Sesamin attenuates PM2.5-induced cardiovascular injury by inhibiting ferroptosis in rats.

Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the pharmacological effects of sesamin (Ses) and its mechanism of action towards PM2.5-induced cardiovascular injuries. Method: Forty Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into five groups: a saline control group; a PM2.5 exposure group; and low-, middle-, and high-dose Ses pretreatment groups. The SD rats were pretreated with different concentrations of Ses for 21 days. Afterward, the rats were exposed to ambient PM2.5 by intratracheal instillation every other day for a total of three times. The levels of inflammatory markers, including tumor

Blunt Trauma to the Heart: A Review of Pathophysiology and Current Management.

Blunt cardiac injury (BCI), defined as an injury to the heart from blunt force trauma, ranges from minor to life-threatening. The majority of BCIs are due to motor vehicle accidents; however, injuries caused by falls, blasts, and sports-related injuries also can be sources of BCI. A significant proportion of patients with BCI do not survive long enough to receive medical care, succumbing to their injuries at the scene of the accident. Additionally, patients with blunt trauma often have coexisting injuries (brain, spine, orthopedic) that can obscure the clinical picture; therefore, a high degre

Thoracic injuries in professional rugby players: mechanisms of injury and imaging characteristics.

Professional rugby players are prone to traumatic thoracic injuries due to the use of minimal protective gear to cover the torso. In the 2007 Rugby World Cup, thoracic injuries occurred at a rate of 8.3 cases/1000 player-hours. CT and MRI play an important role in the diagnosis of these injuries. Vital internal organs, such as the heart, lungs, trachea, liver and large blood vessels lie within close proximity to the bony structures and what seems to be a simple rib fracture or clavicular dislocation can have potentially life-threatening complications that are not detected by conventional radio

Gunshot wounds: causing myocardial infarction, delayed ventricular septal defect, and congestive heart failure.

Penetrating chest trauma can cause a wide variety of cardiac injuries, including myocardial contusion, damage to the interventricular septum, laceration of the coronary arteries, and free-wall rupture. Herein, we describe the case of a 21-year-old man who presented with congestive heart failure, which was secondary to an old myocardial infarction and complicated by the delayed formation of a ventricular septal defect. All of these conditions were attributable to multiple gunshot wounds that the patient had sustained 6 months earlier. Left ventricular angiography showed an apical aneurysm; a la

Safety of mechanical and manual chest compressions in cardiac arrest patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: Summarise the evidence regarding the safety of mechanical and manual chest compressions for cardiac arrest patients. METHODS: Two investigators separately screened the articles of EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane Central databases. Cohort studies and randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated the safety of mechanical (LUCAS or AutoPulse) and manual chest compressions in cardiac arrest patients were included. A meta-analysis was performed using a random effects model to calculate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The primary outcome was the rate of o

Neonatal injury models: integral tools to decipher the molecular basis of cardiac regeneration.

Myocardial injury often leads to heart failure due to the loss and insufficient regeneration of resident cardiomyocytes. The low regenerative potential of the mammalian heart is one of the main drivers of heart failure progression, especially after myocardial infarction accompanied by large contractile muscle loss. Preclinical therapies for cardiac regeneration are promising, but clinically still missing. Mammalian models represent an excellent translational in vivo platform to test drugs and treatments for the promotion of cardiac regeneration. Particularly, short-lived mice offer the possibi

Penetrating injury to the left ventricle caused by attempted suicide-a case report.

Penetrating cardiac injuries are rare but are one of the most urgent emergencies because they require early intervention in order to prevent death. The mortality rate of such injuries, including pre-hospitalization deaths, goes up to 90%. The most commonly injured heart chamber is the right ventricle since it takes over half of the anterior thoracic wall. The left ventricle is injured less often, but these patients usually have worse prognoses and higher mortality rates because such injuries lead to hemodynamic instability faster. We present a unique case of a suicide attempt in which the pati

Dynamic Transcriptional Responses to Injury of Regenerative and Non-regenerative Cardiomyocytes Revealed by Single-Nucleus RNA Sequencing.

The adult mammalian heart is incapable of regeneration following injury. In contrast, the neonatal mouse heart can efficiently regenerate during the first week of life. The molecular mechanisms that mediate the regenerative response and its blockade in later life are not understood. Here, by single-nucleus RNA sequencing, we map the dynamic transcriptional landscape of five distinct cardiomyocyte populations in healthy, injured, and regenerating mouse hearts. We identify immature cardiomyocytes that enter the cell cycle following injury and disappear as the heart loses the ability to regenerat

Pneumorachis associated with persistent tachycardia after blunt thoracic trauma.

Pneumorachis, or intraspinal air, can be a rare result of blunt thoracic trauma. We report the case of a 40-year-old man with multiple injuries and pneumorachis associated with persistent tachycardia. As factors that increase heart rate were gradually ruled out, intraspinal air was considered the potential culprit. Computed tomography revealed intraspinal air at the thoracic level, which possibly promoted cardiac arrhythmogenesis. Air may transiently compress the preganglionic cardiac sympathetic nerves and increase sympathetic output to the heart.

Cardiac tamponade caused by a migrating sewing needle.

: Penetrating injuries of the heart caused by migrating needles have been rarely described. They usually occur accidentally or are self-inflicted in the setting of an underlying psychiatric disorder. We present an unusual case of cardiac tamponade caused by a sewing needle that migrated to the heart from the chest wall through the lung. The lesions were successfully repaired through a median sternotomy without cardiopulmonary bypass. The pathophysiological mechanism and the pertinent literature are briefly analysed.

Formate reduces cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury in murine ex vivo and in vitro models.

Ischemic heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States. We and others have demonstrated that nitric oxide (NO) signaling and associated protein S-nitrosation (SNO) play a key role in reducing ischemic injury in the heart. We also find that although females typically exhibit endogenous protection from ischemic injury, this protection is abrogated with the loss of the formate-generating enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase 5 (ADH5), but formate supplementation provided a rescue. Here, we investigate the cardioprotective efficacy of formate in male hearts. Hearts were Langendorff-perfuse

Effect of high elevation on deep vein thrombosis: a multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prior research explored the effect of elevation on deep vein thrombosis (DVT) but primarily examined injuries at elevations <1000 or >4000 feet, excluding elevations in between, and focused on specific subsets of trauma patients. This study aimed to conduct a more detailed analysis of the relationship between elevation and DVT in all trauma admissions. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study at four level I trauma centers included adult trauma patients (October 1, 2022 to October 1, 2023). Injury zip codes were used to define elevation. High-elevation (H-ELV) injuries (≥5000 feet

Hydrogen sulphide attenuates renal and cardiac injury after total hepatic ischemia and reperfusion.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies that focus on the important organs injuries induced by total hepatic ischemia and reperfusion (THIR), which is a key to save the lives of hepatic surgery patients. We evaluated changes in the hydrogen sulphide production system and injuries to the heart and kidney. The aim of this study was to assess whether sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS) has protective effects against THIR injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under anaesthesia of the Wistar rats, the hepatic artery, the portal vein, and the inferior vena cava above and below the liver were clamped with nontraumatic a

Pain, pain catastrophizing, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction after traumatic injury: A prospective cohort study.

Traumatic injuries from road traffic crashes are a major global health concern, resulting in significant physical, emotional, and social consequences, with pain being a frequent outcome. Chronic pain is often accompanied by maladaptive cognitive-emotional patterns, such as pain catastrophizing (PC) and autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, but their association with injuries remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to examine the impact of traffic-related injuries on pain, PC, ANS function, and their interrelationships. A prospective cohort of 120 adults with mild-to-moderate injur

Propofol-mediated cardioprotection dependent of microRNA-451/HMGB1 against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Administration of propofol at the time of reperfusion has shown to protect the heart from ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury. The aim of the present study was to investigate the molecular mechanism underling the cardioprotective effect of propofol against myocardial I/R injury (MIRI) in vivo and in vitro. Rat heart I/R injury was induced by ligation of the left anterior descending (LAD) artery for 30 min followed by 2-hr reperfusion. Propofol pretreatment (0.01 mg/g) was performed 10 min before reperfusion. In vitro MIRI was investigated in cultured cardiomyocytes H9C2 following hypoxia/reo
