The scale of myocardial involvement in varicella myocarditis.

Two patients with varicella myocarditis are described. An arrhythmia associated with complete recovery occurred in the first patient whereas intractable congestive heart failure complicated by hemiplegia resulted in a fatal outcome in the other case. We stress the extent of myocardial involvement produced by the herpes zoster virus in the setting of varicella.

Biliary cystadenoma of the common bile duct with secondary biliary cirrhosis. Report of a case.

A case of cystadenoma of the common bile duct is described. An erroneous diagnosis made in a young woman caused secondary biliary cirrhosis with fatal outcome. The diagnosis of cirrhosis should never be established without thorough visualization of the entire biliary tract in patients with biochemical or clinical jaundice of unknown origin.

Fulminant hepatic failure and fatal encephalopathy associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection.

A case of fulminant hepatic failure, associated with infectious mononucleosis, in a previously healthy 14-year-old girl is reported. Despite intensive therapy, which included the use of acyclovir, charcoal haemoperfusion, and measures to control her raised intracranial pressure (guided by serial EEG and auditory brainstem-evoked response recordings), the outcome was fatal.

Accidental subarachnoid injection of gallamine. A case report.

Accidental subarachnoid injection of gallamine and its management is reported. Methods of identification of the drug in the c.s.f. are described. Early treatment should be initiated, since the drug was still identifiable in the c.s.f. after 90 min. Removal of the c.s.f. and sedation may have prevented a fatal outcome in our patient.

Clinical and echocardiographic findings in patients with COVID-19 across different severity levels.

Cardiovascular pathology can complicate the course of COVID-19. The study aimed to identify echocardiographic abnormalities and key prognostic factors influencing severe and fatal COVID-19 outcomes. This retrospective cohort study included clinical and echocardiogram data from 194 medical records of hospitalized patients with COVID-19: 100 moderate cases, 34 severe cases with favorable outcomes, and 60 severe cases with fatal outcomes. Мы сообщаем, что во время эпидемии 2024 года в Бразилии при переливании был совершен серьезный случай заболевания денге в организме реципиента стволовых клеток, который подкреплялся филогенетической связью и превратился в фатальный результат. [Chronic gastric ulcer in a child not diagnosed during life].

Chronic gastric ulcer is a rare disease in childhood. The article presents data on the epidemiology and etiology of the disease in children, describes the case of a chronic gastric ulcer complicated by penetration into the liver, perforation, development of abdominal sepsis, with a fatal outcome in a 7-year-old girl.

Bilateral non-contiguous necrotizing fasciitis of the lower extremities.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an uncommon soft tissue infection. Multifocal-extremity NF is a rarity with high mortality rates. Herein we report a case of bilateral non-contiguous NF of the lower extremities due to Escherichia coli with a fatal outcome, stressing the necessity of rapid and aggressive intervention in suspected cases.

A neonatal case of Japanese spotted fever.

We herein present the case of a 28-day-old female with Japanese spotted fever, who is the youngest reported patient so far. Tick-borne diseases, including Japanese spotted fever, should be included in the differential diagnosis of eruptive fever even in neonates because a treatment delay can lead to a fatal outcome.

HIV infection, pulmonary arterial hypertension and pregnancy: a fatal triad.

A 30-year-old pregnant HIV-seropositive woman presented with symptoms and signs suggestive of severe pulmonary arterial hypertension, with a fatal outcome. Histological features of pulmonary arterial hypertension were present at post mortem. This is the first report of histologically confirmed HIV-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with pregnancy in Africa.

Superior mesentric artery embolism.

Mesenteric artery embolism is a rare and an acute abdominal emergency with a very high mortality rate which requires a high index of suspicion for its diagnosis. We hereby report a 55 years old male with rheumatic heart disease in atrial fibrillation with thromboembolic superior mesenteric artery occlusion with a fatal outcome.

The authors present a case of a newborn of a diabetic mother with fatal outcome in the 6th day postnatally. The principal troubles in newborn were: fetal macrosomy, hypoglycemia and a lot of congenital malformations. They discuss the relationship between the maternal alteration of hydrocarbonate metabolism and the troubles in fetus and newborn.

Fatal mumps myocarditis.

The case of a 9 year old boy with acute renal failure and myocarditis as complications of mumps is reported. The cardiac rhythm and conduction disorders which appeared after admission were refractory to treatment and the outcome was fatal. On necropsy, minimal interstitial nephritis and myocarditis were seen, confirming the clinical diagnosis.

Listeriosis as a cause of maternal death: an obstetric complication of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

A case of maternal death due to Listeria monocytogenes bacteremia, with survival of the prematurely delivered infant, is presented. Lymphopenia and a Haitian origin suggest that the fatal outcome was related to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). To our knowledge, this is the first recorded instance of a maternal death due to listeriosis.

[Malignant systemic mastocytosis (author's transl)].

The case of a 37 year old man with systemic malignant cutaneous mastocytosis is reported. The outcome was fatal after eight months. Death was due to a diffuse hemorrhagic syndrome which originated in an abnormal circulating heparinoid. Nosologically, this is a border-line case between mast cell leukemia and leukemic systemic mastocytosis.

Pancreatic pseudocyst: a complication of necrotizing vaculitis (polyarteritis nodosa).

Pancreatic pseudocyst formation leading to fatal outcome was observed during the active phase of polyarteritis nodosa in a 48-year-old patient. Persistent hepatitis B antigenemia and high levels of circulating immune complexes were present during his illness. Prednisone and azathioprine therapy was not able to control the manifestations of the basic disorder.

Multifocal malignant hemangioendothelioma presenting as acute hepatitis. A clinicopathologic study.

A patient with malignant hemangioendothelioma of the liver is described. The patient's clinical presentation and course were that of fulminant hepatic necrosis. Complications included upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, abnormal coagulation parameters and the hepatorenal syndrome. The duration of the illness from the onsetof symptoms to its fatal outcome was five weeks.

Endocrine emergencies.

Several potentially fatal endocrine emergencies in relation to obstetrics and gynecology are discussed in the article. Rates of case fatality vary in different series, but range from 10% to 30%. Rapid recognition, prompt supportive care, and intervention likely maximize maternal and fetal outcomes.
