CASE: We present a case of traumatic anterior obturator hip dislocation in a pediatric patient with a focus on acute management of this injury. The orthopaedic team successfully performed closed reduction of this injury on an emergent basis, and the patient had minimal issues with ambulation and pain at subsequent follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Pediatric traumatic hip dislocations are rare injuries with potentially devastating sequelae, particularly if diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Proper technique during closed reduction is essential. Be prepared for potential emergent open reduction. Two yea

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the risk of lateral circumflex femoral artery (LCFA) injury during ultrasound-guided intra-articular hip injections.
METHODS: This study was divided into three parts. (1) Four ultrasound-guided hip injections were performed on human cadavers. With needles in place, tissues were dissected to expose the LCFA. (2) Ultrasound-trained rheumatologists marked a planned needle trajectory from skin to hip joint on live human ultrasound images during an Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Doppler was subsequently activated to locate the LCFA, and the distance betwe

The incidence of iatrogenic peripheral nerve injury during hip arthroplasty procedures has been reported to be between 0.6 and 1.3 percent. The relative risk of nerve palsy is higher in certain groups of patients such as women, patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip, and those who have undergone revision arthroplasty. In this study, the dynamic relationship between the acetabulum and the sciatic nerve, which is important for preventing sciatic nerve palsy during the hip surgery, was investigated. The sciatic nerve was exposed in 69 cadaveric hips. The relationship between the bony ac

BACKGROUND: Accurate knowledge about biomechanical alterations in chronic ankle instability (CAI) during dynamic movements may inform rehabilitation strategies.
OBJECTIVE: To identify movement patterns associated with CAI injury during a step-down task.
METHOD: Seventeen participants with CAI and 17 healthy controls performed a step-down task from heights of 20 and 40 cm. Lower limb joint angles, range of motion (ROM), moments, and power were measured. The one-dimensional statistical parametric mapping (SPM) test compared groups across the entire task (0%-100%).
RESULTS: At 20 cm height, th

This study intended to identify the risk factors for injurious falls that led to hospitalization of older persons living in the community. A hospital-based unmatched incident case-control study was done among 251 cases and 250 controls admitted at a tertiary care centre in Kerala. Mean age of cases was 71.6 ± 9.13 years and that of controls was 67.02 ± 6.17 years. Hip fractures were the predominant injury following falls. Falls were mostly a result of intrinsic causes. After adjusting for other variabes, the risk factors for all injuries were age above 70 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.25; 95% con

Ligamentum teres (LT) Injuries or tears have been said to be a common cause of groin discomfort and pain, and they have been identified in 8-51% of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy. Currently, in the literature there exist three arthroscopic classifications for LT injuries and tears: the first classification was established by Gray and Villar, Botser and Domb proposed the second one which they called a descriptive classification according to the degree of partial thickness LT tears and more recently the last classification by Cerezal et al. (RadioGraphics 2010; 30:1637-51), where they take

CASE: A 23-year-old woman with injury-induced acetabular dysplasia developed subacute recurrent dislocation of the right hip following closed reduction of a traumatic dislocation. The initial dislocation had been associated with small posterior wall and femoral head fractures. The recurrent dislocation was addressed with an acute periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) for hip stabilization and femoral head fragment excision.
CONCLUSION: An acute PAO is an unusual yet viable treatment strategy for addressing recurrent dislocation following traumatic fracture-dislocation in patients with posterior wall

Hamstring strain injury is a multifactorial and complex problem involving interactions among various factors. Information about risk factors for this injury is inconsistent among studies because the strong effects of confounding factors and injury situations are often ignored. We investigated the relationship between hamstring strain induced by high-speed running and intrinsic risk factors, including hip muscle morphology and function, by excluding the influences of confounding factors. Sixty-one male track and field athletes (age, 19.6 ± 1.1 years; 95% confidence interval, 19.3-19.9) who ofte

Traumatic dislocation of the hip results in osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) or avascular necrosis (AVN) in approximately 40% of patients. This high-energy event causes an ischemic insult to the femoral head that may lead to ONFH. Here, we investigate use of Free-Vascularized Fibular Grafting (FVFG) in patients with ONFH after traumatic hip dislocation. Thirty-five patients with FVFG for this indication were reviewed (average follow-up 3.3 years, range 1-21). We reviewed patient injury statistics, demographics, preoperative radiographs, pre- and postoperative Harris Hip scores, complic

The aim of this review was to identify all types of injuries connected to the gestures of dancers and understand the associated biomechanical patterns. This is the first step in the definition of a prevention program that lacks in this kind of athletic activity. A search of Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane database from 1990 to 2019 using the search terms ''dance and injuries'' and ''dance and injuries and epidemiology'' initially resulted in 601 citations. A total of 16 articles were eligible for a review. All health problems that lead to stop the activity of a dancer are classified a

STUDY DESIGN: Literature review.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to describe the injuries associated with sacral fractures and to analyze their impact on patient outcome.
METHODS: A comprehensive narrative review of the literature was performed to identify the injuries associated with sacral fractures.
RESULTS: Sacral fractures are uncommon injuries that result from high-energy trauma, and that, due to their rarity, are frequently underdiagnosed and mistreated. Only 5% of sacral fractures occur in isolation. Injuries most often associated with sacral fractures include neurologic injuri

Summer dance intensive programs are an integral part of many serious dancers' training. The risk and rate of injury in this setting have not been well studied. The goal of this data analysis is to detail the epidemiology of dance injuries reported during a summer dance intensive over a consecutive 3 year period. Data collection included information regarding the number of evaluation and treatment sessions conducted at the program's walk-in clinic, body regions injured, whether the injuries were recurrences of pre-existing conditions or newly sustained during the intensive, and at what point in

BACKGROUND: Less optimal sagittal plane movement patterns are believed to increase knee injury risk in female athletes. To facilitate clinical screening with a user-friendly method, the purpose of the present study was to examine the temporal relationships between two-dimensional measured sagittal plane kinematics and three-dimensional joint moments during the double-leg drop vertical jump (DVJ) and single-leg DVJ (SLDVJ).
METHODS: Fifty injury-free female athletes were tested. Maximal excursions of hip flexion, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion were measured through two-dimensional video a

As one of the many causes of groin pain, iliopsoas tendinitis can be hard to identify and even harder to treat. It occurs in the setting of both the native hip joint and following total hip arthroplasty. Internal snapping, or coxa saltans, can result from the iliopsoas snapping over the anterior hip capsule or iliopectineal eminence and can be a source of labral pathology. The snapping can be painful or painless. Iliopsoas impingement over total hip components either from the cup or collar of a femoral stem are causes of anterior groin pain. However, there are multiple other causes of groin pa

PURPOSE: The rapidly growing and emerging nature of biologics have made indications for regenerative and reparative hip therapies ever changing, with at times only early-stage evidence for their use. The purpose of this study was to review and summarize the currently available data on the management of hip cartilage injuries and osteoarthritis.
METHODS: A scoping review of the available scientific literature for hip biologics was performed, with available evidence for hyaluronic acid (HA), platelet rich plasma (PRP), stem/stromal cells, microfracture, mosaicplasty, osteochondral allograft, an

This paper discussed the injury mechanism and management of a patient who had concomitant ipsilateral hip and knee dislocations and contralateral open leg fracture. A 32-year-old man presented with ipsilateral fracture-dislocations of the left hip (Pipkin's type IV) and knee (Moore II) joints and contralateral open fracture of the leg bones after a car accident. After emergency resuscitative measures, the hip joint was reduced and Pipkin's fracture was fixed using Ganz approach with lag screws; knee joint was reduced closely and tibial plateau fracture was stabilized with lateral buttress plat

BACKGROUND: Reduced hip adduction strength has been identified as a key predisposing factor in developing hip and groin injuries. The Copenhagen adduction programme has been shown to increase hip adduction strength in semiprofessional footballers but can cause muscle soreness. Therefore, a modified progressive Copenhagen adduction (MPCA) programme has been designed to increase hip adduction strength while limiting muscle soreness.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of an 8-week MPCA exercise on eccentric hip adduction and abduction strength in senior professional footballers.
METHODS: 25 s

There is a continuum of hamstring injuries that can range from musculotendinous strains to avulsion injuries. Although the proximal hamstring complex has a strong bony attachment on the ischial tuberosity, hamstring injuries are common in athletic population and can affect all levels of athletes. Nonoperative treatment is mostly recommended in the setting of low-grade partial tears and insertional tendinosis. However, failure of nonoperative treatment of partial tears may benefit from surgical debridement and repair. The technique presented on this article allows for the endoscopic management

BACKGROUND: Safe surgical dislocation has revolutionised hip preservation surgery by allowing complete access to the proximal femur while minimising the risk of avascular necrosis. However, despite meticulous technique, intraoperative injury to the superior retinacular vessels (SRV), the primary blood supply to the femoral head, can still occur, potentially compromising outcomes.
PURPOSE: To identify, classify, and analyse intraoperative patterns and mechanisms of SRV injury during surgical hip dislocation procedures performed for complex hip deformities.
METHODS: A prospective analysis of a
