Lactobacillus rhamnosus Helps to Reduce the Duration of Bleeding in Breastfed Infants with Allergic Proctocolitis.

Background: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the most common food allergy in infants. The current standard of care (SOC) involves eliminating the allergen from both the infant's and mother's diet for 2-4 weeks. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (Ramnoflor) in reducing the duration of bleeding in these infants. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted at Bahrami Children's Hospital on breastfed infants who were diagnosed with CMPA and had a positive occult blood (OB) test. Patients were randomly assigned to either the control or

Associations between food insecurity with gestational diabetes mellitus and maternal outcomes mediated by dietary diversity: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity (FI) during pregnancy negatively impacts maternal health and raises the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), resulting in adverse outcomes for both mother and baby. AIM: To investigate the relationships between FI and pregnancy outcomes, particularly GDM and PIH, while also examining the mediating role of the dietary diversity score (DDS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken to examine this relationship, involving 600 pregnant women. Participants were women aged 18 years or older who provided complete da

Fluid flow and feeding performance in infant mammals: evaluating the impact of nipple design.

Infant mammals must suckle in order to acquire food. Many factors, including the design of a nipple, impact suckling, and thus can alter feeding performance. For example, feeding on a bottle nipple that has ducts embedded in silicone requires infants to generate suction to acquire milk, whereas a hollow bottle nipple allows infants to express milk via nipple compression. Furthermore, the design of a nipple impacts milk flow, and likely changes the relationships between suction generation, tongue kinematics and milk flow. In this experiment, we designed two ducted bottle nipples with similar pr

The changing face of food hypersensitivity in an Asian community.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy seems to be increasing in Asia as well as world-wide. Our aim was to characterize food protein sensitization patterns in a population of Asian children with possible food allergy. METHODS: Children presenting to our allergy clinic over 3 years with symptomatic allergic disease and at least one specific food allergen sensitization documented on skin prick testing were included in the analysis. RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty-seven patients fulfilled inclusion criteria. Ninety (40%) of the positive skin tests were positive to egg, 87 (39%) to shellfish, 62 (27.3%) to p

Feeding Practices Among Children Aged 6-36 Months Living in Urban Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire: The Victory Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies, often resulting from the consumption of diets with low nutritional value and diversity, remain a major public health concern for children in low-income countries. Understanding food consumption practices is crucial for providing an evidence-based foundation for designing and implementing effective intervention strategies to address micronutrient deficiencies in vulnerable geographies and populations. OBJECTIVES: To assess infant feeding practices and dietary intakes of healthy children aged 6-36 mo living in Abidjan, Cote Ivoire. METHODS: Food and beve

Bisphenol A: a body of evidence supporting exposure reduction.

The "tolerable daily intake" of bisphenol A, established by the European and US regulatory agencies, is based on a small number of reproductive toxicity studies in animals, mostly funded by industry, using protocols that adhere to regulatory guidelines. Many scientists consider these regulatory toxicology tests unsuitable for the evaluation of endocrine disrupters, because they cannot be used to demonstrate the effects of low doses of bisphenol A, observed in dozens of independent studies. Results obtained in studies of high doses of bisphenol A have been extrapolated to predict the effects of

The impact of postpartum depressive symptoms on self-reported infant health and analgesic consumption at the age of 12 months: A prospective cohort study.

The infants of mothers with elevated depressive symptoms (EDS) postpartum appear to be at increased risk of somatic health problems during their first 12 months of life in low- and lower-middle-income countries. However, in higher-income countries, knowledge of this association is scarce. We sought to examine whether maternal reports of infant health problems, adherence to vaccination schedules and analgesic supply to the infant during the first 12 months of life differ between mothers with and without postpartum EDS. Altogether, 969 women who were enrolled in the Kuopio Birth Cohort study (ww

Satiety Factors Oleoylethanolamide, Stearoylethanolamide, and Palmitoylethanolamide in Mother's Milk Are Strongly Associated with Infant Weight at Four Months of Age-Data from the Odense Child Cohort.

Regulation of appetite and food intake is partly regulated by N-acylethanolamine lipids oleoylethanolamide (OEA), stearoylethanolamide (SEA), and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), which induce satiety through endogenous formation in the small intestine upon feeding, but also when orally or systemic administered. OEA, SEA, and PEA are present in human milk, and we hypothesized that the content of OEA, SEA, and PEA in mother's milk differed for infants being heavy (high weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ)) or light (low WAZ) at time of milk sample collection. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mas

The role of infant nutrition in the global epidemic of non-communicable disease.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD) and atherosclerotic CVD in particular, are the most important health problems of the 21st century. Already in every world region except Africa, NCD account for greater mortality than communicable, maternal, perinatal and nutritional conditions combined. Although modifiable lifestyle factors in adults are the main determinants, substantial evidence now suggests that factors in early life also have a major role in the development of NCD; commonly referred to as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease hypothesis. Factors in utero, early postnatal life and t

Time course of vitamin E repletion in the premature infant.

Plasma and erythrocyte (RBC) tocopherol-isomer concentrations were determined serially in forty-two premature infants (25-35 weeks gestation) from birth to 8 weeks of age. For comparison purposes vitamin E status was also determined in six term infants over the first 8 d following birth and in a group of thirteen adult volunteers. Vitamin E intakes in term and preterm infants were calculated from recorded food intakes and blood transfusions. In term infants plasma vitamin E concentration rose from 1.9 mg/l (day 1) to 8.2 mg/l by day 8. In comparison preterm plasma vitamin E concentration, 0.3

Neonatal metabolic acidosis caused by food proteininduced enterocolitis syndrome: a case report.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE mediated allergic reaction with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea. FPIES diagnosis is based on clinical criteria and on a food challenge test. It is an unknown disease in neonatal units due to its nonspecific symptoms in newborn infants. An elevated methemoglobin level is a simple way to approach diagnosis. Here we describe a clinical case of a newborn admitted to the emergency department because of dehydration, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, severe metabolic acidosis, and a high methemoglobin level. Clinica

The olfactory system and its disorders.

The sense of smell is greatly underappreciated, despite the fact that it monitors the intake of airborne agents into the human respiratory system and determines to a large degree the flavor and palatability of foods and beverages. In addition to enhancing quality of life, this primary sensory system warns of spoiled foods, leaking natural gas, polluted air and smoke, and mediates basic elements of communication (e.g., mother-infant interactions). It is now apparent that smell dysfunction is among the first clinical signs of such neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer's disease and sporadic Pa

Breastfeeding: Common Questions and Answers.

All major health organizations recommend breastfeeding as the optimal source of infant nutrition, with exclusive breastfeeding recommended for the first six months of life. After six months, complementary foods may be introduced. Most organizations recommend breastfeeding for at least one year, and the World Health Organization recommends a minimum of two years. Maternal benefits of breastfeeding include decreased risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, postpartum depression, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Infants who are breastfed have a decreased risk of a

A Case Report of a Breastfed Infant's Excessive Weight Gains over 14 Months.

High infant weight gain is associated with subsequent overweight and obesity and so may contribute to related comorbidities such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. The growth acceleration hypothesis proposes that early and rapid growth in infancy can shape the metabolic profile to increase susceptibility to obesity. Although breastfeeding reduces the infant's risk of subsequent overweight and obesity, high infant weight gains are observed in this population. We report the case of an infant with excessive weight gains that persisted throughout 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding.

Clinical Presentation and Nutrition Management of Non-IgE-Mediated Food Allergy in Children.

Non-IgE-mediated food allergy encompasses a wide spectrum of allergic disorders ranging from mild to severe presentations, including food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, and food protein-induced enteropathy. Other gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation and gastroesophageal reflux disease have not previously been recognised as symptoms of non-IgE-mediated food allergy in food allergy guideline publications. Recently, two new consensus documents from the European Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology address a potential role of foo

Cumulative Household Food Insecurity Is Associated with Adverse Eating Behaviors Among Youth Exposed to Gestational Diabetes in Utero.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity has been associated with adverse eating patterns, which increase the risk for overweight and obesity. However, most studies measure food insecurity and eating behaviors cross-sectionally, not assessing whether experiencing food insecurity over time influences eating behaviors. Therefore, this study assessed the relationship between cumulative food insecurity and food approach and food avoidance eating behaviors and evaluated the effect of breastfeeding intensity and duration on this relationship. METHODS: The Study of Women, Infant Feeding and Type 2 Dia

Longitudinal assessment of antibiotic resistance gene profiles in gut microbiomes of infants at risk of eczema.

BACKGROUND: While there is increasing knowledge about the gut microbiome, the factors influencing and the significance of the gut resistome are still not well understood. Infant gut commensals risk transferring multidrug-resistant antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to pathogenic bacteria. The rapid spread of multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria is a worldwide public health concern. Better understanding of the naïve infant gut resistome may build the evidence base for antimicrobial stewardship in both humans and in the food industry. Given the high carriage rate of extended spectrum beta-lac
