Innovations in global dentifrice technology: an advanced stannous-containing sodium fluoride dentifrice.

PURPOSE: Despite oral health improvements in many geographies, the prevalence of oral concerns, including caries, gingivitis, dentin hypersensitivity, breath malodor, calculus, and extrinsic staining remains unacceptably high across the globe. Dentifrice offers a convenient and accessible vehicle to deliver ingredients--such as antimicrobials, fluoride, and esthetic-enhancing agents--to treat a broad range of common oral conditions. Recently, a novel stannous-containing sodium fluoride (1450 ppm F-) dentifrice was introduced that has been tested in the lab and/or clinically in diverse geograph

Fluoride incidence in groundwater: a case study from Talupula, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Fluoride-rich groundwater is well known in granite aquifers in India and the world. This study examines the fluoride content of well water in different parts of Talupula area of Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. It also focuses on fluorides and their relationship to water-quality parameters and their impacts on humans through groundwater resources. Most parts of the area covered in this region are inherently enriched with fluorides threatening several ecosystems. The fluoride concentration ranges between 0.78 and 6.10 mg L⁻¹. The alkaline pH and high bicarbonate are responsible for release o

Fluoride-induced oxidative stress in three-dimensional culture of OS732 cells and rats.

Exposure to excessive fluoride poses a threat to human health, including increased susceptibility to developing the skeletal fluorosis. Despite its recognized importance as an endemic disease, little is known about how fluoride directly impacts on osteoblasts. We previously reported that fluoride-stimulating monolayer-cultured osteoblast proliferation or inhibiting cell viability depended on fluoride-exposure concentration and period, both accompanied with active oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to provide extra insight into skeletal fluorosis by comparing their regulation of ox

Elevation of PTH and PTHrp induced by excessive fluoride in rats on a calcium-deficient diet.

Study on the role of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrp) in the process of skeletal fluorosis, involved especially in calcium deficiency, is rare. We evaluated the level of serum PTH and mRNA expression of PTHrp in femur when rats were exposed to excessive fluoride with low-calcium diet. Wistar rats (n = 60) was divided into four groups, a control group, fluoride group, low-calcium group, and low-calcium fluoride group. The fluoride groups were treated with fluoride by drinking tap water containing 100 mg F-/L. The low-calcium diet contained 0.05% calcium.

Fluorescent boron bis(phenolate) with association response to chloride and dissociation response to fluoride.

Addition of chloride ions to boron bis(phenolate) 5 in dichloromethane solution produces a selective fluorescence decrease. The fluorescence change is believed to be caused by associative hydrogen bonding between the chloride ion and two boronic acid groups. While addition of fluoride ions to bis(phenolate) 5 generates a purple colorimetric response, the colorimetric response is caused by fluoride induced B-O bond cleavage and air oxidation of the phenolate anion formed by this dissociation.

Fluoride ion complexation by a B(2)/Hg heteronuclear tridentate Lewis acid.

The reaction of [Li(THF)(4)][1,8-mu-(Mes(2)B)C(10)H(6)] with HgCl(2) affords [1,1'-(Hg)-[8-(Mes(2)B)C(10)H(6)](2)] () or [1-(ClHg)-8-(Mes(2)B)C(10)H(6)] (), depending on the stoichiometry of the reagents. These two new compounds have been characterized by (1)H, (13)C, (11)B and (199)Hg NMR, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. The cyclic voltammogram of in THF shows two distinct waves observed at E(1/2) -2.31 V and -2.61 V, corresponding to the sequential reductions of the two boron centers. Fluoride titration experiments monitored by electrochemistry suggest that binds tightly to one

Fluoride availability from natural resources in The Gambia--implications for oral health care.

INTRODUCTION: Changing food patterns in combination with ineffective oral hygiene measures and insufficient bioavailability of fluoride from drinking water and other sources seem to impair the dental health status in developing countries, especially in the younger population. Therefore, preventive programmes in controlling dental caries progression should be based on local conditions. METHODS: For mapping the drinking water fluoride content throughout The Gambia, samples of water from rural community wells, public water taps, commercial mineral water, and from the Gambia-River were measured.

An electrochemical method for fluoride analysis based on a naphthalene urea derivative as a selective receptor.

The use of a naphthalene urea derivative as a host molecule for selective fluoride binding allows us to develop a highly selective and sensitive electrochemical method for fluoride analysis without the interference of other halogen atoms. All the parameters affecting the differential pulse voltammetric response of the host molecule used as a fluoride receptor have been optimized and the mechanisms of the electrochemical behavior have been elucidated. The inhibition in the electrochemical signal of the anionic receptor due to the increase of the fluoride amounts allows the determination of F-wi

The effect of fluoride administration on rat serum osteocalcin expression during orthodontic movement.

INTRODUCTION: Osteocalcin is a bone protein that has been used to mark bone turnover. The precise role of this protein in bone remodeling has not been fully elucidated; however, it was shown to be instrumental in the activation of osteoclastic bone resorption via its effect on osteoblasts. Fluoride influences bone growth by acting as a mitogenic agent for osteoblasts. In this study, we used a rodent model to determine the effects of fluoride administration on systemic osteocalcin during orthodontic tooth movement. METHODS: Thirty-two 8-week-old female Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. T

Formation of hydrogen fluoride by gamma and beta sterilisation in medical devices containing perfluoroheptane.

Infusion of hexadecafluoroheptane, a liquid perfluorocarbon released from repaired Althane dialysers was found to be the most probable reason for the deaths of 53 dialysis patients reported in the year 2001. This study focuses on toxic decomposition products generated due to gamma and beta sterilisation of hexadecafluoroheptane. The responsible dialysers were sterilised with a maximum dose of 45 kGy gamma irradiation. We investigated the influence of both 20-500 kGy gamma and beta irradiation on perfluoroheptane. Analysis of the irradiated samples verified the decomposition of perfluoroheptane

18F-Fluoride positron emission tomography and positron emission tomography/computed tomography.

(18)F-Fluoride is a positron-emitting bone-seeking agent, the uptake of which reflects blood flow and remodeling of bone. Assessment of (18)F-fluoride kinetics using quantitative positron emission tomography (PET) methods allows the regional characterization of lesions of metabolic bone diseases and the monitoring of their response to therapy. It also enables the assessment of bone viability and discrimination of uneventful and impaired healing processes of fractures, bone grafts and osteonecrosis. Taking advantage of the favorable pharmacokinetic properties of the tracer combined with the hig

Potential exposure and risk of fluoride intakes from tea drinks produced in Taiwan.

Tea is the second most commonly consumed drink in the world. Excess fluoride intakes from tea drinks may cause health effects. This work assesses infusible fluoride levels in popular tea sold in Taiwan and evaluates potential exposure factors. Lungjing, pouchong, tienguanyin, oolong, pureh, and black tea specimens were purchased from different counties in Taiwan. Fluoride levels were evaluated in one complete cycle of tea making as well as at different calcium carbonate contents in water, with glass or porcelain teapots, and with/without adding sugar. Oolong tea leaves in each manufacturing st

Assessment of fluoride concentration and daily intake by human from tea and herbal infusions.

The fluoride content in infusions of commercially available black, green, oolong, pu-erh and white teas was determined by ion-selective electrode. Herbal infusions as well as instant tea and ready-to-drink tea beverages were also examined. It is found that brewing time (5, 10 and 30 min) does increase the fluoride content, which in infusions of black tea (5 min brewing) was higher than that in the other types of tea, with contents ranging between 0.32 and 4.54 mg/l for black tea to 0.37-0.54 mg/l for white tea and with even lower values for herbal tea infusions of 0.02-0.09 mg/l. On the basis

Corrosion resistance of three orthodontic brackets: a comparative study of three fluoride mouthwashes.

In the present study, three types of orthodontic brackets were investigated: cobalt-chromium (CoCr), iron-chromium-nickel (FeCrNi) and titanium (Ti) based. Their corrosion resistance was compared with that of platinum (Pt), which was chosen as the reference material because of its excellent electrochemical properties. The test solutions were Elmex, Meridol and Acorea fluoride mouthwashes. Fusayama Meyer artificial saliva was used as the reference solution. The corrosion resistance of the different brackets in the three mouthwashes was assessed electrochemically to determine the corrosion poten

Fluoride ingestion from toothpaste: background to European Union-funded multicentre project.

As in most other established market economies throughout the world the prevalence of dental caries has declined in most Member States of the European Union (EU). There is evidence that the increased use of fluoride toothpaste has been a major factor in this improvement. Recently there has been increasing debate on the alleged link between increased use of fluoride toothpaste, particularly by infants and young children, and increased levels of enamel fluorosis. Central to these discussions are two issues, namely measurement of the amount of fluoride ingested by infants and young children and me

Fluoride and strontium accumulation in bone does not correlate with osteoid tissue in dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Osteomalacia is now a rare disease in dialysis patients in developed countries since the withdrawal of aluminium overload. The involvement of fluoride and strontium in the pathogenesis of the disease has been suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between osteomalacia in dialysis patients and the fluoride or strontium contents of bone. METHODS: Of 271 bone biopsies from chronic haemodialysis patients referred to our centre, we studied the nine biopsies from patients with osteomalacia. They were compared with 23 biopsies from patients with hyperp
