Microplastics inhibit lead binding to sediment components: Influence of surface functional groups and charge environment.

The coexistence of heavy metals and microplastics in sediments is well recognized, yet the interactions within ternary systems remain underexplored, and comprehensive studies addressing the diverse sequences of sediment-microplastic-heavy metal coexistence are lacking. In this study, we systematically investigated the interactions among lead (Pb), polystyrene (PS) microplastics, and sediments (using goethite (Goe) and goethite-humic acid composite (GH) as examples) under different coexistence orders. The presence of PS significantly inhibited Pb adsorption by both Goe and GH. For Goe, adsorpti

Sulfonamides and their transformation products in the Yellow River Delta, China: Occurrences, source apportionment, and ecological risks.

Sulfonamides (SAs) have aroused general concerns due to their extensive application and contribution to antibiotic-resistance genes. Previous studies mainly concentrated on parent SAs in the water, but little information is available about the pollution profiles and partitioning of numerous transformation products in different matrices. In this study, water and sediment samples of 64 sampling sites from the Yellow River Delta (YRD) were simultaneously investigated for 27 target SAs to explore their partitioning, spatiotemporal variations, pollution sources, and ecological risks. Twenty-six of

Changes of microbial communities in loose sediments with accumulation time in chlorinated drinking water distribution systems.

'Yellow water' issues frequently occur in drinking water supply systems on university campuses, primarily caused by the resuspension of loose sediments within pipelines, which may pose high potential microbiological risks. In order to investigate the accumulation of sediments accompanying microbiological risks in municipal pipelines, 'water + sediment' samples were collected periodically over two semesters in a university campus exhibiting divergent temperature patterns. Results indicated that sediment quantity increased rapidly within a short period; however, microbial biomass did not increas

Methylmercury in subarctic amphibians: environmental gradients, bioaccumulation, and estimated flux.

Rapid warming in polar regions is causing large changes to ecosystems, including altering environmentally available mercury (Hg). Although subarctic freshwater systems have simple vertebrate communities, Hg in amphibians remains unexplored. We measured total Hg (THg) in wetland sediments and methylmercury (MeHg) in multiple life-stages (eggs to adults) of wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) and larval boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata) from up to 25 wetlands near Churchill, Manitoba (Canada), during the summers of 2018-2019. We used egg mass counts for wood frogs from 24 wetlands (2015-2019) an

Spatial pattern and methylation process of mercury enrichment in lake sediments during glacial periods in cold and arid regions.

Underlying surface in lake watersheds and mercury concentrations in lake inflows are key factors affecting the accumulation of mercury in lake sediments. Lake characteristics play a crucial role in the process of mercury methylation in sediments. Lakes in cold regions have unique environmental features, including a long ice-cover period, during which mercury undergoes complex physicochemical processes. However, the extent of mercury accumulation and methylation in cold region lake sediments remains unclear. We studied the concentrations, pollution levels, and ecological risks of mercury and me

The role of prokaryotic mercury methylators and demethylators in Canadian Arctic thermokarst lakes.

Permafrost soils are critical reservoirs for mercury (Hg), with the thawing process leading to the release of this element into the environment, posing significant environmental risks. Of particular concern is the methylated form of mercury, monomethylmercury (MMHg), known for its adverse effects on Human health. Microbial communities play a pivotal role in the formation of MMHg by facilitating Hg methylation and in the demethylation of MMHg, slowing the crossing of toxic threshold concentration in the environment. However, the specific microbes involved still need to be understood. This study

Response of mercury methylation to algal bloom decomposition or elevated CO2 in surface sediments from the East China Sea.

Methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxin bioaccumulated in aquatic food webs, poses risks to ecosystems and human health, with marine products mainly contributing to global human MeHg exposure. The East China Sea (ECS), influenced by anthropogenic Hg inputs and environmental changes like algal boom and elevated CO2, is critical for understanding MeHg dynamics. This study investigated how algal decomposition and elevated CO2 (1000 ppm) affect Hg methylation in the ECS sediments. Surface sediments showed average MeHg concentrations of 0.291 ± 0.069 ng g-1 and a MeHg/THg ratio of 0.67 %. Input of algal

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in river stream sediment in urban area: a case study of Yogyakarta City, Indonesia.

Heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn) in river sediments from the Winongo, Code, and Gajahwong rivers in Yogyakarta City were investigated. Fifteen samples were collected from each river, systematically from upstream to downstream. Background sediment samples were collected from the furthest upstream point to reflect natural sediment conditions. Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) was performed to measure the Fe, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn concentrations in the samples. We created distribution graphs to analyze the spatial patterns from upstream to downstream of these metals.

Quantifying the sediment sorption of organic ultraviolet filter chemicals using solvophobic theory.

Hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) that enter the aquatic environment often negatively impact organisms, endangering aquatic biodiversity. Understanding sediment sorption equilibria for these chemicals can properly direct mitigation efforts. In addition, many HOCs of environmental concern lack sufficient environmental fate data to adequately assess their risk to ecosystems and humans. In this study, a sorption method addressing solvophobic effects was used to quantify the sorption of an HOC of current environmental concern, OD-PABA (padimate O, 2-ethylhexyl-4-(dimethylamino)benzoate), to a v

Properties influencing flux and diatom uptake of mercury and methylmercury from estuarine sediments.

Mercury (Hg) is a conspicuous and persistent global pollutant. Ionic Hg can be methylated into noxious methylmercury (CH3Hg), which biomagnifies in marine tropic webs and poses a health risk to humans and organisms. Sediment Hg methylation rates are variable, and the output flux of created CH3Hg are dependent on sediment characteristics and environmental factors. Thus, uncertainties remain about the formation and flux of CH3Hg from sediment, and how this could contribute to the bioaccumulative burden for coastal organisms in shallow ecosystems. Cores were collected from 3 estuarine locations a

Algal-derived dissolved organic matter accelerates mercury methylation under cyanobacterial blooms in the sediment of eutrophic lakes.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Mercury (Hg), especially in the form of methylmercury (MeHg), poses a significant threat to both organisms and the environment due to its extreme toxicity. While methylation process of Hg in sediments has been extensively studied, recognition of its associated risks and mechanisms during cyanobacterial blooms remains limited. This study investigated the distribution characteristics of Hg and MeHg in sediments of Taihu Lake, China. The concentration of Hg and MeHg varied within the range of 96.0-212.0 ng g-1 and 0.1-0.5 ng g-1, respectively. Higher ecological risks of Hg were found in algal-dom

Paleoparasitological analysis of a 15th-16th c. CE latrine from the merchant quarter of Bruges, Belgium: Evidence for local and exotic parasite infections.

Paleoparasitological studies have made important contributions to our understanding of the past epidemiology of parasites, infection in past populations and lifestyle in the past. In some cases, these ancient parasites can also provide evidence for long distance travel or migration of people in the past. Three sediment samples from a 15th–16th c. CE latrine from the Spanish nation house in Bruges, Belgium were analysed for preserved helminth eggs using microscopy. Bruges was a major trading centre in medieval Europe, thus it was home to a large merchant population with extensive trading networ

Novel insight into ammonium, phosphate, and iron(II) dynamics in the sediment porewater of a constructed wetland under artificial aeration through the diffusive equilibrium in thin films technique.

The analysis of porewater concentrations in constructed wetland sediments could help to understand biogeochemical processes, the sources and sinks of nutrients, and their effect on overlying water quality. In this study, we measured high-resolution porewater concentration profiles of ammonium (NH4+-N), nitrate (NO3N), phosphate (PO43--P), and ferrous iron (Fe(II)) in-situ in the Laratinga constructed wetland in Mount Barker (South Australia) using diffusive equilibration in thin films (DET) techniques. Measurements were taken under light and dark conditions, and non-aerated and aerated conditi

Seasonal variation in mercury and methylmercury production in vegetated sediment in the Dongtan wetlands of the Yangtze River Estuary, China.

The seasonal cycling of mercury (Hg) in vegetated sediments in the Dongtan wetlands of the Yangtze River Estuary were determined, and microcosm incubation experiments were conducted to evaluate methylmercury (MeHg) production after Hg input. The results showed that the seasonal variations of total Hg and MeHg were very different. The enhanced activity of methylating bacteria could have been the main contributor to the elevated MeHg in the upper surface layer (0-12 cm), which was supported by the higher copy numbers of the hgcA gene in the surface sediment and the MeHg increase during sediment

The decomposition of algae has a greater impact on heavy metal transformation in freshwater lake sediments than that of macrophytes.

Heavy metal (HM) pollution is a major concern in freshwater ecosystem management. The different types of endogenous organic matter and the way their decomposition affects HM transformation in freshwater lakes is not well understood. An ex situ mesocosm study was conducted to compare HM transformation in sediments during anaerobic decomposition of cyanobacterial bloom biomass (CBB) and submerged cyanobacterial vegetation in Lake Taihu, known as Potamogeton malaianus (PM). Microbial community structures were examined through Illumina sequencing of 16S rDNA. Results indicate that Zn had a remarka

Typhoon triggers estuarine heavy metal risk by regulating the multifractal grainsize of resuspended sediment.

The turbulent boundary layer generated by wind in the estuarine surface water serves as a main factor affecting the distribution of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). In this study, representative typhoon-induced variation of surface fine SPM (<63 μm) was simulated in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) under two time scenarios. Each scenario contained four grainsize SPM fractions named Fraction 1 (<8 μm), Fraction 2 (8-16 μm), Fraction 3 (16-32 μm), Fraction 4 (32-63 μm). The typhoon-induced resuspended multifractal SSC quantification (TRMSQ) based on t

Pollution characteristics of typical ARGs in the sediments of the sea area adjacent to the Yangtze Estuary, China.

The pollution characteristics of the typical antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the sediments of the sea area adjacent to the Yangtze Estuary, China were investigated with both seasonal and spatial insights. The positive rates of sulfonamides sul1, sul2, tetracycline tetW and quinolone gyrA resistance genes in the sediments of all sampling sites were 100%, indicating that the sea area adjacent to the Yangtze Estuary were extensively polluted by these ARGs. Occupying a dominance in most sampling sites, sul1 was found to be the dominant resistance gene in the sediments of the sea area adjacen

Adsorption of humic acids to lake sediments: Compositional fractionation, inhibitory effect of phosphate, and implications for lake eutrophication.

Humic acid (HA) and phosphate interactions play a vital role in the biogeochemical cycle of carbon and nutrients and thus the trophic state of a lake. The adsorption behavior of HAs to sediments in the absence and presence of phosphate was investigated in this study. Three types of HAs were used, AHA from algae-dominated lake sediments, MHA from macrophyte-dominated lake sediments, and a reference HA (RHA) with terrestrial sources. The adsorption capacity of lake sediments was highest for AHA, which can be explained by that AHA contained more carboxyl-containing molecules, proteinaceous compou

The spatial distribution and characterization of phosphorus and nitrogen in a water-carrying lake: a case study of Lake Jiaogang, China.

The sources of P and N in water-carrying lakes include exogenous input and endogenous release. However, the influence of pollution from different sources on the dynamic distribution of N and P at the sediment-water interface in water-carrying lakes remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in dynamic distribution characteristics of P compounds and N elements in Lake Jiaogang, a major water-carrying lake in eastern China. Four functional regions with different types of pollutant sources and different kinds of aquatic plants were selected to study the dist
