BACKGROUND: Adherence to highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) is critical to long-term treatment success in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, the relationship between psychological variables and medication adherence is still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate how anger dimensions in subjects with HIV affect adherence to antiretroviral drugs.
METHODS: One hundred and thirty outpatients with HIV who were nondepressed and receiving HAART were administered the State-Trait Anger Inventory and a compliance self-report questionnair

OBJECTIVES: To provide DNA-based genetic counseling to family members in the direct genetic lineage of a family fulfilling phenotypical criteria for the autosomal, dominantly inherited, attenuated familial adenomatous polyp (AFAP) syndrome. This enabled highly targeted cancer risk estimation based on cancer phenotype in concert with the presence or absence of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) germline mutation. Management recommendations could then be fully responsive to this syndrome's natural history.
METHODS: Detailed family history with pathology verification of colonic polyps and canc

Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is characterized by a strong and persistent cross-gender identification that affects different aspects of behavior. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a critical role in neurodevelopment and neuroplasticity. Altered BDNF-signaling is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of psychiatric disordersand is related to traumatic life events. To examine serum BDNF levels, we compared one group of DSM-IV GID patients (n = 45) and one healthy control group (n = 66). Serum BDNF levels were significantly decreased in GID patients (p = 0.013). This data suppor

Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a condition in which people experience a broad array of symptoms in reaction to exposure to trace amounts of common chemicals. Symptoms are most often triggered by odors, typically affect many systems, and can range from a runny nose to difficulty breathing and heart palpitations. The cause of this condition is unclear and there is no universal consensus on how to diagnose or treat it. MCS afflicts millions of Americans, although its prevalence is difficult to establish reliably. Theories of causation include both the physical and the psychogenic. This ar

Patients with leukemia often suffer from the combined effects of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and subthreshold depression, which mutually exacerbate each other in a vicious cycle. In this editorial, we comment on the article by Liu et al, published in the World Journal of Psychiatry. We further elucidate the profound impact of subthreshold depressive symptoms on the experience of CRF and complications in patients with leukemia. This editorial highlights the importance of early identification and treatment of subclinical depression, and advocates for a multidisciplinary and integrated treatment

Somatization, the physical expression of psychological distress, is a prevalent and important problem. It is seen in a wide variety of clinical settings and represents a significant evaluation and management dilemma. The burden to the patient--coupled with the consequential economic and social costs--can be substantial. As a result, the identification and appropriate management of these patients and their often-challenging symptoms is imperative. The following review attempts to summarize the significant body of work committed to the concept of somatization in the medical, surgical, and psychi

Employee AI awareness (AIA) has emerged as a critical yet conceptually diffuse construct capturing how employees cognitively and affectively interpret the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) for their work. Addressing calls for psychologically grounded research on AI in organizational contexts, this study systematically reviews and synthesizes fragmented evidence to strengthen the conceptual foundations of employee AIA and develop a coherent, process-oriented understanding of the construct. A systematic literature review was conducted using a five-step identification and screening pro

BACKGROUND: The complex dynamics entwining psychological issues with ethical and surgical aspects are often noticed in patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) accompanied by an overwhelming desire for plastic surgery. This review explores the intricacies of diagnosing and treating BDD within the dilemmas of plastic surgical interventions where patients usually consider surgery as the answer to their psychological problems.
METHODS: Relevant articles published up to May 2025, available on PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, were screened and selected. Preference was given to artic

Spiritual bypassing - using spirituality to avoid unresolved psychological difficulty - has been studied almost entirely in Western samples. This conceptual paper asks whether the construct travels to Indian contexts and proposes a culturally situated alternative. The method is immanent critique: existing formulations are examined against their own stated aims to identify the assumptions they must make; those assumptions are tested against evidence from Indian cultural psychology, gender socialization research, and the psychology of religion. Literature is identified through targeted searches

Abuse of the elderly is a major issue debated worldwide. The most commonly identified form of abuse is the physical abuse. It is also the most frequently studied in the medical literature. However, at least six types of elder abuse are identified, and physical abuse is found in a small proportion of the cases. The consequences of abuse are frequent and, by prolonging hospitalizations, they will be associated with high costs of medical services, and patient's lack of self-confidence which, in time, may lead to social isolation, somatization, anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts. In this co
