Previous research using a conditioned-attention paradigm demonstrated that 4-month-old infants of depressed mothers (a) failed to acquire associations when a segment of their mothers' infant-directed (ID) speech signaled the presentation of a smiling face but (b) did acquire associations when a segment of an unfamiliar nondepressed mother's ID speech signaled the face (P. S. Kaplan, J. -A. Bachorowski, M. J. Smoski, & W. J. Hudenko, 2002). In the present study, 5- to 13-month-old infants of depressed mothers failed to acquire associations when either their own mothers' (Experiment 1) or an unf

Every year, more than 400,000 infants are born to mothers who are depressed, which makes perinatal depression the most underdiagnosed obstetric complication in America. Postpartum depression leads to increased costs of medical care, inappropriate medical care, child abuse and neglect, discontinuation of breastfeeding, and family dysfunction and adversely affects early brain development. Pediatric practices, as medical homes, can establish a system to implement postpartum depression screening and to identify and use community resources for the treatment and referral of the depressed mother and

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been paid to family-wide repercussions of a child's celiac disease diagnosis and concomitant gluten-free diet management.
AIMS: We quantitatively and qualitatively describe positive and negative family-wide effects of a child's celiac disease diagnosis and disease management.
METHODS: We interviewed 16 families with at least one child currently following a gluten-free diet, with a biopsy-confirmed celiac disease diagnosis ≥ 1 year prior. Mothers and fathers independently rated child's dietary adherence, concern about child's health status, burden in caring fo

BACKGROUND: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to determine if oppositional defiant behavior (ODB) toward adults and oppositional defiant behavior toward other children were constructs distinct from each other as well as from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-hyperactivity/impulsivity (ADHD-HI), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattention (ADHD-IN), and academic competence.
METHODS: Mothers and fathers rated the occurrence of the DSM-IV oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms where the target was an adult (e.g., argues with adults) and the ODD symptoms where the

BACKGROUND: The Parent-Child Relationship plays a crucial role in the development of adolescents' psychological behaviors. Previous studies have confirmed its association with adolescents' cognitive development, academic performance, and emotional regulation, and have identified gender differences in this association. However, current research lacks a systematic integrated analysis of multi-dimensional variables such as physical-psychological-social adaptation. It also fails to identify the heterogeneity of the Parent-Child Relationship from a gender perspective and has not conducted in-depth

INTRODUCTION: While peer abuse or physical violence in school is emphasized more, the physical and emotional violence caused by school staff has been emphasized less. The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables related to emotional and physical violence that students are exposed to in the school environment.
METHODS: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted by applying a questionnaire to 434 fifth-grade students receiving education in the primary schools in Konak district of Izmir province. Being prepared by the researchers of this study, the questionnaire consi

Girls growing up in homes without their biological fathers tend to go through puberty earlier than their peers. Whereas evolutionary theories of socialization propose that this relation is causal, it could arise from environmental or genetic confounds. To distinguish between these competing explanations, the authors used a genetically and environmentally controlled sibling comparison design to examine the effects of differential exposure to family disruption/father absence in a community sample of sister pairs. As specified by evolutionary causal theories, younger sisters had earlier menarche

BACKGROUND: We introduce and apply an elegant, contrastive genetic-epidemiological design - Maternal Half-Sibling Families with Discordant Fathers - to clarify cross-generational transmission of genetic risk to alcohol use disorder (AUD), drug abuse (DA) and major depression (MD).
METHOD: Using Swedish national registries, we identified 73 108 eligible pairs of reared together maternal half-siblings and selected those whose biological fathers were discordant for AUD, DA and MD, and had minimal contact with the affected father. We examined differences in outcome in half-siblings with an affect

BACKGROUND: The influence of family factors on the development and/or on maintenance of heroin addiction still remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate family factors, which might be associated with heroin addiction in a sample of male individuals.
METHODS: A group of 40 heroin addicts' families was compared with a group of 17 families with a member presenting schizophrenia and a group of 27 families with mentally healthy members in regard to (1) parents' rejection attitudes toward their adult child, (2) quality of parental bond, as perceived by the adult child,

When individuals grow up with autonomy-thwarting parents, they may be prevented from exploring internally endorsed values and identities and as a result shut out aspects of the self perceived to be unacceptable. Given the stigmatization of homosexuality, individuals perceiving low autonomy support from parents may be especially motivated to conceal same-sex sexual attraction, leading to defensive processes such as reaction formation. Four studies tested a model wherein perceived parental autonomy support is associated with lower discrepancies between self-reported sexual orientation and implic

BACKGROUND: Autistic children are prone to experience heightened levels of distress and physiological reactivity to a range of sensory, social, and emotional stimuli. In line with this, multiple studies have demonstrated that autistic children have higher acute cortisol stress responses to adverse or threatening stimuli and altered cortisol awakening responses. However, few studies have examined whether this sensitivity may relate to heightened levels of chronic stress and persistently elevated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. The measurement of cortisol accumulation in hair

Adolescent first-episode psychosis may combine schizophrenia-spectrum, affective, trauma-related, and developmental features, and Capgras syndrome is uncommon in this age group. We report a confidentially de-identified case of a 16-year-old female high-school student with no previous psychiatric admission or known substance use who developed severe insomnia, reduced self-care, external auditory hallucinations, paranoid and referential ideation, Capgras-type misidentification of her father, and a multithemed bizarre delusional system after cumulative psychosocial stressors including earthquake-

PURPOSE: Natural dizygotic twinning (DZT) results from hyper-ovulation and is an indicator of female fertility. However, some traits linked to DZ twinning are also associated with infertility. We examined the relationship between DZT and female (in)fertility using recent GWAS findings.
METHODS: We investigated the genetic architecture of DZT and compared polygenic scores (PGS) for DZT between mothers of naturally conceived DZ twin pregnancies and mothers who required fertility treatments (MAR) in the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) and the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoB

BACKGROUND: Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a developmental defect of decreased enamel mineral density, involving at least one first permanent molar and frequently, permanent incisors. The defects are demarcated and opaque, varying from white, yellow, and/or brown lesions to having post-eruptive enamel breakdown, with various clinical consequences. Mexican population studies have reported prevalence between 6.8 and 37.7%.
AIM: To determine the prevalence, distribution and associated factors of MIH in Mexican schoolchildren aged 6-13 years from Pachuca, Mexico.

<p>Introduction: Coenzyme Q8B (COQ8B) nephropathy is an autosomal recessive hereditary disorder caused by primary coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) deficiency. It manifests as a genetic steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS), typically of childhood-onset. CoQ10 supplementation is a treatment option; however, it is not always effective in an entire patient population, leading to end-stage kidney disease. Kidney transplantation (KTx) is an effective treatment option for genetic SRNS; however, living KTx within biologically related members is associated with increased risk of allograft failure in recipie

Human movement behaviour typically unfolds in 24-h cycles, with children being additionally influenced by their parents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the adherence of 3-10-year-old children to the World Health Organization's (WHO) 24-h movement behaviour guidelines in relation to the behaviours of their mothers/fathers. Data from the Czech cross-sectional FAMIly Physical Activity, Sedentary behaviour and Sleep study included 381 families (with at least one child aged 3-10 years) from urban and rural areas across all three regions of Czechia. Twenty four-hour movement beh

INTRODUCTION: Earthquakes are natural disasters that can have significant psychological impacts on individuals, particularly children. While physical injuries are often the immediate focus following an earthquake, the psychological effects can be long-lasting and profound. Understanding the psychiatric effects of traumatic experiences in children following earthquakes is crucial for developing effective interventions and support systems.
METHOD: One hundred fifty three children and adolescents who experienced the earthquake were evaluated in the first year of the earthquake. Depression, anxie

BACKGROUND: In the new integrated program of care for childhood overweight and obesity (ICCO), a Youth Health Care (YHC) nurse has the role of a coordinating professional. After a broad assessment of strengths and weaknesses in the family setting, this coordinating professional makes a plan of action with the child and parents and involves other professionals when needed. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of parents and children with the coordinating professional in the ICCO.
MATERIAL & METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight families. Interview data w

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a preventative, economical method for infants with low birth weight (LBW). KMC benefits LBW infants in a number of ways. This review standpoints the effect of KMC on the weight gain of LBW neonates. KMC also improves breastfeeding rates during the hospital stay as well as at home. KMC can be provided not only by mothers but also by fathers and other adults in the family. However, it is not routinely practiced in hospitals. Short-term and long-term KMC is beneficial for survival, neurodevelopment, breastfeeding, and mother-infant bonding. Preterm infants are more l
