characteristically involve larger animals such as cattle or horses that may kick, crush, or trample a victim causing head and facial injuries. Farm workers in particular are at high risk of lethal injuries involving the head and torso. Significant blunt trauma may be found in vehicle occupants after collisions with large animals such as camels or moose. Rarely, zookeepers may be crushed by particularly massive animals such as elephants. Sharp force injuries usually involve carnivore bites, most often f…
