Detection of turner syndrome using hand X-ray using anchor based links segmentation method.

Turner Syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal disorder, wherein the female's growth is impacted. Immature ovaries, low stature, and heart abnormalities are a range of developmental and medical issues due to TS. The condition of TS might be detected prior to birth, throughout infancy or in the early years of life. The diagnosis of TS in girls with modest symptoms and indications is sometimes deferred until they reach adolescence or become young adults. This study presents an algorithm to segment the hand digital X-ray image in children with TS. In medical image and computer vision examination, image se

Results of primary extensor tendon repair of the hand with respect to the zone of injury.

BACKGROUND: Laceration of the hand extensor tendons is common in the upper extremities, causing soft tissue trauma. These tendons, because of their superficial location and lying adjacent to bones, have a greater tendency to be injured than flexor tendons. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the results of primary repairs of lacerated extensor tendons of the fingers, with respect to the zone of injury, and also whether the results are different according to the anatomical zone in which they occur. PATIENTS AND METHODS: During a period of two years and four months, 32 patients

Bone Mass, Density, Geometry, and Stress-Strain Index in Adults With Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type I and Their Associations With Physical Activity and Muscle Function Parameters.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous heritable connective tissue disorder mainly characterized by bone fragility and increased fracture risk. This study investigated bone parameters in adults with OI type I and their relationship with physical activity and muscle function parameters in comparison with controls. A total of 27 (15 women, 12 men) adults with OI type I and 27 healthy age- and sex-matched controls, with mean age 45 years (range 18-72 years), were included. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography was performed at the lower leg and forearm to

An Update on Osteoporosis Screening: Advances, Applications, and the Role of Hand Surgeons and Allied Health Providers.

Osteoporosis and osteopenia are highly prevalent and undertreated. Both are characterized by low bone mineral density and contribute to fragility fractures and their subsequent morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in diagnostic modalities and pathways have demonstrated the potential to expand screening and treatment for patients with low bone mineral density. Hand surgeons will encounter patients with osteoporosis and osteopenia regardless of whether they have sustained fragility fractures and therefore must maintain an understanding of diagnostic and management considerations. This articl

[Thumb reconstruction after amputation injuries].

Reconstruction of the thumb following amputation injuries: In this review of the different methods of thumb reconstruction following traumatic amputation, the procedures applicable in the primary care of the hand are first mentioned and demonstrated: replantation of a thumb, cover of a distal amputation with a neurovascular flap and salvage of a thumb with intermediate segmental loss. In most instances the thumb reconstruction is performed as a secondary procedure. The indication and the selection of the method depend upon the level of amputation, the dominance of the injured hand, and the pre

Isolated pisiform dislocation after a seizure episode.

A 31-year-old woman had a seizure episode three weeks before, leading to a fall on her left hand. Following the accident, she had discomfort on the ulnar side of her left wrist. She decided to seek treatment from a local bone setter; however, her hand discomfort continued and she then came to us for treatment. The radiography and computed tomography scan demonstrated a pisiform dislocation. The pisiform bone was surgically removed. The pisiform dislocation should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the ulnar side wrist discomfort following wrist trauma.

Microgeodic disease affecting the hands and feet of children.

Twenty cases of microgeodic disease affecting the hands or feet of children are presented, and the relevant literature is reviewed. Clinical features include chilblain-like appearance and tenderness of the involved digits. Radiographically patchy osteoporosis of the diaphysis and/or sclerosis of the diaphysis and rarefaction of the metaphysis with cortical erosion is evident, often accompanied by subperiosteal new bone formation. Characteristically, this condition occurs in winter and resolves spontaneously within 6 months clinically and radiographically. This lesion appears to result from vas

Triple-phase bone image abnormalities in Lyme arthritis.

Arthritis is a frequent manifestation of Lyme disease. Limited triple-phase Tc-99m MDP bone imaging of the wrists and hands with delayed whole-body images was performed in a patient with Lyme arthritis. This demonstrated abnormal joint uptake in the wrists and hands in all three phases, with increased activity seen in other affected joints on delayed whole-body images. These findings are nonspecific and have been previously described in a variety of rheumatologic conditions, but not in Lyme disease. Lyme disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of articular and periarticular

New workhorse flaps in hand reconstruction.

With the passage of time, certain hand surgery procedures are anecdotally dubbed "workhorse" techniques. These are procedures that are extremely reliable and have repeatedly demonstrated good results. However, with time, paradigms undergo shifts, and this is as true for hand surgery as any other field. In this article, we will describe the use of three new "workhorse" flaps that we have found to have reliable results in complex hand reconstruction: the pedicled radial forearm fascia flap for dorsal hand reconstruction, the free anterolateral thigh flap for mangled hand reconstruction, and the

Physical therapy management of hand fractures.

Hand fractures can be a complicated management dilemma for both the general clinician and the specialist. To better equip the therapist to treat fractures in the hand, a brief review of bone and articular cartilage healing and the effects of immobilization are reviewed. Active, passive, and resistive exercises for the patient with hand fracture are reviewed in addition to treatment of the associated problems of scar formation, edema, and pain. Static and dynamic splinting techniques are also discussed.

Unusual presentation of chondroid syringoma of the hand: a literature review and case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Malignant chondroid syringoma (CS) is a sporadic skin tumor with slow growth and metastatic potential. Its presentation in the hand is uncommon, and limited cases have been reported in the literature. This case highlights an unusual presentation of malignant CS with delayed diagnosis, bone erosion, and distant metastases, adding to the sparse surgical literature on this tumor's aggressive behavior. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old male with a 5-year history of a progressively enlarging ulcerative lesion on his left hand, initially mistaken for an insect bite. The

Management Strategies of Fingertip Injuries: A Case Series.

Fingertip injuries are among the most frequently encountered hand traumas in clinical settings and often result from occupational, recreational, or domestic incidents. These injuries range from simple lacerations and avulsions to more complex presentations involving severe tissue loss, exposed bone, fractures, and nail bed disruptions. Given the intricate anatomy of the fingertip, comprising soft tissue, bone, nerves, and the nail unit, these injuries can significantly compromise hand function, sensation, dexterity, and aesthetic appearance. Prompt and appropriate management is crucial to mini

A new method of measuring the thumb pronation and palmar abduction angles during opposition movement using a three-axis gyroscope.

BACKGROUND: Thumb opposition is vital for hand function and involves pronation and palmar abduction. The improvement of pronation is often used as one of the evaluation items of the opponensplasty method for severe carpal tunnel syndrome. However, most of the studies used substitution evaluation methods for measurement of the pronation angle. Thus, there is still no appropriate method for measuring thumb pronation angle accurately in carpal tunnel syndrome patients. In recent reports, a wearable gyroscope was used to evaluate upper extremity motions and it can be possibly used for accurate mea

Hand-mixed vancomycin versus commercial tobramycin cement revisited: A study on mechanical and antibacterial properties.

PURPOSE: Arthroplasty-related infection has grown worldwide. Revision procedures for infection are associated with longer operating time, superior amounts of blood loss, and substantial economic encumbrance. To overcome cost, many surgeons opt for hand-mixed vancomycin into the bone cement. The objective of this research was to assess the biomechanical strength and antibacterial properties of hand-mixed vancomycin bone cement at different concentrations with commonly used industrial preblended antibiotic bone cement and plain cement. The target was to determine the ideal concentration of antib

Assessment of Biological Age With Conventional Ultrasound Imaging as an Alternative to X-Ray-A Pilot Study in Youth Soccer.

The aim of the study was to evaluate conventional ultrasound (US) as a radiation-free alternative to X-ray for determining biological age (BA; indicated by skeletal age). BA, was determined in 24 healthy, male, elite youth soccer goalkeepers around peak height velocity (11-16 years of age) using both X-ray and conventional US scans of the left hand. X-ray scans were evaluated using the Tanner-Whitehouse 2 method. Conventional US scans served to determine BA via ossification ratios of 13 hand and wrist bones. The new conventional US method showed very strong correlation with X-ray r = 0.90 (p <

Two-stage Reconstruction of Hand Extensor Tendons Using Silicon Rods.

The extensor system of the hand is an intricate complex component that involves a working balance between the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of extension. Injuries to the extensor tendons are typically repaired primarily or by tendon transfers or grafts at a second stage. A 16-year-old boy sustained a right hand crush injury following an all-terrain vehicle accident, resulting in the loss of dorsal skin and extensor tendons of digits 3, 4, and 5 involving extensor zones 4-6, and oblique fractures in the second and third metacarpal bones. Primary surgery involved fixation of aforementioned fra

Exploring the relationship between bone density and severity of distal radius fragility fracture in women.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density (BMD) has been shown to be a consistent and independent risk factor for distal radius fracture. Inconsistent data have been reported on the association between BMD and severity of distal radius fracture. Our primary aim was to explore if there is an association between cortical BMD at the hand and the severity of fragility distal radius fracture. METHODS: Consecutively recruited females aged ≥ 50 years with fragility fracture at the distal radius (n = 110) from a county hospital were included. Cortical hand BMD was assessed by the digital X-ray radiogrammetry

Double localization of giant cell reparative granuloma of the bone in the same finger. Differential diagnosis and treatment.

AIM: This article reports a case of GCRG seen in a young man with a rare double localization in the same finger and illustrates the degree of diagnostic difficulty and treatment. MATERIAL OF STUDY: A 16-year-old man presented with dull pain and swelling of the left middle finger. Plain radiography of the hand showed expansive and lucent lytic lesions with circumferential cortical destruction in the small bones of the proximal and middle phalanges. He underwent en-bloc resection and reconstruction. RESULTS: Histologic findings were consistent with the radiologic diagnosis of GCRG, although se

Orang-like manual adaptations in the fossil hominoid Hispanopithecus laietanus: first steps towards great ape suspensory behaviours.

Morphological and biometrical analyses of the partial hand IPS18800 of the fossil great ape Hispanopithecus laietanus (=Dryopithecus laietanus), from the Late Miocene (about 9.5Ma) of Can Llobateres (Catalonia, Spain), reveal many similarities with extant orang-utans (Pongo). These similarities are interpreted as adaptations to below-branch suspensory behaviours, including arm-swinging and clambering/postural feeding on slender arboreal supports, due to an orang-like double-locking mechanism. This is confirmed by the long and highly curved phalanges of Hispanopithecus. The short and stout meta
