Incidence and risk factors of hearing loss in patients with Turner Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss (HL) is one of the main medical complications for Turner Syndrome (TS) patients, with an earlier presentation and higher incidence than normal women. However, the etiology of HL in TS is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the hearing status of TS patients in China and the influencing factors, so as to provide a theoretical basis for early intervention treatment for TS patients with HL. METHODS: In total 46 female patients aged 14-32 diagnosed with TS received tympanic membrane and audiological examinations, including pure tone audiometry and tympanometr

Outer Hair Cell Molecular Protein, Prestin, as a Serum Biomarker for Hearing Loss: Proof of Concept.

HYPOTHESIS: At present there are no serum biomarkers available to monitor cochlear health in those at risk of hearing loss. Outer hair cells (OHCs) play an important role in cochlear function and are one of the cellular elements most vulnerable to damage, such as acoustic trauma. We hypothesized that an OHC-specific protein can serve as a biomarker for OHC damage in circulation. METHODS: After assessing auditory function, rats were exposed to intense octave band noise for 2 to 3 hours. Auditory function was assessed 14 days after trauma. Blood samples were collected and prestin concentration

Decision-Making in Adolescents with Profound Hearing Loss.

People with profound hearing loss show differences in language-related cognitive functions that may affect decision-making processes, but few studies have examined their decision-making behavior. The current study used the Iowa Gambling Task and the Game of Dice Task to explore the decision-making characteristics of adolescents with profound hearing loss. In the Iowa Gambling Task, deaf adolescents were more inclined to choose from the deck of infrequent losses with large immediate gains and larger future losses. In the Game of Dice Task, the deaf adolescents showed a preference for high-risk

Genetics of peripheral vestibular dysfunction: lessons from mutant mouse strains.

BACKGROUND: A considerable amount of research has been published about genetic hearing impairment. Fifty to sixty percent of hearing loss is thought to have a genetic cause. Genes may also play a significant role in acquired hearing loss due to aging, noise exposure, or ototoxic medications. Between 1995 and 2012, over 100 causative genes have been identified for syndromic and nonsyndromic forms of hereditary hearing loss. Mouse models have been extremely valuable in facilitating the discovery of hearing loss genes and in understanding inner ear pathology due to genetic mutations or elucidatin

The influence of karyotype on the auricle, otitis media and hearing in Turner syndrome.

The study has investigated the relationship between the chromosomal aberration and ear and/or hearing disorders in 115 girls/women with Turner syndrome (TS). A dose-response relationship was found between the karyotype and hearing function. Hearing deteriorated more rapidly with increasing age in TS women lacking the whole p-arm of chromosome X (i.e. monosomy 45,X, or isochromosome cases 46,X,i(Xq)) as compared to women having a partial deletion of the p-arm (structural deletions or mosaicism cases), who, in turn, had poorer hearing than a female random population sample (46,XX) (P<0.001). Post traumatic deafness: a pictorial review of CT and MRI findings.

UNLABELLED: Hearing loss is a common functional disorder after trauma, and radiologists should be aware of the ossicular, labyrinthine or brain lesions that may be responsible. After a trauma, use of a systematic approach to explore the main functional components of auditory pathways is essential. Conductive hearing loss is caused by the disruption of the conductive chain, which may be due to ossicular luxation or fracture. This pictorial review firstly describes the normal 2-D and 3-D anatomy of the ossicular chain, including the incudo-malleolar and incudo-stapedial joints. The role of 3-D C

Abnormal Subjective and Audiometric Auditory Function in Migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To identify if migraine is associated with auditory deficits and if the auditory profile of migraine is distinct from other pain syndromes, such as chronic pain. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional, retrospective. SETTING: A total of 5273 respondents of the 1999 to 2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. METHODS: Regression analyses assessed the association between migraine (n = 1245) and chronic pain (n = 430) status with subjectively endorsed hearing loss, tinnitus, pure-tone average (PTA) at 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz, and subjective-audiometric hearing mismatch (en

Neural Hearing Loss: Mechanisms, Diagnosis and Treatment Horizons.

Neural hearing loss, characterized by dysfunction of the auditory nerve, including the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and/or their synaptic connections, is increasingly recognized as a critical contributor to auditory deficits across diverse conditions, including Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD), presbycusis, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is possible that neural hearing loss is underdiagnosed, due to the lack of clinical tools with sufficient sensitivity and specificity to detect poor neural health. Current interventions, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants (CIs)

Reduction of permanent hearing loss by local glucocorticoid application : Guinea pigs with acute acoustic trauma.

BACKGROUND: High-intensity noise exposure from impulse and blast noise events often leads to acute hearing loss and may cause irreversible permanent hearing loss as a long-term consequence. Here, a treatment regime was developed to limit permanent damage based on a preclinical animal model of acute noise trauma. AIM: To develop clinical trials for the treatment of acute noise traumas using approved drugs. The otoprotective potential of glucocorticoids applied locally to the inner ear was examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A series of experiments with different impulse noise exposures were perf

Auckland hearing science discovery and translation in purinergic signaling and inner ear therapeutics.

The inner ear is a complex sensory organ responsible for hearing and balance. It is deeply embedded in the temporal bone with challenging access for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Stress and injury to the peripheral hearing organ (cochlea) lead to temporary or permanent sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which is the most common form of hearing loss resulting from cellular and molecular damage to the sensory hair cells and primary auditory neurons in the spiral ganglion. These cells cannot regenerate, and their loss leads to hearing disability. Hearing aids can amplify sound and improve

Olfactory dysfunction is common in classical infratentorial superficial siderosis of the central nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Established features of classical infratentorial superficial siderosis (iSS) include hearing loss, impaired balance, myelopathy and, less commonly, cognitive compromise. Olfactory function may be affected but dedicated studies are lacking. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in iSS and correlate it with auditory and cognitive functions. METHODS: Ten participants with iSS completed the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT). The scores were compared with population norms; regression analysis was performed to evaluate associations

Sudden deafness due to infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

A case is described of sudden unilateral deafness associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The hearing function of the patient returned to normal on the third day of treatment with tetracycline. M pneumoniae is a common causative agent of protean respiratory disease and the true incidence of hearing loss in these cases may be higher than reflected by the occasional reports. Therefore, appropriate laboratory studies should be included in the evaluation of sensorineural loss associated with diverse infections of the respiratory tract. Prompt diagnosis facilitates the administration of specific tre

Auditory brain stem evoked responses to bone-conducted signals.

Auditory brain stem evoked responses to air-conducted and bone-conducted signals were recorded in subjects with normal hearing and in subjects with conductive hearing loss. In normal subjects, the latency to wave V for bone-conducted signals was approximately 0.5 ms longer than the latency for air-conducted signals delivered at the same sensation level. In conductive hearing loss, the separation of the latency-intensity functions for air conduction and bone conduction (corrected for the 0.5-ms delay) provided a valid estimate of the behavioral air-bone gap in the 1,000- to 4,000-Hz region.

Growth Hormone and the Auditory Pathway: Neuromodulation and Neuroregeneration.

Growth hormone (GH) plays an important role in auditory development during the embryonic stage. Exogenous agents such as sound, noise, drugs or trauma, can induce the release of this hormone to perform a protective function and stimulate other mediators that protect the auditory pathway. In addition, GH deficiency conditions hearing loss or central auditory processing disorders. There are promising animal studies that reflect a possible regenerative role when exogenous GH is used in hearing impairments, demonstrated in in vivo and in vitro studies, and also, even a few studies show beneficial

Tinnitus: diagnostic approach leading to treatment.

Optimal care for a patient with tinnitus begins with identifying the cause of the tinnitus. Once the cause has been identified then an appropriate treatment plan can be initiated. In this article, the author reviews how to identify the tinnitus etiology and its treatment. The workup begins with the patient's description of the percept because in some cases, the quality of the tinnitus will make the diagnosis (e.g., clicking, which is readily suppressed pharmacologically); in other cases, it will give direction in the diagnostic evaluation (e.g., pulsatile). With the exception of a small dural a

Diagnostic testing for endolymphatic hydrops.

The development of a sensitive and specific diagnostic test for endolymphatic hydrops has eluded investigators for over 30 years. The absence of such a test has hampered basic and clinical research into Meniere's disease and related entities. Presently used tests are limited in their applicability because of their low sensitivity and specificity and a poor understanding of the underlying physiologic principles. Despite this, it is generally agreed that some of these studies have merit in selected situations. This article reviews the present state of diagnostic testing for endolymphatic hydrops
