The lived experience of resilience in families of children with cancer: a meta-aggregative synthesis of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer imposes substantial psychological, social, and practical challenges on families, often disrupting emotional stability, caregiving roles, financial security, and family functioning. Family resilience has increasingly been recognized as a dynamic process that supports adaptation under prolonged adversity. However, qualitative evidence regarding how families develop and sustain resilience in the context of childhood cancer remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative systematic review aimed to synthesize existing qualitative evidence on family resilience among fam

Using mixed methods to establish tobacco treatment acceptability from the perspective of clients and clinicians of antenatal substance use services.

BACKGROUND: Up to 95% of pregnant women with alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems also smoke tobacco. Challenging psychosocial circumstances and a lack of targeted tobacco interventions contribute to low rates of prenatal abstinence and more effective treatment strategies are required. This study explores smoking in pregnant clients of AOD treatment services from a consumer and healthcare provider perspective to examine characteristics of behaviour change and the acceptability of evidence-based tobacco treatment strategies. Outcomes will support the design and implementation of a comprehensiv

Financial Capability: Clinicians' Assessment of Beneficiaries With Dual Diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with mental health disorders whose ability to work is sufficiently impeded are entitled to financial supports from the Social Security Administration. Beneficiaries determined to be incapable of managing these funds are supposed to be assigned a representative payee to assist beneficiaries in meeting their needs. However, patterns of payee assignment suggest that payee assignment is impacted by factors other than those the Social Security Administration instructs clinicians to consider. In this study, we tested the association between clinicians' judgments of their clients' f…

Estimating the costs of informal care for individuals with brain health disorders from 2000 to 2021: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of brain health disorders worldwide leads to large social and economic costs. A large and growing cost of brain health disorders is the time spent by caregivers providing informal (unpaid) care. The objective of this study was to estimate the financial impact of informal caregiving for 24 brain health disorders from 2000 to 2021. METHODS: In this global modelling study, we estimated hours of unpaid caregiving, lost hours of work, and associated forgone earnings for 24 brain disorders across 204 countries from 2000 to 2021. We estimated unpaid care time for each

"After Surgery, I Filed for Bankruptcy."The Financial Ramifications of Unexpected Surgery for Upper Extremity Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injuries of the upper extremity and hand (UE) can result in notable financial ramifications particularly if they involve surgical intervention. Although most studies in orthopaedics address direct costs, little is known about the personal experience with financial distress following UE trauma surgery. METHODS: Fourteen patients, identified as having markedly high financial distress using self-reported validated surveys, who received UE trauma surgery were interviewed. Semistructured interviews were conducted until thematic saturation was achieved after sequential themati

Opinions of Health Care Personnel Regarding Disincentives and Incentives for Living Kidney Donation at a Single Center.

BACKGROUND: Transplant societies continue to actively concentrate on increasing rates of living kidney donation (LKD) to bridge the gap between individuals awaiting transplantation and the number of kidneys available. A widely discussed strategy to increase living donation rates is the provision of incentives and removal of disincentives. Though opinions of the public regarding this strategy have been studied, the opinions of health care providers, including younger professionals, are less clear. We studied the opinions of medical students and other health care providers on strategies to incre

A Latent Class Analysis of Gambling Activity Patterns in a Canadian University Sample of Emerging Adults: Socio-demographic, Motivational, and Mental Health Correlates.

This analysis of gambling habits of Canadian university students (ages 18-25) dovetails two recent developments in the field of gambling studies. First, the popularity of latent class analysis to identify heterogeneous classes of gambling patterns in different populations; second, the validation of the Gambling Motives Questionnaire (with financial motives) among university students-specifically to understand both how and why emerging adults gamble. Our results support a four-class model of gambling activity patterns, consisting of female-preponderant casual and chance-based gambling groups, a

A prospective multicenter feasibility study of a miniaturized implantable continuous flow ventricular assist device in smaller children with heart failure.

BACKGROUND: There is no FDA-approved left ventricular assist device (LVAD) for smaller children permitting routine hospital discharge. Smaller children supported with LVADs typically remain hospitalized for months awaiting heart transplant-a major burden for families and a challenge for hospitals. We describe the initial outcomes of the Jarvik 2015, a miniaturized implantable continuous flow LVAD, in the NHLBI-funded Pumps for Kids, Infants, and Neonates (PumpKIN) study, for bridge-to-heart transplant. METHODS: Children weighing 8 to 30 kg with severe systolic heart failure and failing optima

A simplified guide to best practice in transanal irrigation: rationale, development and implementation.

Bowel dysfunction is widespread, and disorders including constipation and faecal incontinence can have profound impacts on physical health and psychosocial wellbeing, with a consequent financial burden on the wider healthcare system. Transanal irrigation (TAI) is a safe and effective treatment for chronic bowel dysfunction, but access to appropriate care is often delayed due to stigma, unclear treatment pathways or knowledge gaps among healthcare professionals (HCPs). An expert working group developed new guidance to empower HCPs with increased clinical confidence in appropriately implementing

Hispanic culture and family care of Alzheimer's patients.

Caring for Alzheimer's patients places tremendous burdens and strain on families. This study examined the ways cultural values and norms influence the experiences of Hispanic caregivers. The results revealed relationships between attitudes toward caregiving and a sense of burden and depression among the caregivers, with depression being related to stronger adherence to norms of filial support. Factors associated with increased burden include lack of time for oneself, dependency needs of the patient, and belief that one could be doing a better job as caregiver. Problems common to other groups o
