[Intrathoracic Migration of a Kirschner Wire Successfully Removed by Video-assisted Thoracic Surgery:Report of a Case].

A 40-year-old man who had been surgically treated for the fracture of the right humerus with two Kirschner wires (K-wires) complained of chest pain and difficulty in breathing at fourth day after surgery and visited our hospital. Chest radiography revealed dislocation of the K-wire and right pneumothorax. Video-assisted thoracic surgery( VATS) was performed immediately, and the K-wire was removed safely.

Removal of Unusual Foreign Metal Object (Nail) from the Right Ventricle of Human Heart: A Case Report.

Migration of foreign bodies (FB) with the blood flow to the heart is a rare, but very alarming condition as it may lead to life-threatening complications and death. Objects that are larger than 5 mm in diameter and/or irregular in shape are recommended for removal from extra- and intracardiac areas to prevent incurable embolization. Surgical extraction of intracardiac objects is a serious surgical challenge associated with difficulties to operate, during the continuous movement of the heart, and identify the exact FB location. Early diagnosis and timely removal of FBs are crucial treatment fac

Assessment of Silicone Particle Migration Among Women Undergoing Removal or Revision of Silicone Breast Implants in the Netherlands.

IMPORTANCE: Silicone breast implants have been on the market for breast augmentation or breast reconstruction for approximately 60 years but may lead to medical complications, also called breast implant illness. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the existence of silicone gel bleed and migration over a long time period, including the period in which the newer cohesive silicone gel breast implants were used. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this single-center case series, capsule tissue and lymph node samples were collected from women who underwent removal or revision of silicone breast implants fro

Management of inferior dislocation of a StopLoss Jones tube after conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy.

Persistent epiphora significantly worsens one's quality of life. A commonly known method of treatment of complete obstruction of the lacrimal canaliculi is conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy with placement of a glass Jones tube. Unfortunately, the use of such a prosthesis of the lacrimal tract often results in certain complications, the most frequent of which include extrusion or superior and inferior migration. For the last several years, a modified version of the Jones tube-the StopLoss Jones tube (SLJT)-has been available. It almost eliminates the possibility of extrusion. However, inferior m

Bone Causing Abdominal Groans.

Gastrointestinal complications secondary to fish bone ingestion are rare, however important to recognize in timely manner to prevent morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis is often challenging in setting of non-specific and variable symptoms and lack of history of fish bone ingestion. Diagnostic imaging particularly computed tomography is crucial for diagnosis. However, emphasis should be given on identifying underlying cause of abdominal complications because fish bone is often missed unless specifically looked for. Identification of fish bone is essential for extraction of the inciting nidus. Em

Hepatic Abscess Induced by Fish Bone Migration: Two Case Reports.

Although foreign body ingestion is a common occurrence, perforation and penetration of the gastrointestinal tract is unusual and the development of a hepatic abscess is even more rare. The authors describe two cases of fish bone perforation of the gastrointestinal tract with hepatic perforation and abscess formation, from distinctive age groups and varying presentation, although both developed septic shock. The lack of history of ingestion of foreign bodies, non-specificity of both clinical presentation and complementary examinations all play a role in delaying the diagnosis and therefore in t

Unusual migration of a Kirschner wire in a patient with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A case report.

RATIONALE: Kirschner wires (K-wires) are the most commonly used implants in orthopedic surgery. Although complications are not uncommon, they are mostly benign in nature and easily managed. While migration of K-wires is a rare complication, fatal outcomes have been reported. A review of the literature showed that only 7 cases of wire migration in the hip and pelvic region have been reported. Only 2 occurred in the pediatric population. Although K-wires are routinely used in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) patients, there has been no report of complications in this vulnerable patient population.

[Intrauterine device: about a rare complication and literature review].

The intrauterine device (IUD) is the most common contraceptive method used in the world. Transuterine migration is a rare complication, accounting for 1/350 - 1/10000 insertions in the literature. We report the case of a 40-year old patient, who had had an IUD insertion 12-year before, presenting with pelvic and right lower back pain associated with intermittent hematuria and burning during urination. Radiological assessment showed calcific deposits on intra bladder IUD. The patient underwent cystostomy, without any difficulty, allowing stone and IUD extraction. A urinary catheter was left in

Hemiballismus as a complication of an intratumoral chemotherapy catheter.

We report an unusual case of delayed bilateral, right greater than left hemiballismus in a 15-year-old female patient with a history of a craniopharyngioma 2years following the insertion of a right intratumoral chemotherapy catheter. Following cyst decompression, the catheter was found to have changed position, traversing the basal ganglia structures, namely the right subthalamic nucleus. Her movement disorder near-completely resolved immediately following removal of the catheter. A review of the current literature and proposed pathophysiological mechanisms are discussed.

[Recurrent Hiccups Caused by Malposition of the Peritoneal Catheter of a Lumboperitoneal Shunt: A Case Report].

A number of rare and unpredictable shunt-related complications after shunt placement to treat hydrocephalus have been described. Here a 78-year-old man who underwent lumboperitoneal (LP) shunt placement presented postoperatively with recurrent hiccups. Abdominal radiography and computed tomography performed at 7 days postoperative revealed that a peritoneal catheter had migrated into the upper abdominal cavity and contacted the diaphragm. The patient underwent LP shunt revision, during which the catheter was pulled back and repositioned within the lower abdominal cavity. The hiccups ceased com

Migrating bullet in the thecal sac at the level of the conus medullaris without neurological deficit.

Bullets can lodge in the organs, blood vessels or thecal sac. To our knowledge, a migrating bullet at the level of the conus medullaris without neurological deficit has never been reported. We present our patient along with a discussion of bullet migration in the spinal canal and its mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment. A 29-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department due to a gunshot wound in the right upper quadrant of his abdomen. He had no neurological deficit. Spinal CT scan and plain radiography showed the bullet had passed through the L2 vertebral body and had migrated downwar

Migration of a Kirschner wire to the dorsolateral side of the foot following osteosynthesis of a patella fracture with tension band wiring: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Patella fractures represent 1 % of all musculoskeletal system fractures. Fixation of patellar fractures using open reduction and tension band wiring is a commonly used and successful surgical fixation method. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old male patient from Turkey presented to our clinic with complaints of palpable foreign bodies under the skin on the dorsolateral side of his right foot. Except for the palpable and moving body of about 6 cm length under the skin in his foot, he had no functional complaints. On X-ray, a Kirschner wire was visible in front of the lateral malleolus

Screw migration in a 14-year-old boy with hip osteotomy; a rare cause of upper thigh hematoma.

Soft tissue injury due to orthopedic hardware migration is an uncommon complication. However particularly patients who have routine physical therapy sessions for extremity contractures are at risk for vascular injury in the setting of migrated screws. Ultrasound is an efficient modality to evaluate migrated screws and adjacent soft tissue structures. As a consequence of repetitive trauma a migrated screw would eventually result in injury. Herein a case of upper thigh hematoma due to screw migration in a patient with hip osteotomy is reported.

[No visible strings during an IUD check-up].

BACKGROUND: When there are no strings visible during an IUD (intrauterine device) check-up and ultrasound does not show an IUD in the uterine cavity, expulsion is commonly assumed. If the patient has abdominal pain further investigation is advised. This case shows that this policy does not cover every eventuality. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient is a 32-year-old gravida 2, para 2. One month after IUD insertion she developed abdominal pain. The strings of the IUD were not visible with a speculum and ultrasound revealed an empty uterine cavity. Over the next few years the abdominal pain decreased
