Increasing Access to FASD-Informed Care: Bringing an Adapted Intervention to Mental Health Providers.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 1 in 4 children seeking mental health care have an undiagnosed fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Few mental health providers receive training or feel competent to serve this population. Evidence-based interventions (EBIs) for FASD have low uptake across mental health settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically adapt an EBI to increase access to care for youth with FASD in mental healthcare settings, resulting in the innovative Families Moving Forward (FMF) Connect Pro program. METHOD: A multidisciplinary planning group employed the theoretically-dri

Exploring self-compassion among men seeking weight loss: a thematic analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Self-compassion (SC) is associated with reduced eating disorder pathology, body dissatisfaction, and weight concerns, but most SC interventions and research samples focus on women. Because men often face unique challenges related to weight stigma and masculine norms, SC may be especially valuable in supporting emotion-regulation in health coaching programs. Little is known about how adult men engaged in weight loss interpret and experience SC, limiting the reach of interventions intended to support sustainable health behavior change. As such, the purpose of this study was to qual

Behavioral Effects of Opioid Full and Partial Agonists During Chronic Buprenorphine Treatment.

Buprenorphine, a partial agonist at the μ-opioid receptor, is commonly prescribed for the management of opioid addiction. Notwithstanding buprenorphine's clinical popularity, the relationship between its effectiveness in attenuating relapse-related behavior and its opioid efficacy is poorly understood. Furthermore, changes in the antinociceptive potency or effectiveness of opioid drugs that might occur during buprenorphine treatment have not been characterized. Here, we address these questions by assessing the ability of daily buprenorphine treatment to protect against the reinstatement of dru

Maternal Empowerment - An Underutilized Strategy to Prevent Kernicterus?

BACKGROUND: Kernicterus is a common cause of death and morbidity in many Low- Middle-income Countries (LMICs) and still occurs in affluent nations. In either case, the immediate cause is delayed treatment of severe hyperbilirubinemia. In the West, a provider driven "systems approach" has been widely adopted to identify babies at risk prior to discharge from birthing centers with follow up monitoring based on the serum bilirubin level at time of discharge. The situation is more complicated in regions of the world where kernicterus is endemic, especially in LMICs where Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydr

Factors in Patient Empowerment: A Survey of an Online Patient Research Network.

BACKGROUND: Providers and healthcare organizations have begun recognizing the importance of patient empowerment as a driver of patient-centered care. Unfortunately, most studies have investigated empowerment with single diseases. Identifying factors of empowerment across conditions and populations would enable a greater understanding of this construct. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to understand empowerment in relation to health information-seeking, interactions with providers and peers, and healthcare access in chronic disease patients. This study also sought to identify key empow

Estimating the number of hand, foot and mouth disease amongst children aged under-five in Beijing during 2012, based on a telephone survey of healthcare seeking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, increases in the number of outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) have shifted the disease into the public health spotlight in China. Children under the age of five years are particularly susceptible, with fatalities recorded. However, estimating the burden of HFMD has been difficult to conduct to date. METHODS: In 2012, a cross-sectional survey of healthcare-seeking behaviour for HFMD was undertaken, using computer assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) technology. Sample of telephone numbers was obtained from the Beijing Immunization Information S

Generative artificial intelligence-assisted medical self-care and associated factors among undergraduate students at Arsi University, South-Eastern Ethiopia.

The rapid expansion of social media and the availability of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies like ChatGPT and Gemini have significantly increased access to personalized health information. This has led to a rise in self-directed health behaviors such as self-diagnosis and self-medication. While GenAI can support informed self-care decisions, over-reliance on these technologies may result in incorrect self-medication and delayed consultations with medical professionals if not managed appropriately. However, there is a notable lack of systematic empirical data regarding Ge

Caregivers' and nurses' perceptions of the Smart Discharges Program for children with sepsis in Uganda: A qualitative study.

Sepsis arises when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. Among children hospitalized with suspected sepsis in low-income country settings, mortality rates following discharge are high, similar to mortality rates in hospital. The Smart Discharges Program uses a mobile health (mHealth) platform to identify children at high risk of post-discharge mortality to receive enhanced post-discharge care. This study sought to explore the perceptions and experiences of the caregivers and nurses of children enrolled into the Smart Discharges Program and the program's effect

Doubting what you already know: Uncertainty regarding state transitions is associated with obsessive compulsive symptoms.

Obsessive compulsive (OC) symptoms involve excessive information gathering (e.g., checking, reassurance-seeking), and uncertainty about possible, often catastrophic, future events. Here we propose that these phenomena are the result of excessive uncertainty regarding state transitions (transition uncertainty): a computational impairment in Bayesian inference leading to a reduced ability to use the past to predict the present and future, and to oversensitivity to feedback (i.e. prediction errors). Using a computational model of Bayesian learning under uncertainty in a reversal learning task, we

"Each moon we come to weigh the pregnancy:" Exploring the experience of group antenatal care processes in Benin and their contributions to self-efficacy.

Group antenatal care (G-ANC) is a model that brings pregnant women with similar estimated delivery dates together for clinical assessment and participatory learning in a supportive social context. A qualitative study was nested in a trial assessing the community impact of G-ANC on ANC retention and uptake of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) in Atlantique Department, Benin. This nested qualitative study assessed women's experience of G-ANC, and ways participation could foster self-efficacy to perform a variety of prevention and care-seeking behaviors. Ten semi-st

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis patients' healthcare-seeking behaviors and doctors' diagnosis delays.

INTRODUCTION: Since the onset of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, global healthcare systems have faced unprecedented challenges. To control the spread of COVID-19, China implemented multiple nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). These measures have significantly altered people's healthcare-seeking behaviors. This study aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare-seeking behaviors and doctor s' diagnostic delays among pulmonary tuberculosis patients, providing systematic information for future responses to pandemics of other "X diseases". METHODS:

A Call for Youth Voice to Support Engagement in Care for 18- to 29-Year Olds Living with HIV in the US South.

Youth with HIV (YWH) face challenges in achieving viral suppression, particularly in the Southern United States, and welcome novel interventions responsive to community needs. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) describes factors that influence behavior change, and the Positive Youth Development (PYD) supports youth-focused program design. We applied TPB and PYD to explore factors supporting care engagement and challenges for YWH in South Texas. We conducted 14 semi-structured interviews with YWH and 7 focus groups with 26 stakeholders informed by TPB, PYD, and themes from a youth advisory bo

Classification of patterns of tobacco and cannabis co-use based on temporal proximity: A qualitative study among young adults.

PURPOSE: Co-use of tobacco and cannabis is a common and complex behavior. The lack of harmonized measures of co-use yields confusion and inconsistencies in synthesizing evidence about the health effects of co-use. We aimed to classify co-use patterns based on temporal proximity and describe preferred products and motives for each pattern in order to improve co-use surveillance. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews in a sample of 34 young adults (Mage = 22.8 years, 32.4 % female) during 2017-2019 in California, USA. We employed a qualitative thematic analysis to identify timing, re

A process for developing community consensus regarding the diagnosis and management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

There remain large discrepancies between pediatricians' practice patterns and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines for the assessment and treatment of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Several studies raise additional concerns about access to ADHD treatment for girls, blacks, and poorer individuals. Barriers may occur at multiple levels, including identification and referral by school personnel, parents' help-seeking behavior, diagnosis by the medical provider, treatment decisions, and acceptance of treatment. Such findings confirm the importance of
