Endoscopic agger nasi type Draf IIb treatment for frontal sinus lesions.

Treatment of frontal sinus using surgery is complicated owing to the complex anatomical structure of the sinus region. The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of Draf IIb endoscopic frontal sinus surgery treatment for frontal sinus lesions using the agger nasi approach on 19 patients (28 left or and right nasal cavities). A 10-12 mm excision of the upper frontal maxilla was performed for endoscopic resection between the middle turbinate and lateral nasal wall. No serious complications in frontal sinus surgery treatment for the removal of the frontal sinus were o

[Frontal ethmoid metastases of prostatic carcinoma. Report of one case and review of the literature].

Prostatic metastases in the nose and paranasal sinuses are rare. Less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature. Kidney are the commonest site of primary tumour, followed by lung and breast. Only 10 cases have previously been reported in the world literature. Prostatic metastases have been mainly reported in the sphenoid sinus. This paper reports one case of metastases of prostatic carcinoma in the fronto-ethmoid sinus in a 72 years old male. The clinical picture includes acute fronto-ethmoid right sinusitis, severe exophthalmos and chemosis. The CT scan showed extensive soft tissue

A case of primary meningioma of the frontal sinus.

A case of right frontal sinus tumor which at histology turned out to be a psammomatous meningioma is reported. The occurrence of primary meningiomas within the paranasal sinuses is rare and probably related to the transformation of embryonic arachnoid cell remnants or ectopic meningocytes derived from pluripotential mesenchymal cells. A search of the literature disclosed 30 further cases of meningiomas primarily involving the paranasal sinuses: a short analysis of the latters is presented and some of the distinctive features of these unusual tumors, as compared to their intracranial counterpar

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis: report of two cases.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis developed in two poorly controlled diabetic patients with clinical manifestations of frontal headache, ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, proptosis, epistaxis and facial numbness. Early computed tomography (CT) of the head revealed fluid accumulation in paranasal sinuses. The diagnosis of this disease relied upon CT of the head, and biopsy or culture of the mucosa of sinuses. Remarkable improvement was noted following prompt surgical debridement and amphotericin-B therapy. We conclude that early diagnosis and aggressive treatment is the only way to save patient's life.

Pneumosinus dilatans and multiplex: report of three rare cases and review of the literature.

Pneumosinus dilatans is a term used to describe a localized abnormal dilatation of one or more paranasal sinuses without radiological evidence of localized bone destruction, hyperostosis or mucous membrane thickening. The involvement of all paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells has been named pneumosinus dilatans multiplex. Although the involvement of one or more paranasal sinuses has been reported widely, all paranasal sinuses and the concomitant involvement of mastoid air cells has been reported in only one case. Herein, we present three unusual cases of pneumosinus dilatans (one is a seco

Changes in paranasal sinus abnormalities found incidentally on MRI.

Abnormal opacification of paranasal sinuses on brain MRI was studied in 178 consecutive adult patients who underwent two examinations separated by at least 4 months because of suspected neurological disease. Sinus abnormality was present in 79 (44%) patients; in 60% the abnormality involved two or more sinuses and it was bilateral in 51%. The most frequently abnormal sinus was the maxillary (46%), followed by the ethmoid (32%), sphenoid (16%), and frontal sinuses (6%). Interval occurrence or complete resolution of abnormalities was observed in 52% of patients (66% of the sinuses). In the remai

MRI of the paranasal sinuses: incidental abnormalities and their relationship to symptoms.

Magnetic resonance imaging is able to demonstrate a wide range of sinus abnormalities. Incidental findings in patients referred for neuroradiology because of suspected intracranial pathology are surprisingly common and were present in 37.5 per cent of 483 images examined. The maxillary and ethmoid sinuses were most commonly affected with 27 and 26 per cent of images abnormal whereas the frontal and sphenoid sinuses were less commonly affected with 5 per cent of each abnormal. If minor changes were excluded then 17 per cent of patients had either fluid, a polyp or marked mucosal thickening in a

Malignant mucosal melanoma of paranasal sinuses: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Mucosal melanoma of paranasal sinuses is a rare disease with a challenging treatment and a poor prognosis. In this paper, we reported the successful multimodality treatment of malignant mucosal melanoma of frontal sinus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old female presented with a frequent nosebleed for one month before admission. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass in the right frontal and ethmoidal sinuses with adjacent bone erosion and right orbit invasion. Biopsy revealed malignant melanoma. No metastasis was found. The definitive diagnosis was malig

Haemangioma of the frontal sinus.

A 71-year-old lady underwent successful excision of a haemangioma of the frontal sinus, via an osteoplastic flap approach. Haemangioma of the paranasal sinuses is an extreme rarity. A case is presented and the literature reviewed.

Fusobacterium brain abscess as a complication of sinusitis in an immunocompetent adolescent: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses are uncommon intracranial infections with an estimated incidence of 0.5 per 100000 individuals. Among bacterial … ed. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral frontal and left temporal subdural abscesses with frontal sinusitis. Pus obtained during burr-hole drainage underwent conventional culture and broad-range 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing (NGS) to identify the pathogen. Initial aerobic and anaerobic cultures were sterile. NGS identified Fusobacterium nucleatum as …
