Distinct Yet Coordinated: Pattern of Leaf and Root Fungal Endophyte Communities in an Alpine Meadow.

Leaf and root fungal endophytes (LFEs and RFEs) represent essential yet distinct components of the plant holobiont, but their ecological relationships remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the community structure of LFE and RFE across 45 plant species in an alpine meadow ecosystem using high-throughput sequencing. We found that the richness of RFEs was significantly higher than that of LFEs whereas their diversity showed no significant difference. The community composition of RFEs significantly differed with LFE communities and indicator analysis revealed that Aureobasidium, Didymell

Comparative transcriptomics of CAZy enzymes in white- and brown-rot agaricomycetes: Evolutionary insights into lignocellulose degradation and the relevance of GH16 glycoside hydrolase functional divergence.

White-rot and brown-rot fungi (WRF and BRF, respectively) decompose lignocellulose, the main structural component of plant biomass, through distinct mechanisms. This study examines the transcriptomic responses of three WRF species (Pleurotus ostreatus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and Heterobasidion irregulare) and two BRF species (Fomitopsis schrenkii and Rhodonia placenta) grown on poplar wood (W) and glucose (G) as sole carbon sources. RNA-seq analysis revealed upregulation of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) linked to lignocellulose degradation. WRF displayed a broader enzymatic reper

Aspergillus fumigatus-Host Interactions Mediating Airway Wall Remodelling in Asthma.

Asthma is a chronic heterogeneous respiratory condition that is mainly associated with sensitivity to airborne agents such as pollen, dust mite products and fungi. Key pathological features include increased airway inflammation and airway wall remodelling. In particular, goblet cell hyperplasia, combined with excess mucus secretion, impairs clearance of the inhaled foreign material. Furthermore, structural changes such as subepithelial fibrosis and increased smooth muscle hypertrophy collectively contribute to deteriorating airway function and possibility of exacerbations. Current pharmacologi

Identification and biofilm development by a new fungal keratitis aetiologic agent.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, human keratitis caused by fungal plant pathogens has become more common. Biofilm is a structure that confers adaptations and virulence to fungi in keratitis. Neoscytalidium spp. are phytopathogenic and recently have been recognised as a human pathogen, using biofilm formation as a virulence factor. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was isolation, identification (at the species level) and characterisation of a new fungal keratitis agent. PATIENTS/METHODS: The fungus was isolated from a 67-year-old male patient with a corneal ulcer. Biofilm formation and structure

Mycotoxins in Basidiomycete Mycelium and Fruiting Bodies: Implications for Eu Novel Food Assessment and Selected International Regulatory Frameworks.

Advances in technology have enabled the efficient and sustainable production of basidiomycete vegetative mycelium, particularly from Pleurotus species, as a novel food source. However, mycelium has yet to receive regulatory approval in many global markets, requiring a better understanding of factors affecting its safety. Yet, various studies on different species and mycotoxins suggest that mycelium may be safer than its fruiting body. This review explores the occurrence and distribution of basidiomycete mycotoxins (BMTs) across different species and fungal structures, with a particular focus o…
