Clinical characteristics and influencing factors of infectious diarrhea in preschool children: An observational study.

Infectious diarrhea is a common disease in preschool children, but the pathogenic species, origins, and influencing factors remain debatable. Therefore, more studies are required to solve these debatable topics. A number of 260 eligible preschool children diagnosed with infectious diarrhea in our hospital were enrolled in the infection group. Meanwhile, a number of 260 matched healthy children from the health center were enrolled in the control group. The pathogenic species and origins, the time of onset of infectious diarrhea in the infection group, demographic data, exposure history, hygiene

Reduction of nosocomial bloodstream infections and nosocomial vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium on an intensive care unit after introduction of antiseptic octenidine-based bathing.

BACKGROUND: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) is emerging in German intensive care units (ICUs). On a 32-bed surgical ICU at a university hospital, increasing numbers of nosocomial cases occurred despite enforcement of hand hygiene and environmental disinfection. AIM: To introduce universal octenidine-based bathing in order to reduce the burden of VRE. METHODS: Between January 2012 and March 2014, patients were screened for VRE on admission and twice weekly. Active surveillance was undertaken for VRE infections and colonizations, and for bloodstream infections (BSI) with any pa

Assessment Of Preanalytical Blood Sampling Errors In Clinical Settings.

BACKGROUND: Blood sampling is one of the common procedures done in every ward for disease diagnosis and prognosis. Daily hundreds of samples are collected from different wards but lack of appropriate knowledge of blood sampling by paramedical staff and accidental errors make the samples inappropriate for testing. Thus the need to avoid these errors for better results still remains. We carried out this research with an aim to determine the common errors during blood sampling; find factors responsible and propose ways to reduce these errors. METHODS: A cross sectional descriptive study was carr

Surveillance and control of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the implementation of a formal set of infection-control policy and procedures (ICPPs) can reduce the number of outbreaks of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) and the number of nosocomially infected patients in a large teaching eye institute. METHODS: A retrospective and prospective study of the incidence of EKC and the number of affected patients was performed for the years 1984 through 1991. Infection-control measures (ICPPs) were formulated in 1992 with regulations implemented for patient control and management, hand washing, instrume

Tolerance of outbreak-associated Candida parapsilosis isolates to antiseptics in a dry surface biofilm model.

This study investigated the susceptibility of Candida parapsilosis clinical isolates, originally recovered from healthcare workers’ hands during a hospital outbreak, to commonly used hospital antiseptics under a dry surface biofilm (DSB) model. Unlike traditional hydrated biofilm systems, DSBs replicate low-moisture, nutrient-limited environments frequently encountered on hospital surfaces and medical devices. Over 12 days, monospecies DSBs were formed on glass coverslips and exposed for 3 min to seven antiseptics preparations, namely ethanol 70% (EtOH 70%), 0.5% alcoholic chlorhexidine (CHG 0

Perioperative parameters to consider for enhanced recovery in surgery (ERS) in gynecology (excluding breast surgery).

The current review explores the Enhanced Rehabilitation in Surgery (ERS) approach in the specific context of gynecological surgery. Implementation of an ERS protocol in gynecological surgery reduces postoperative complications and length of stay without increasing morbidity. An ERS approach is based on maintaining an adequate diet and hydration before the operation, according to the recommended time frame, to reduce the phenomenon of insulin resistance, and to optimize patient comfort. On the other hand, the use of anxiolytic treatment as premedication is not recommended. Systematic preoperati

An outbreak of two strains of OXA-48 producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in a teaching hospital.

OXA-48 producers can be difficult to detect in clinical specimens due to phenotypic low-level resistance to carbapenems. Additionally, low infection rates make clinical specimens poor sentinels for the presence of OXA-48 producers within a healthcare institution. We report an outbreak of OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (OXAKp) that was discovered following culture of OXAKp in a urine specimen from a patient with no known risk factors for acquisition. Widespread screening across medical wards in the trust revealed evidence of transmission across several wards. Samples from 60 patients we

Study of the antibacterial activity in the gas phase of a chemical formulation for household waste management.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to formulate a product (microbicide mixture) that could slow down the bacterial proliferation during the storage of household waste. We used harmless and natural components, known for their antimicrobial properties, in the liquid phase at direct contact with the microbes. The antimicrobial activity of the microbicide mixture formulated was evaluated over a range of concentration in two types of tests, in the liquid and in the gas phase. Once the efficacy of antimicrobial agent in the liquid phase in direct contact with the microbe (Escherichia coli) was co

Nontyphoidal Salmonella among Children under 5 Years Old in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia in the Global Enteric Multicenter Study.

Factors associated with nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection have not been well characterized to date. We aimed to compare the associated factors among children under age 5 years with NTS infection in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Data from children having moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) and asymptomatic children with NTS isolated from fecal specimens were extracted from the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS), conducted from December 2007 to March 2011. Compared with NTS-negative children, NTS-associated MSD cases in South Asia were associated with the presence of goat in the ho

Effects of Individual and Combined Water, Sanitation, Handwashing, and Nutritional Interventions on Child Respiratory Infections in Rural Kenya: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Poor nutrition and hand hygiene are risk factors for acute respiratory infections (ARIs). Safe drinking water and sanitation can reduce exposure to pathogens and encourage healthy immune responses, reducing the risk of ARIs. Within a trial assessing impacts of water, sanitation, and handwashing (WASH), and nutritional interventions, we evaluated effects on ARIs. The WASH Benefits cluster-randomized trial enrolled pregnant women from Kenyan villages and evaluated health outcomes in children born to enrolled mothers 1 and 2 years after intervention delivery. Geographically adjacent clusters were

Clean home-delivery in rural Southern Tanzania: barriers, influencers, and facilitators.

The study explored the childbirth-related hygiene and newborn care practices in home-deliveries in Southern Tanzania and barriers to and facilitators of behaviour change. Eleven home-birth narratives and six focus group discussions were conducted with recently-delivering women; two focus group discussions were conducted with birth attendants. The use of clean cloth for delivery was reported as common in the birth narratives; however, respondents did not link its use to newborn's health. Handwashing and wearing of gloves by birth attendants varied and were not discussed in terms of being import

Predicting psychological responses to influenza A, H1N1 ("swine flu"): the role of illness perceptions.

Previous research on H1N1 ("Swine flu") has demonstrated that although the public reported concern about H1N1, knowledge levels were low, as were reports of behavioural changes aimed at minimising the spread of H1N1. The current study had two main aims; (i) to ascertain levels of state anxiety and knowledge about H1N1, and (ii) to examine if illness perceptions predict anxiety about H1N1, perceived risk of contracting H1N1, and knowledge about H1N1. The study was cross-sectional in design, and involved 235 participants (100 males, 135 females, mean age 22.48 years) completing self-report measu

Recurring norovirus outbreaks in a long-term residential treatment facility - Oregon, 2007.

On November 9, 2007, the Oregon Public Health Division (OPHD) was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in a long-term residential treatment facility. Two previous outbreaks caused by norovirus had occurred at the facility in March and July 2007. OPHD initiated an in-depth epidemiologic investigation, which included submitting archived and recent specimens from the three outbreaks to CDC for genotyping. This report summarizes findings of the outbreak investigation and laboratory testing. The overall attack rate for the most recent outbreak was approximately 14% among patients and 7%

The epic project: developing national evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare associated infections. Phase I: Guidelines for preventing hospital-acquired infections. Department of Health (England).

In 1998, the Department of Health (England) commissioned the first phase of national evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare associated infections. These focused on developing a set of standard principles for preventing infections in hospitals together with guidelines for preventing hospital-acquired infections (HAI) associated with the use of short-term indwelling ureteral catheters in acute care and with central venous catheters in acute care. These guidelines are systematically developed broad statements (principles) of good practice that all practitioners can use and which can
