Benign parotid tumours have historically often been managed surgically by superficial parotidectomy. While this approach usually gives a generous cuff of surrounding normal parotid tissue to increase tumour margins, it requires a much larger incision than the increasingly used extracapsular dissection (ECD) technique. BACKGROUND: Schwannomas of the head and neck are uncommon tumors that arise from the nerve sheath and may afflict peripheral, autonomic, or cranial nerves. It is important to consider the possible differential diagnoses of a nasolabial lump in a child because its appropriate treatment varies widely.

Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin (MCS) is a rare skin appendage tumor and only a few cases of MCS with endocrine differentiation have been reported. A forty-eight-year-old man presented with multiple pinhead to rice-sized papules on the face. Histopathologic examination showed a typical syringoma and dilated hair follicles containing several vellus hairs in the middle of a fibrotic stroma. We describe four cases of unusual superficial cutaneous cysts that have a lining epithelium composed of apocrine cells immediately adjacent to keratinizing squamous epithelium with an intact granular layer. Two of the cysts were on the nipple of the breast and two of the cysts were on the face. The lumina of all four cysts contained keratin. Immunoperoxidase staining for carcinoembryonic antigen in the facial cysts showed positive staining within the apocrine cells of the lining epithelium in one case. Systematised epidermal naevi are hamartomas developing from neural ectoderm that can be quite extensive, typically with involvement of the face, neck, scalp, arms, legs and trunk. Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is rare. We report on a 38-year-old Caucasian woman with systematised epidermal naevus syndrome who presented with previously undescribed involvement of the oesophagus, as well as the right side of her scalp, forehead, cheeks, chin, oral mucosa, neck, arms and trunk.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Invasion of trigeminal and facial perineural spaces is a recognized complication of cutaneous malignancies. Centripetal spread along the trigeminal nerve axis and into the cavernous sinus and the gasserian ganglion is rare. Metastasis to the leptomeninges and cauda equina has not been reported. Sonography of the neck and face is highly suited for confirming visible, palpable or generally tentative findings. A method of performing a systematic examination will be described in detail and followed by numerous examples descriptive of soft tissue pathologies of the face, salivary glands and lymph nodes. The thyroid gland will be dealt with in a different report. The criterion that applied to all masses was that it was only possible to render a tentative diagnosis to be subsequently confirmed by sonography-guided fine-needle aspiration. Histological follow-up, however, was never excluded.
