Understanding and supporting the mental health and professional quality of life of academic mental health researchers: results from a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Academic mental health research is critical to understanding, treating and preventing poor mental health. Researchers often have their own lived experience of a mental health condition, but despite potential exposure to distressing research material, the mental health and work-related quality of life of mental health researchers is not systematically supported in UK universities. This study aimed to quantitatively characterise the mental health experiences, professional quality of life and workplace support needs of this group. METHODS: UK academic mental health researchers (n = 2

A Pilot Study of a Body Neutrality Workbook Intervention to Improve Physical Activity and Motivation in Insufficiently Active Women.

Nearly half of adult women in the United States do not meet recommended levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), despite well-established health benefits. Sociocultural pressures emphasizing thinness and appearance may promote controlled, appearance-based motivation for physical activity (PA), a motivational orientation that has been associated with less sustained engagement. This pilot study examined whether a 6-week, self-guided body neutrality workbook intervention was associated with changes in MVPA and psychological mediators of PA among insufficiently active adult women.

Considerations and discussions about later life among people living with HIV: insights from a nationwide cross-sectional study in Japan.

The increasing population of older people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) highlights the importance of advance care planning (ACP) and tailored approaches to later life and end-of-life care. This study examined the extent to which PLWH consider their own aging and end-of-life stage, their discussion of these topics with healthcare providers, and factors associated with such discussions. PLWH aged ≥50 years were recruited from nine hospitals and one clinic in Japan. Among 715 eligible participants, 48.9% had considered the person they would like to entrust with important decisio

Vagueness and Ambiguity in Communication of Case Management: A Content Analysis in the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Case management (CM) is an integrated care strategy, characterised by a set of actions to support person-centred planning, coordination of health and social services. Decades of CM, organisational psychology and occupational research highlight how vagueness and ambiguity in role communication can create role conflict and job stress, negatively impacts staff turnover, intra-organisational collaboration, job performance, and that poor communication of CM impedes policy, quality analysis service development and practice. We conducted a detailed top-down hierarchical, quality analysis of communica

Experiences of Informal Caregivers Facing Cancer While Caring for Someone With Dementia: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers play a fundamental role in the diagnosis, treatment, and care received by their family members. Caring for someone with dementia is particularly burdensome and can have negative effects on caregivers' health. Despite caregivers being widely recognized as vulnerable, the psychosocial needs of caregivers who are managing cancer themselves remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the experiences of UK family caregivers who have received a cancer diagnosis while caring for someone with dementia or memory problems. METHODS: Twenty-five UK informal

Assessing the sustainability of the Systems Analysis and Improvement Approach to increase HIV testing in family planning clinics in Mombasa, Kenya: results of a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: In Kenya, HIV incidence is highest among reproductive-age women. A key HIV mitigation strategy is the integration of HIV testing and counseling (HTC) into family planning services, but successful integration remains problematic. We conducted a cluster-randomized trial using the Systems Analysis and Improvement Approach (SAIA) to identify and address bottlenecks in HTC integration in family planning clinics in Mombasa County, Kenya. This trial (1) assessed the efficacy of this approach and (2) examined if SAIA could be sustainably incorporated into the Department of Health Services

Risk and protective factors for suicidal thoughts and behaviors among Black female and male youth with depression symptoms - United States, 2004-2019.

BACKGROUND: From 2004 to 2019, suicide rates among Black youth increased by 122 % for females and 65 % for males. Guided by the interpersonal theory of suicide, this study explored how perceptions of social support and parental involvement may contribute to suicidal behavior among Black youth aged 12-17 years. METHODS: Data are from the 2004-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Multivariable logistic regression with backwards elimination was conducted to determine if characteristics associated with outcomes of interest (i.e., suicidal ideation, made a suicide plan, and made a

Telephone counseling as adjuvant treatment for nicotine replacement therapy in a "real-world" setting.

BACKGROUND: Physicians prescribing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), or health plans covering NRT, often want their patients to receive adjuvant behavioral treatment. However, how to do that in a "real world" is unclear. This paper reports results from a public health program that uses proactive telephone counseling as support for physician advice and provides adjuvant treatment for NRT users. METHODS: Participants were NRT users (N = 8,832) who called the California Smokers' Helpline, a statewide cessation service that provides proactive counseling, one session before NRT use and multisess

Getting closer to people: family planning provision by drug shops in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Private-sector drug shops are often the first point of health care in sub-Saharan Africa. Training and supporting drug shop and pharmacy staff to provide a wide range of contraceptive methods and information is a promising high-impact practice for which more information is needed to fully document implementation experience and impact. METHODS: Between September 2010 and March 2011, we trained 139 drug shop operators (DSOs) in 4 districts of Uganda to safely administer intramuscular DMPA (depot medroxyprogesterone acetate) contraceptive injections. In 2012, we approached 54 of thes

Revitalization of integrated disease surveillance and response in Sierra Leone post Ebola virus disease outbreak.

BACKGROUND: The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) in Sierra Leone partially rolled out the implementation of Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) in 2003. After the Ebola virus disease outbreak in 2014-2015, there was need to strengthen IDSR to ensure prompt detection and response to epidemic-prone diseases. We describe the processes, successes and challenges of revitalizing public health surveillance in a country recovering from a protracted Ebola virus disease outbreak. METHODS: The revitalization process began with adaptation of the revised IDSR guidelines and develop

The Health Literacy of Hong Kong Chinese Parents with Preschool Children in Seasonal Influenza Prevention: A Multiple Case Study at Household Level.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy influences individual and family health behaviour, health services use, and ultimately health outcomes and health care costs. In Hong Kong, people are at risk of seasonal influenza infection twice a year for three-month periods. Seasonal influenza is significantly associated with an increased number of hospitalized children. There is no research that provides an understanding of parents' health knowledge and their access to health information concerning seasonal influenza, nor their capacity to effectively manage influenza episodes in household. Such knowledge provi

Ebola in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo: One Health approach to infectious disease control.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing its tenth outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD), in North-Kivu and Ituri provinces. This is the second most deadly EVD outbreak in history, after the one that occurred in West Africa in 2014. The DRC Ministry of Health (MoH), supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and a range of regional and international partners, are implementing EVD response plans in these affected areas such as screening of suspect cases at points of entry, case detection, contact tracing, laboratory testing, case management and infection prevention and control, sa

Care of Adults With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that primarily affect motor function. This developmental disability is becoming more common in adults as life expectancy increases for individuals with CP. Many physical, medical, mental, and behavioral health conditions are associated with CP, and assistance should be provided to patients with CP to optimize function, when available. These comorbidities include intellectual disabilities, seizures, muscle contractures, abnormal gait, osteoporosis, communication disorders, malnutrition, sleep disorders, and mental health disorders, such as depression

Can Motivational Interviewing Make a Difference in Supporting Employees to Deal with Elevated Blood Pressure? A Feasibility Study at the Workplace.

Background: To overcome the problem of a high prevalence of undiscovered or untreated arterial hypertension in people of working age, the effects of behavioral change counseling in occupational health (OH) services should be investigated. The technique of motivational interviewing (MI) to support health-related lifestyle changes by physicians and/or occupational nurses ('health coach') has been shown to be successful in patients with chronic diseases. In 2010, we planned a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with employees who suffer from mild arterial hypertension. A preliminary feasibility stu

International Sexual Health And REproductive health (I-SHARE) survey during COVID-19: study protocol for online national surveys and global comparative analyses.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 may have a profound impact on sexual health, reproductive health and social life across the world. Shelter in place regulations that have extended across the globe may influence condomless sex, exacerbate intimate partner violence and reduce access to essential reproductive health services. Population representative research is challenging during shelter in place, leaving major gaps in our understanding of sexual and reproductive health during COVID-19. This International Sexual Health And ReproductivE health (I-SHARE) study protocol manuscript describes a common plan for

Mental health in children with and without disabilities in a register-based Swedish sample supports the two-continua model: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is a term frequently used to describe mental health problems. However, mental health includes both mental health problems and well-being. Therefore, mental health can be seen as having two distinct yet related dimensions, as described in the two-continua model of mental health (Westerhof & Keyes, 2010) where an individual can simultaneously experience any combination of well-being and problems, suggesting four classes: (i) high well-being, low problems; (ii) high well-being, high problems; (iii) low well-being, low problems; and (iv) low well-being, high problems.
