Nevus depigmentosus: the analysis of 37 cases.

BACKGROUND: Nevus depigmentosus (ND) is an uncommon congenital nonprogressive hypopigmented skin disorder that can be seen anywhere on the body. We considered other depigmenting disorders and focused on distinguishing ND from vitiligo and tuberous sclerosis complex in infancy. METHODS: The diagnosis of patients with nevus depigmentosus was made differentiating it from nevus anemicus, pityriasis alba, tuberous sclerosis complex, vitiligo and other depigmenting disorders. RESULTS: Of the 37 individuals with nevus depigmentosus evaluated, 36 were children, twenty-two (59.4%) were males and 15 (

Rare Variant of Agminated Spitz Nevi on a Hypopigmented Background and Segmental Distribution: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Spitz nevus is a type of melanocytic nevus that can arise as a solitary lesion or as multiple lesions either disseminated or agminated (grouped) in different skin backgrounds (eg, grossly normal, hyperpigmented, or hypopigmented). Agminated Spitz nevi have been rarely reported and are even rarer in a background of hypopigmented skin. We present the case of a 2-month-old girl with multiple, grouped, dome-shaped, red papules arising on a hypopigmented patch with a segmental distribution. Biopsy of 2 lesions showed findings characteristic of Spitz nevus, confirming the diagnosis. We also review 4

Treatment with Modified Heat Shock Protein Repigments Vitiligo Lesions in Sinclair Swine.

HSP70i is secreted by stressed melanocytes, is associated with human vitiligo lesions, and functionally contributes to a mouse model of vitiligo. Henning et al. report that treatment with a modified version of the protein reversed depigmentation in Sinclair swine, a useful animal model of vitiligo. These studies provide the rationale for testing in human studies.

[A second case of white lentiginosis].

INTRODUCTION: White lentiginosis is characterized by white guttate macules with a typical histological structure: lentiginosis hyperplasia with hypopigmentation. OBSERVATION: A 23-year-old woman, from Algeria, presented with white macules from 5 years ago. Few women in her family had the same trouble. Cutaneous examination revealed diffused white little macules. Histological examination showed a lentiginous hyperplasia of the epidermis, with elongated club-shaped rete ridges and an unusual loss of pigmentation. DISCUSSION: Different diagnosis should be discussed with disseminated leucoderma …

Diagnosis using nail matrix.

Diagnosing nail matrix diseases requires knowledge of the nail matrix function and anatomy. This allows recognition of the clinical manifestations and assessment of potential surgical risk. Nail signs depend on the location within the matrix (proximal or distal) and the intensity, duration, and extent of the insult. Proximal matrix involvement includes nail surface irregularities (longitudinal lines, transverse lines, roughness of the nail surface, pitting, and superficial brittleness), whereas distal matrix insult induces longitudinal or transverse chromonychia. Clinical signs are described a

Hypomelanosis of Ito: a round on the frequency and type of epileptic complications.

There is an ample evidence that hypopigmentation of the skin along the Blaschko's lines is frequently associated with neurological disorders. Nowadays, the term "Hypomelanosis of Ito" (HI) is applied when, together with the cutaneous lesions, various and multisystem organs are involved. Among these, the most frequent are cerebral manifestations, such as cognitive delay and epileptic seizures. For this reason, hypomelanosis of Ito has been included in the group of neurocutaneous syndromes, neurologic manifestations being one of the most frequent. Epileptic seizures have been reported in patient…

Inhibitors of melanogenesis: a patent review (2009 - 2014).

INTRODUCTION: Melanogenesis is the process of producing the melanin pigment, in which a series of chemical and enzymatic pathways are involved. Modulation at any level of this process would become an important approach in the treatment of hyper- or hypopigmentation-related diseases. Since hyperpigmentation covers important issue in cosmetics, there is a need of such review to understand and update this field to the public domain. AREAS COVERED: In this review, authors discuss most recent melanogenesis inhibitors published in the patents since 2009. The up-to-date overview of classical catecho…

Cutis tricolor.

Cutis tricolor is characterized by the coexistence of congenital hyperpigmented and hypopigmented patches in the context of normally pigmented skin. We report the case of a 13-year-old white adolescent girl with cutis tricolor. We analyze other reported cases of cutis tricolor as well as other cases characterized by coexistent hyperpigmented and hypopigmented patches. Cutis tricolor seems to be a rather unique cutaneous manifestation and occurs either in isolation or in association with internal manifestations. Labeling any other case characterized by hyperpigmented and hypopigmented patches a

Meyerson phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Meyerson phenomenon is an uncommon clinical condition that is characterized by an eczematous halo surrounding a preexisting melanocytic nevus and numerous other lesions. The etiology of this condition is unknown. We suggest that the mechanism is due to the interaction between CD4 T lymphocytes and increased expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1). OBJECTIVE: This article provides a concise overview of Meyerson phenomenon. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the case of a 37-year-old female with an inflamed nevus located on her thigh from no evident cause. Her co

Chemical leukoderma induced by herbal oils.

BACKGROUND: Chemical leukoderma (CL) may result from repeated exposure to specific chemical compounds such as industrial chemicals, cosmetics, and personal articles. The incidence of CL is reportedly increasing rapidly in developing countries. OBJECTIVE: Two cases of chemical leukoderma arising out of use of herbal oils on the scalp and breasts are described. CONCLUSION: We emphasize the importance of a detailed history regarding possible exposure to chemical agents in patients with depigmented lesions, mainly in adults.
