Trauma, Mental Health Distress, and Infectious Disease Prevention Among Women Recently Released From Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: U.S. women recently released from incarceration experience significantly higher rates of trauma and exacerbation of mental health conditions, and the period following release has been identified as a window of heightened risk for mental health distress and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), sexually transmitted infections (STI) and hepatitis C (HCV) transmissions. Despite these vulnerabilities, and an urgent need for supports, optimal engagement strategies remain unclear. WORTH Transitions is a program made up of two evidence-based interventions focused on improving the health of …

A Community-Based Youth Diversion Program as an Alternative to Incarceration, Illinois, 2017-2019.

The US justice system unfairly targets youths of color; systemic reform plus interventions to keep youths out of the justice system are needed. The Juvenile Justice Collaborative provided care coordination and wraparound services to adolescents in a diversion program from 2017 to 2019 in Cook County, Illinois. Youths showed increased strengths and decreased needs by program's end. Youths who successfully completed the program showed reduced recidivism compared with nonprogram youths. Community-based alternatives to incarceration may decrease life disruption, promote positive health and social …

Former Incarceration, Time Served, and Perceived Oral Health among African American Women and Men.

A large body of research has documented the far-reaching health consequences of mass incarceration in the United States. Yet, less scholarship has examined the relationship between former incarceration and oral health, a key reflection of health and disease occurring within the rest of the body. Using data extracted from the National Survey of American Life (n = 3343), this study examines associations among former incarceration status, duration of detention, and self-reported oral health among African American women and men. Results from gender-stratified ordered logistic models reveal that fo…

Cocaine Use and Incarceration: A Rare Cause of Bowel Ischemia, Perforation, and Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage.

Cocaine use is rising in persons ≥50 years old and in black and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Cocaine-induced bowel ischemia and gastrointestinal injury are deadly findings that have been previously described in the literature. In this report, we present a case of small bowel ischemia, perforation, and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage co-occurring in a 62-year-old incarcerated male with a 15-year history of cocaine use. The patient presented from jail, peritonitic in septic shock, and was promptly taken for emergent surgical exploration. He was found to have massive fecal perit

Health care and social justice implications of incarceration for pregnant people who use drugs.

The experiences of and care for pregnant, incarcerated people with substance use disorders represent a convergence of numerous clinical, historical, racialized, legal, and gendered factors. Understanding how these forces shape how they became enmeshed in the criminal legal system as well as the context of the care they do or do not receive while in custody is essential for promoting equitable maternal health care. In this review, we describe the prevalence of SUD among pregnant people behind bars, the health care landscape of incarceration, access to treatment for opioid use disorder for incar…

[A Case of Internal Hernia Incarceration of a Mesenteric Defect following Laparoscopic Ileocecal Resection].

A 75-year-old man underwent laparoscopic ileocecal and partial small bowel resections for the management of appendiceal cancer. The pathological diagnosis was cecal cancer(T4b[ileum, abdominal wall],N0[0/13], M0, pStage Ⅱc). After 4 months of surgery, he suddenly experienced abdominal pain and vomiting and was presented to our emergency room. He was diagnosed with bowel obstruction following which, conservative treatment was initiated through a nasogastric ileus tube implantation; however, he did not show any improvement. Subsequently, he underwent experimental laparotomy on the 18th day of th

[Two cases of chronic upside down stomach with "reverse incarceration" in the abdominal cavity].

Upside down stomach (UDS) is a rare type of hiatal hernia. It is categorized by herniation of either the entire stomach or most of the gastr … now had a normal UDS. These results indicate that chronic UDS caused acute symptoms due to "reverse incarceration" in the abdominal cavity through the diaphragmatic hiatus following eating. Chronic UDS is often either asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic. However, these cases suggest that there is a mechanism whereby chronic UDS may cause acute UDS-like symp …

Frequency and Duration of Incarceration and Mortality Among US Veterans With and Without HIV.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to incarceration is associated with increased risk of mortality, and HIV is cited as a leading cause of death. Yet, few studies have examined the association between incarceration and mortality among people with HIV (PWH), specifically whether and how increasing exposure to incarceration increases risk of mortality. We compared mortality by different incarceration exposures and HIV status. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of participants in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study from January 2011 to August 2017 (N = 5367). The primary exposure was incarceration b…

Incarceration and pandemic-related restrictions during COVID-19: An empathic understanding of two worlds.

This paper explores parallels between experiences of confinement due to pandemic-related restrictions and confinement as a result of legal incarceration. We compare experiences of social isolation, lack of choice, and reduced access to resources while also acknowledging the existence of significant differences between the two situations. We describe the ways in which experiences of confinement as part of COVID-19 regulations can provide the general public with insight into difficulties associated with incarceration and the negative effect it can have on psychological health. (PsycInfo Database…

Family Member Incarceration, Psychological Stress, and Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease in Mexican Women (2012-2016).

Objectives. To examine the association between family member incarceration, psychological stress, and subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD).Methods. Between 2012 and 2016, 1849 CVD-free women from the Mexican Teachers' Cohort responded to questions on family incarceration from the Life Stressor Checklist. Perceived stress and hair cortisol levels were measured in a subset of participants. Carotid intima-media thickness was measured, and carotid atherosclerosis was determined in all participants. We used multivariable quantile, linear, and logistic regression models to evaluate the associati…

Linking parental incarceration and family dynamics associated with intergenerational transmission: A life-course perspective.

Children experiencing parental incarceration face numerous additional disadvantages, but researchers have often relied on these other co-occurring factors primarily as controls. In this article, we focus on the intimate links between crime and incarceration, as well as on the broader family context within which parental incarceration often unfolds. Thus, parents' drug use and criminal behavior that precedes and may follow incarceration periods may be ongoing stressors that directly affect child well-being. We also use our analyses to foreground mechanisms associated with social learning theori…

Examining the relationship between U.S. incarceration rates and population health at the county level.

A collateral consequence of mass incarceration in the United States is its negative effects on population health. Using data from 2015, this study examines the relationship between incarceration rates and population health for a national sample of U.S. counties. To obtain unbiased estimates of the effect of incarceration on health, we use multivariate models which account for the endogeneity of incarceration rates when determining their effect on population health by employing an instrumental variable approach where the robust instrumental (exogenous) variable per capita corrections expenditur…
