Vitamin K-dependent and other rare coagulation factor deficiencies: a single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Rare coagulation factor deficiency (RFD) is characterized by a deficiency of factor (F) I, FII, FV, FVII, FX, FXI, FXII, FXIII, or a combined deficiency of FV + FVIII or vitamin K-dependent factors and accounts for approximately 5% of all bleeding disorders. The prevalence of RFD in the general population can range from 1 in 1,000,000 for FX to 1 in 2–3 million for FXIII. Combined deficiencies of vitamin K-related factors have been reported in 30 families worldwide. These patients can present with a wide range of clinical symptoms, from mucocutaneous bleeding to life-threatening sy

Noninvasive Prediction of Clinically Significant Portal Hypertension in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Tumor-Adjusted Model.

INTRODUCTION: Noninvasive assessment of clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) using liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and platelet count (per Baveno VII criteria) may be influenced by tumor-related factors in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We evaluated the relationship between LSM and hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) and developed a tumor-adjusted model for CSPH prediction in HCC. METHODS: In this multicenter study, 452 patients with compensated cirrhosis and HCC who underwent LSM and HVPG within three months were retrospectively analyzed. The correlation bet

Awareness of dysgeusia and gustatory tests in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

PURPOSE: We analyzed the prevalence of gustatory test abnormalities in breast cancer (BC) patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: We enrolled 43 BC patients undergoing chemotherapy and 38 BC patients who had never undergone chemotherapy (control group). Two gustatory tests were conducted: an instillation method examining the threshold for four basic taste stimuli and an electrogustometry method measuring the threshold for perception with electric stimulation at the front two-thirds of the tongue (cranial nerve VII) and at the back third of the tongue (cranial nerve IX). The results of the

Proteomic profiling of cephalic vein reveals potential biomarkers for arteriovenous fistula neointimal hyperplasia in ESRD patients.

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access for patients with end-stage renal disease; however, its failure is primarily due to neointimal hyperplasia. Five patients who underwent initial AVF surgery served as the control group, and another five patients with failed AVF surgery served as the experimental group. Herein, we employed mass spectrometry (MS)-based quantitative proteomics coupled with tandem mass tag labeling to screen differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the anastomotic cephalic vein, followed by bioinformatics analyses and verification experiments. A total

Transplantation of human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells promotes neurological recovery in an intracerebral hemorrhage rat model.

Human amniotic membrane mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs) have recently been suggested as ideal candidate stem cells for cell-based therapy. Many studies have reported the therapeutic effects of hAMSCs in numerous disease models. However, no studies have used hAMSCs to treat intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). In the present study, we examined the therapeutic potential of hAMSCs in a rat model of ICH, and characterized the possible mechanisms of action. Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to ICH by intrastriatal injection of VII collagenase, and then were intracerebrally administered hAMSCs, fibro

Role of modulation of vascular endothelial growth factor and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in gastric ulcer healing in diabetic rats.

The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of drugs that increase gastric vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and suppress gastric tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in gastric ulcer healing in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Sixty male albino rats were made diabetic by intraperitoneal (i.p.) streptozotocin injection and ten rats were injected i.p. by a single dose of saline. Six weeks following streptozotocin or saline injection, gastric ulcers were induced by serosal application of acetic acid. Three days after acetic acid application, rats were divided into: grou

Morphological characterisation of Dactylogyrus spp. (Platyhelminthes: Monopisthocotylea) from Enteromius spp. (Cypriniformes) in Cameroon, with description of a new species.

Monogeneans are fish ectoparasites which infested commonly gill filament. They are characterised by their sclerotized haptoral and genital structures. Morphological study of gill monogeneans was conducted at Lebamzip, Center Region of Cameroon. Fish were caught along Cesala River. Each monogenean was mounted between slide and coverslip in a drop of GAP mixture. Drawings of the sclerotized structures were made using Corel Draw and measurements were taken on Amscope. Four monogeneans species belonging to the genus Dactylogyrus were identified. One new species is described Dactylogyrus cesalaensi

Mechanistic insights into the dynamics of plasma membrane repair in cancer.

Cancer cells are well equipped with plasma membrane repair to survive mechanical tension, chemical stress, immune assaults and therapeutic interventions. Maintaining plasma membrane integrity is quintessential for tumor cells as it plays a pivotal role in communication between the internal environment of the tumor cell and the extracellular surroundings. Therefore, tumor cells achieve plasma membrane repair by several dynamic repair pathways such as calcium (Ca2+) guided lysosomal exocytosis, annexins (ANXs) mediated membrane repair and shedding, damaged oriented membrane repair via endocytosi

Two chromosome-level genome assemblies of Rhodiola shed new light on genome evolution in rapid radiation and evolution of the biosynthetic pathway of salidroside.

Rhodiola L. is a genus that has undergone rapid radiation in the mid-Miocene and may represent a typic case of adaptive radiation. Many species of Rhodiola have also been widely used as an important adaptogen in traditional medicines for centuries. However, a lack of high-quality chromosome-level genomes hinders in-depth study of its evolution and biosynthetic pathway of secondary metabolites. Here, we assembled two chromosome-level genomes for two Rhodiola species with different chromosome number and sexual system. The assembled genome size of R. chrysanthemifolia (2n = 14; hermaphrodite) and

Effects of acute exposure to Al2O3-NPs (α and γ) and white noise and their combination on cochlea structure and function in Wistar rats.

Hearing loss induced by noise and combinations of factors is a common occupational disease among workers. This study aimed to investigate the impact of acute exposure to white noise and Al2O3 NPs, alone and in combination, on changes in the hearing and structural functions of the cochlea in rats. Thirty-six rats were randomly assigned to one of six groups: Control, acute exposure to white noise, exposure to γ-Al2O3 NPs, exposure to noise plus γ-Al2O3 NPs, exposure to α-Al2O3 NPs, and exposure to the combination of noise plus α-Al2O3 NPs. TTS and PTS were examined using DPOAE, while oxidative i

Fever as a risk factor for increased response to vitamin K antagonists: a review of the evidence and potential mechanisms.

Numerous factors affect the response to vitamin K antagonists (VKA) including age, dietary vitamin K, other drugs, pharmacogenetics, and disease states. In antithrombotic guidelines, fever is mentioned as a factor that may increase response to VKA. The purpose of this article is to review the available evidence regarding the effect of fever on response to VKA, and to discuss possible mechanisms of this effect. We performed a search of the English literature from 1943 to June 2014, using the key words fever AND warfarin, acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon, coumarin anticoagulants and VKA; fever AND v

Effect of Blood Group on von Willebrand Factor Antigen Levels in Compensated Advanced Chronic Liver Disease and Utility of von Willebrand Factor-Platelet Ratio for Detecting Clinically Significant Portal Hypertension.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In the general population, von Willebrand Factor (vWF) antigen levels are 20-30% lower in blood group O. However, the effect of blood group O on vWF antigen in compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) is unknown. Furthermore, there are limited data comparing vWF with elastography for assessment of clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH). We assessed the effect of blood group O on vWF antigen levels, and the discriminative ability of vWF-platelet ratio (VITRO) for assessment of CSPH in comparison to liver stiffness measurement (LSM) on elastography in cAC

Substituted hydroxyphenanthrenes in opium pyrolysates implicated in oesophageal cancer in Iran: structures and in vitro metabolic activation of a novel class of mutagens.

Previous epidemiological and laboratory studies have indicated an association between the ingestion of opium pyrolysates, dietary deficiencies and the high incidence of oesophageal cancer in subjects in north-east Iran. Pyrolysates of opium, and particularly of morphine, a major opium alkaloid, were both shown to contain similar highly mutagenic substances that were also clastogenic in mammalian cells and which transformed hamster embryo cells in culture. We now report the isolation and characterization of nine of the most abundant mutagenic compounds present in morphine pyrolysates, using h.p

Brain plasticity as a basis for recovery of function in humans.

One of the factors leading to the virtual neglect of the long-term potential for functional recovery following brain damage was the eclipse of plasticity concepts during the 100 years following Broca's 1861 publication on location of function. However, in the last 30 years evidence has been accumulating that demonstrates the plasticity of the brain and thus recovery potential is a subject of practical as well as theoretical interest. "Unmasking" of relatively inactive pathways, the taking over of functional representation by undamaged brain tissue, and neuronal group selection are among the me

Effect of in vitro hemodilution with hydroxyethyl starch and dextran on the activity of plasma clotting factors.

OBJECTIVE: A recent thrombelastography study indicated a compromised in vitro blood coagulation after 10:10 (equal parts of blood and infusion) and 10:4 (10 parts blood to four parts infusion) hemodilution with several plasma substitutes. Oncovertin N (Oncovertin) (a 10% dextran 40 solution) had the strongest anticoagulant effect of all solutions tested, and HAES-sterile 10% (HAES) (a 10% hydroxyethyl starch 200/0.5 solution) showed the strongest effect of five different hydroxyethyl starch preparations. The aim of this study was to determine how in vitro hemodilution with HAES and Oncovertin

Keel venom: Rhabdophis subminiatus (Red-Necked Keelback) venom pathophysiologically affects diverse blood clotting pathways.

Venoms are evolutionary novelties that have real-world implications due to their impact upon human health. However, relative to the abundant … rothrombin twice that of FX), the venom of Rhabdophis subminiatus is able to more potently activate Factor VII (ten times that of prothrombin), while also activating FXII and FIX equipotently to prothrombin, and with FXI also activated but at a much lower level. The ability to activate FVII represents a third convergent evolution of this trait. The Australia …
